LDB Special Series #151

Out of my 7,000+ shows and radio broadcasts, I have many concerts that were special for some reasons: the setlist, the musicians, the venue or unexpected events. These are the ones I'd like to propose you. Most of these come from my cassettes collection, so they will be released at a slower pace than my Master Series! But you won't be disappointed!
I will try to gather the most unusual things I have in my collection and, as always, your feedback and comments will be my reward for all the work involved in this project.

DO NOT share this music on mp3, just convert it for your own use. Sharing mp3's is the right way to make me stop sharing music here.

I had this cd stored somwhere in my closets and I actually never listened to it. I received this a few years ago from a new yorker friend. The title on the cd looked intriguing: " Ayers holland 1971 with Wyatt & Oldfield". A few listens and a few googles later I could track the exact date & venue as well as the tracklist. Sound quality is perfect, probably a pristine 9/10. And Ayers is in great shape as well as the whole band. Wyatt joined the band for a mere 6 months period only. Enjoy this lost gem!

(musique en off)

ils évoquent bien entendu le départ surprise du chanteur du groupe, Rob Taylor, juste avant la tournée en Europe ;
ils ne croient pas en la réformation du groupe;
ils dénoncent la violence aux USA et considèrent que la musique est une façon de vivre ;

Kevin Ayers - Old Grey Whistle Test 1973-06-12 (DVD)

I was going through all these posts of Kevin Ayers nadir_53 has been so kindly putting up, and I noticed I have footage of a part of the unreleased TV shows, the Old Grey Whistle Test from June 12th, 1973. I got it in the same trade with the French TV shows I uploaded recently. The version I have does not seem to come from the broadcast, as it has a time code (a bit annoying, as it shows a lot of the time on Kevin's forehead - please check the caps), and the picture and sound quality's quite good. I hope you enjoy it.

Remastered version

What I did : remove an awful lot of hiss / equalization / transition between tracks to make it a seamless show / design the cover art

This is by far the best version available (if you except the extracts that were officially released and that I have removed here.

"Baby's on fire" was played twice during this show : in the beginning and as the last encore. The encore has been officially released, but without its extra percussive introduction. Here I have kept the introduction and made it followed by the song as it was played in the beginning of the show.

Triple bill Caravan-Kevin Ayers-Soft Machine

SOURCE: VG+ mono audience master tape. Sound quality similar to the Caravan gig.

DIRECT TRANSFER NOTES (April 2020): I shared this tape here in 2007 or so but I used a Minidisc in the lineage, which some people consider as lossy.
To have the best possible quality, I make this new direct transfer, keep both channels (no true mono), I add tags for your comfort.
IMHO it is worth grabbing this one even if you already have the initial version.

The former artwork is not appropriate anymore because it mentions the Minidisc, and the the photo of the venue is not the right one.
You are welcome if you want to make a new artwork...

If you like Andy Summers, he plays a lot of guitar. Kevin flopped at this concert; the audience did not enjoy/understand (?) his songs; therefore he gets booed.

LINEAGE: cheap Philips N2208 mono cassette recorder with built-in mic and automatic recording level

Kevin Ayers. Live in La Romareda (03/10/81)

May I
Shouting in a bucket blues
Didn´t feel lonely till I thought of you
Take it easy
Everybody´s sometime and some peoples all the time blues
Supersalesman
Cuidado con el perro
Africa (Budget tours)
Stop this train (again doing it)
Animals
Stranger in blues suede shoes

A disfrutarlo y si alguien sabe estereofonizarlo..."

Kevin Ayers.

Shouting in a bucket blues
Didn´t feel lonely till I thought of you

Supersalesman
Cuidado con el perro
Africa (Budget tours)

A Hans de Vente tape

Originally broadcast on Durch FM radio Hilversum 3, Vara, Lijn 3

This is at least the 4th version of this show which has been put up here. This time, I think, it's even closer to the original broadcast than all versions before.

It's previously been put up by brinkhoffs which included some radio tuning on Track 01 and a tape flip in Track 08.

maclen uploaded a version from 'a very old cassette tape' which borrowed tracks 06 and 09 from Brinkhoffs. As he put it, it lacked some of the clarity of the Brinkhoffs version. I can't find that on the tracker.

paulbelbin used the 'Sweet Dreamer' bootleg CD as the main sorce and added tracks 06 and 09 from brinkhoffs (those aren't on Sweet Dreamer).

This version comes from a recent transfer of Hans' 30 year old cassette which he never played till this day.
He gave the following lineage:
Sony ST 555 tuner > Sony cassette deck > TDK metal cassette > Nakamichi Dragon > Audacity > WAV 44/16

The tape flip in Super Salesman (at 6:31) was fixed by splicing in 17 seconds from brinkhoffs. All editing was made with Adobe Audition CS6. Sector boundaries were aligned using Trader's Little Helper. Finally, files were converted to FLAC (level 8).

Tracks:
01 May I? (6:16)
02 Shouting In A Bucket Blues (4:16)
03 Animals (4:59)
04 Too Old To Die Young (5:46)
05 Everybody's Sometime And Some People's All The Time Blues (3:38)
06 Super Salesman (7:58)
07 Howling Man (4:11)
08 It Begins With A Blessing / Once I Awakened / But It Ends With A Curse (9:36)
09 Africa (3:20)

Notes:
04 Introduced as 'Too Old To Die Young', aka 'Champagne & Valium'
08 Aka 'Why Are We Sleeping', but this is the arrangement and title as it appears on 'The Confessions Of Dr. Dream'
09 Introduced as 'Africa', aka 'Budget Tours Part 1', fades out just before the radio outro

::: SOLID VG++ AUD quality. Check samples for "Doesn't do it for me" or "Dose me deeply" deliberations.
::: Warts: Not many! Some bits of clapping during music at starts and/or ends of songs.
::: COMPARISON CLAUSE: "Mk1" CoolSonics 038 1st uploaded 2011-11-04, no longer on tracker. This is the Mk2 remaster.
::: Due to mike cable defect, original upload was out of phase (2chan mono/1chan inverted). Fixed&now sounds MUCH better.
::: One of Ayers' finest later albums, "Still Life With Guitar", was released in '92 (2 songs played here).
::: "Shooting at the Moon" 2019 solo lyrics book curated&edited by Kevin's daughter thru site below.
::: Since I up'd this in 2011, we've unfortunately lost Kevin Ayers to the great beyond.
::: Another big loss since 2011: Brass City Records owner, Walt Quadrato (the prog spirit of Waterbury!), a longtime friend, R.I.P.
::: Photo of Walt in store: https://i0.wp.com/archives.rep-am.com/wp-content/uploads/sites/2/2016/10/20150205-233726-pic-394351063.jpg?w=683&ssl=1
::: Carville's review of Waterbury & Boston Ayers gigs at www.users.globalnet.co.uk/~marwak/archive/carvil.htm
::: NOTE: This remastered recording sounds WAY better than weird sound Carville mentions & I think the playing is excellent.
::: Thankfully, Carville's still tilling the soil, rather than lying under it, so this one goes out for his delectation.

Recording Information ::: Sony TC-D3 portable DAT recorder with single Sennheiser K3/ME80 Shotgun condenser microphone (probably with shotgun cap) -> master audience DAT (mono).
Transfer/Playback 2009-xx-xx ::: master audience DAT -> Tascam DA-P1 (48/16) -> Tascam CD-RW900SL pro CD recorder -> tracked CD-R (44.1) -> computer in 2011, EAC secure -> wavs -> -> Trader's Little Helper -> flacs.
Remastering 2020-05-xx ::: master flacs -> Audacity [phase corrected, fades, some manual one-at-a-time clap repairs during music, PopMute applied to lower near-mike clapping between songs, many volume adjustments, NO equalisation or noise reduction] -> CD Wave (track splits) -> flacs (Trader's Little Helper) -> yr ears. Freed 2020-06-xx.
Line-up ::: Kevin Ayers (R.I.P. 2013-02-19) - electric guitar, vocals.
Nothing here ever commercially released to my knowledge. If I'm wrong, please advise & I'll take the offending trax offline.
DimeTravel 638 ::: Thanks to the original taper, meself... ::: Corrections welcome ::: This one goes out in memory of Commander Quadrato, a light in the progressive skies! We were delighted to see Mr Ayers on our side of the pond. Guitar & voice in great form. Enjoyable recording in a very small space (back room of a record store). Not easy from where I was located, a bit too close & vocal monitors a bit far to the side. Among other enhancement, the music has been greatly brought up in volume (manually) in relation to the audience/background noise for this version. That, along with the phase correction, make this a pretty swell listen. Listen, enjoy, show appreciation, share, give, spread peace. Yrs truly, Knees

::: EXC mono SBD quality. Check samples for dissin' & distain, or delightful delirium.
::: Warts (minor at this point!): Repaired dullspots & dropouts but surely missed a few. Very slight hum audible between some trax (most removed). #05 start split sec digidrop patched&almost inaudible. #09 2sec 1st chorus dropout patched from later in song.
::: ONe of Ayers' finest later albums, "Still Life With Guitar" released in '92 (3 songs played here).
::: Tony "Little Sun" Glover & Dave "Snaker" "Ray opened.Almost certainly taped but I ain't got it.
::: This goes out to Eremite - still gettin' it on in style, & to Farmer Carville (to keep his ears in shape).
::: "Shooting at the Moon" 2019 solo lyrics book curated&edited by Kevin's daughter thru site below.

Recording Information ::: mono soundboard -> unknown cassette recorder -> master cassette, Dolby off -> 1st generation Maxell XLII-90 cassette, Dolby B on.

Transfer 2010-11-28 ::: 1st generation Maxell XLII-90 cassette on Nakamichi BX-300 cassette deck, Dolby B on, azimuth adjusted for individual tape, heads cleaned & demagnetized -> Tascam CD-RWSL900 Professional CD Recorder -> CD-R -> EAC -> wavs.

Remastering 2020-05-xx ::: wavs -> Audacity [normalisation to remove DC offset, channel/phase alignment, fades, manual one-at-a-time glitch, bump, clap, pop, click, dropout & dullspot repairs, volume adjustments, pitch (speed) was spot on, NO equalisation *except hum notches & EQ'd a few split second mike overload spots, NO noise reduction] -> CD Wave (track splits) -> flacs (Trader's Little Helper) -> yr ears. Freed 2020-06-xx. (NOTE: bad cable hum first 2 songs notched out & 60Hz electric hum loud thruout recording notched down but still some slight hum audible between some songs. Mono SBD channels had almost identical frequency response so after lineup & repairwork, combined channels to remove extremely slight Rchan dullspots).

Line-up ::: Kevin Ayers (R.I.P. 2013-02-19) - electric guitar, vocals.

Nothing here ever commercially released to my knowledge. If I'm wrong, please advise & I'll take the offending trax offline.

DimeTravel 637 ::: Thanks to M.E. for promotin', hostin', tapin', ´sharin' the goods, buyin' hard cider for breakfast, & all the rest. Found his remembrance online referring to this show ('93, not '94), "peace in the end to roky erickson & to tony ‘little sun’ glover. what an honor for me that tony & dave ‘snaker’ ray were the very first musicians i presented in performance, opening for kevin ayers at the minneapolis college of art & design, 1994. 'money up front, man, just like chuck berry or we don’t play' (dave ray)." ::: Corrections welcome ::: Aside from the annoyance of the bad cable which crops up between songs in the first part of the show (greatly reduced here & no longer really a problem), this is a pretty fine (well-lubricated) performance overall. Always enjoyed this tape, it spent some time in my car for a while back in the day where I was still driving 25k miles a year for work. Glad to have revived it, & that it cleaned up pretty nicely - its more noticeable faults are essentially no more. Kevin keeps it pretty together at this gig - one hell of a musician & songwriter, how lucky we are to have shared some time on the planet with the guy. Who among us was really ever the same after their first 50 listens to "Songs From The Bottom Of A Well"? I keep taking that trip, damaged, but still grinnin'. Hope you are, too. Listen, enjoy, show appreciation, share, give, spread peace. Yrs truly, Knees

Getting a bit dreamy, in Poole, Dorset 2002

About a month ago we received a comment from Terry Collins from Jakarta, Indonesia. He said “I have a recording of Kevin playing at Mr. Kyps in Poole, Dorset on 25th October 2002 excited? Oh yes! This must be one of the most recent full recordings of a Kevin Ayers gig there is. There is a zip file you can download which contains 16 audio tracks, a Word document which explains how it came about and a front and back cover, if you choose to make your own CD. Here is a portion from the Word document:

I live in Jakarta but noted this gig was taking place in the town to which a former colleague, co-author and still (2014) very good friend had moved back to. At my suggestion, he went, knowing little about Kevin. With his pocket super-duper Sony Walkman I really dont know the technicalities my friend recorded the evening, and the quality is better than many other ‘bootlegs Ive heard.
