A very good audience recording from the No More Heroes tour ... a cracking gig, a great setlist, and a soundcheck that includes English Towns, the only known live recording by the original line up of this song... All the gig songs are complete and it's a ferocious performance... there's a lot of gobbing from the crowd and one the tracks is halted and the crowd get a talking to. When they start up again, it's relentless.
This is ripped straight from cassette, generation unknown, certainly a few off the master. But the sound is very good for the time, recorded in stereo.

This is an Excellent Quality audience recording from the Stranglers’ No More Heroes tour. The raw power of this band is captured perfectly in this 58 minute gig.
This is a 1st generation copy, I believe, from the master. Dynamics are excellent, and listening to it again, this could have been taped last week! Hear sample below.
Not to be missed. Enjoy!

Found this tape last week in a box with some master tapes,FM recordings and some traded tapes. This Stranglers show is very great in performing & quality.
Hugh is speaking a lot of german language between the songs and he knows some very special and dirty words. After track 7 & 8 were cuts in applause,no music was lost.
Please help with the setlist ,don`t know the 3 songs marked with a "?" For the great quality listen to the 2 MP 3 samples before downloading, I`m sure you will like it.

(*) Jean Jacques speaks of singer Anne Sylvestre who was booed and walked off stage.

---------- -----***
THE CONTEXT
I was at this show and I can give a few details about it.

This "Fete du PSU" was an outdoor festival and the Stranglers were scheduled to play on the main stage, but rain started to fall, and the gig was moved to a big tent.

When the fans entered the tent, a sort of french female folk singer, Anne Sylvestre, was on stage ; as you may guess, her style of acoustic music was the exact opposite of the Stranglers music ! So the fans started to boo at this singer... without any result ! Then they threw 'water bombs' (plastic bags full of - it is my best guess - water...) at her ; one of these bombs fell on her guitar ; she said :

- Oh no, not on my guitar !

... and immediately a second bomb was thrown right onto her face ! This time she stopped singing. I have the haunting memory of her, walking off stage, her hair and clothes all wet... That was a cruel situation, but that's the way it happened in those days...

LOCATION DEAD CENTRE.

The real reason I purchased my Zoom was to record my all time favourite band My previous recordings were all "practise runs" for this, the main event, The Stranglers Ruby Anniversary Tour.

I hope they do them justice, I think so and I hope that those of you that download and listen also feel the same.

They had stated that on this tour they would attempt to play at least 1 track from each of their 17 albums and varied incarnations. This had caused much speculation and guess work on many of the forums and fan sites.

As 1 fan wrote this set list will never please everyone all the time but should please everyone some of the time. I cannot agree more. Yes there are many personal favourites I would have prefered to hear then some of those played, but over the 3 Scottish dates I have seen ( I taped 2), I have grown into the set and the band themselves by the end of night 3 seemed to have relaxed into it and already it seems a proper flowing set.

For those not aware Jet Black founder member and drummer has suffered ill health over the last few years and at various times drumming duties have been split or substitute drummers have been used.

I beleive the intention for this tour as far as possible is for the stand in drummer Jim MacCuley to drum the main set and Jet Black to take over for the encore and double drummers for the explosive finale.

On this, the first evening of the tour timings were a little out, JJ was removing his base at the end of Hanging Around, turned round and Jet was already in place, so they carried on only departing after Genetix. In fact Hanging Around wasnt even due to be played as it was missed from the official set list whis I will post in teh comments.

This is by far the longest Stranglers set/show - 29 tracks running just short of 2 hours.

So please enjoy sensibly and share freely go see them as who knows how much longer they may be around

LOCATION - LEFT OF CENTRE OF THE STANDING AREA

The Alhambra is a lovely old school theatre with i think 2 circle areas and boxes the stalls were mainly standing on sloping floor for great views and some old fashioned red velvet seats.

The band made some running order changes for the 2nd night in Glasgow and these were kept for this show as well. Those changes, as well as the band being 3 nights in lent to a more flowing performance.

There was a slight stage invasion during lowlands, pictorial evidence in the comments.
I wont spoil it for you but those of you that know your Stranglers history will think correctly that it was 2 songs early.

I probably could have raised the levels on this a little bit but maybe just turn it up

Jet Black seemed to be a little under the weather during his appearance at the end and subsequent performances have seen less of him and I believe for 1 or 2 he has been completely absent.

I attended last nights Hammersmith Apollo show and he was back although for fewer songs and again a different running order and with 3 "new song" replacing the missing Jet ones.
I did not tape as I took my 14 year old to his first Stranglers show.

I hope some of these shows turn up I have been led to beleive that many of them have been taped, we shall have to wait n see.

I do intend or attending and hopefully taping 1 or 2 more from the UK leg and I may venture onto the european leg in April so please keep checking back

If the band are playing anywhere near you please come along and see a great band playing great songs to a great set of fans. Buy the records/Cd's/T-shirts

LOCATION UP IN THE GODS RIGHT HAND SIDE

This was my 5 of 6 show and my 3 of 4 recording and was by far the loudest sound so far

the Jet Black part of the set had been chnged to the middle of the set and been reduced to just 3 tracks GB,ATS and GENETIX. The extra addition of DUCHESS, SBC and ADAAOTN spruced the set up enough for me.

The crowd were a little subdued but still very appreciative, more of a bouncing, nodding pit as opposed to a mosh pit.

Even from my location I believe this recording came out well and I even pushed the levels up slightly so should nt need any extra oomph.

Anyway please share freely and enjoy

A couple of points to note
- Golden Brown acquired some interesting new lyrics in the first verse courtesy of Baz
- The brief drop in sound level @ 2:58 during Norfolk Coast is not a recording glitch.
Somehow the PA was switched off and then back on again. At first I thought the 11 o'clock curfew had struck, but it was only about 10:45 - so I don't know what the gremlin was.

A jam packed show with good crowd atmosphere, however the sound seemed "echoey", I noticed this as I have seem them 6 times and recorded 4 of those on this tour and I have recorded here for Ruts DC and The Damned late last year.

I had turned the recording levels up for the previous show in Southend and possibly should have reduced them a smidge for this, there may well be 1 or 2 instances of clipping but still a decent capture for the equipment.

LOCATED DEAD CENTRE JUST IN FRONT OF SOUND DESK

There is some chatter in the quieter moments from some of the less knowing locals

Over a seven week period I saw The Stranglers 9 times, the first 3 nights of the UK tour in Scotland, 3 nights local to me in the South East and finally a little Euro jaunt for the last 3, well there was 1 more night added late on after everything else had been announced. I recorded 6 of those shows and this is the final upload. All my other recordings are still available and 3 other excellent shows have also been uploaded here
on DIME, please search out these recordings and download and enjoy.

Since 1979 this band have been a large part of my life, admittedly in varying degrees, but always there somewhere. This current UK/Euro tour celebrating their Ruby anniversary has given me some of the most enjoyable times, not just witnessing a great live unit but the camaraderie of my fellow fansinblack.

My purchase of the Zoom was made with the intent of documenting some of these shows.
I have been very pleased with how my recordings have come out and I hope they can be shared freely and sensibly and maybe get a few of you to check the band out next time they are playing near you, who know how much longer they will go on for.

NOTES:

Another Stranglers gig, another bus load of balding British beer-guts. Not that I'm casting hypocritical aspersions, you understand. My own waistline ensures that I blend in much better tonight than at most of the gigs I attend. The grey hair, too, is de rigeur attire; if, like me, you're lucky enough to be the owner of a scalp from which filaments still protrude.

The Stranglers are in-country for one of the last few shows on their Ruby Anniversary tour. It's a little hard to take in, but it is indeed almost 40 years ago that the band formed in the inauspicious setting of a flat above an off-licence in Guildford.

A lot of water has flowed under the bridge since then, the most conspicuous manifestation of which tonight is the absence of drummer, Jet Black, now in his 76th year. And to think people said he was old in 1977.

Jet's health has been failing in recent years and his live appearances with the band have sadly become increasingly sporadic. Overseas performances, in particular, have suffered and Jet now no longer travels outside the UK to play with the band.

Even on the British leg of this historically significant tour, Jet was forced to take a back seat. He was present at only some of the gigs and, even then, picked up his sticks only for the encores.

The young Jim Macauley sits in for Jet on the occasions that the latter is unable to play, and so it is he who thumps the tubs tonight.

The official line-up is thus three quarters complete, consisting of Baz Warne on guitar and vocals, Jean-Jacques Burnel on bass and vocals, and Dave Greenfield on keyboards and (mostly backing) vocals.

The Stranglers, on the infrequent occasions they are even discussed outside their core of fans, are usually criticised for allegedly having long since ceased to be musically relevant. They are, it is claimed, a nostalgia act, a band who no longer innovate and are happy to instead reel out an endless conveyor belt of greatest hits to a devout fan base with a stable population that no longer grows or shrinks, save for the occasional death in the family.

If, for the sake of argument, we accept that stance as truth for a moment, there is still one significant factor that differentiates this band from the countless others seeking to nourish an uncertain pension by traipsing the length and breadth of the nostalgia circuit: The Stranglers never split up and thus never had to reform to cash in on a generation's insatiable yearning to recapture the sensations of their lost youth.

Let's be frank, even without having trodden the now well worn path of disbandment and subsequent reformation, what The Stranglers offer IS primarily a huge nostalgia trip.

The band play to a dedicated following of middle-aged, black-clad folks whose musical universe has contracted to the point that the only records they still buy are those by bands they've been following for 20 years or more. Their gig attendance is limited to an even smaller subset. Why? "Because they just don't make music like they used to. Modern music is rubbish." Stranglers fans have unwittingly matured into their parents.

Each of the band's gigs is the musical equivalent of a Darby and Joan outing to Southend, or a reunion of veterans of some forgotten war; a place to squeeze oneself into every nook and cranny of that old leather jacket, or to bare some flabby skin, show off ill-advised band tattoos that have started to degrade and disperse with age, drink beer while complaining about how expensive the habit has become, and reminisce about that time on the X tour that Y pulled his pants down and stuck his Z out the window of the bus.

Even in the their heyday, when the band were riding high in the singles and albums charts, they were loathed and derided by the critics and their peers alike. Judged collectively too old to be punk (whatever that meant) and having quite deliberately adapted their musical style to the zeitgeist of 1976, they were seen by some as trespassers who had clambered aboard the punk bandwagon and were now riding it for all it was worth.

Whilst the band themselves (with the exception of J.J.) never claimed to be an intrinsic part of the punk phenomenon (I nearly used the word 'movement'), there is certainly some truth to the notion that the band co-opted the prevailing spirit of the times and utilised it as their vehicle to commercial success.

The band were certainly not the only one to capitalise on the changing society and musical environment in which they found themselves, adapting their music, appearance and behaviour accordingly, but they have certainly been the most vocally condemned for it, finding themselves now all but written out of the annals of punk history.

If you believe the revisionist version of events, The Clash and The Sex Pistols embodied the purest ethos of punk, yet for all of their supposedly untamed wildness, both bands were fabricated and managed by Svengali-like figures who planned and plotted their every move. History has been unkind to the much more organically formed Stranglers, who were never anyone's puppets.

As a new decade dawned, the band's sound softened in line with the prevailing musical trends. Written off as an anachronism by the critics, the band nevertheless managed to produce an impressive string of Top 20 hits from each of their subsequent albums, a feat maintained past the mid-eighties, at which point the band were so out of step with the vagaries of mainstream music that they became unfeasibly difficult for their label, Epic, to promote.

While the standard of songwriting remained high, The Stranglers were somewhere only slightly higher than Showaddywaddy in the coolness stakes. The hits dried up and frustration grew within the band at the general lack of recognition for their significant contribution to British music.

In particular, guitarist and lead vocalist, Hugh Cornwell, felt that the band were going nowhere.

Following the release and disappointing commercial performance of '10', Epic dropped the band from its roster and Hugh, dissatisfied with the rut the band were now stuck in and soured by frequent personal conflict with J.J.,
announced his departure from the band.

It was a move that surely spelt the end for The Stranglers; or so I thought.

However, rather than disband, as they had always intimated they would under such circumstances, the remaining members of the band carefully considered their options, no doubt weighing the modest yet steady income guaranteed by continued use of the Stranglers brand against the grim prospect of starting again from scratch, or the even grimmer prospect of having to get a 'real' job.

Perhaps I shouldn't have been as surprised as I was when the band announced their intention to carry on.

An unknown quantity called Paul Roberts was recruited to replace Hugh on vocals, while John Ellis (ex-Vibrators and Peter Gabriel Band), who had served on second guitar during the '10' tour and had a long association with the band, accepted the job of full-time guitarist.

While Roberts was embraced by many fans, I felt that he was abysmal. "It's better than the band splitting up" was one fan's pragmatic response to me outside the Town & Country Club in 1990, following Roberts' inaugural UK performance with the band at the venue.

For me, though, it wasn't better than splitting up; not even close. Splitting up would have at least placed the band's integrity beyond reproach. Their dignity would have remained intact. As things stood, such was the awfulness of Roberts' drawl, demeanour and performance that the decision to continue as a band in this form was an insult to their legacy and, for me at least, frankly unforgivable.

Roberts was a completely inappropriate replacement for Hugh. There was nothing about him to like. He was, in every conceivable way, a complete and utter failure as a Stranglers frontman. The decision to recruit him remains absolutely incomprehensible to me.

I stood on the pavement and cried following that show at the Town & Country Club, but for all the wrong reasons. It was like watching the rape of your mother and being powerless to stop it. Roberts had even taken over vocal duties on J.J.'s songs. There was simply no ignoring his pervasive influence.

This new incarnation of The Stranglers was effectively an insultingly dire tribute band, an ill-conceived karaoke act on acid. Above all, it was just an unconscionably bad idea that should have been met with a bullet to the head as soon as it was spawned.

Ellis was a technically gifted guitarist, but his unrestrained fretboard meandering irritated and demonstrated none of Hugh's flair for melody and songwriting. However, to his credit, Ellis was merely boring, while Roberts was truly offensive.

I immediately lost all respect for the remaining members of the band. While Hugh had dared to go it alone and venture toward an uncertain future, the rest of the band had chosen the stifling comfort of meeting their monthly mortgage repayments.

Crestfallen and disgusted, I penned a 5,000 word missive to 'Strangled', the band's official magazine, describing what I saw as the artistic and moral demise of the band. The editor wrote back and said that J.J. had read it and could sympathise with some of its points. He offered to print the piece, on condition that I edit it down to 500 words. I declined. It was an impossible task.

That was essentially it for me and the band still operating as The Stranglers.
It was a relationship gone sour and separation was the only constructive way forward.

The band now entered a protracted period of well-deserved obscurity, a state in which they would languish for more than a decade, longer than the entire career of many a band.

Numerous musically stillborn albums appeared throughout the nineties, each of which was poorly promoted and mercifully disappeared without trace, never mind a hit single in its wake.

Weak songs with even weaker production and an overly self-conscious attempt to return to the classic sound of the original line-up saw the band degenerate into an anachronistic pub rock band not fit to be the support band of the original Stranglers.

Whilst the fans continued to eulogise the energy that the new blood of Roberts and Ellis had brought to the band's live performance, it was abundantly clear to anyone with a pair of functional ears that their addition had contributed absolutely nothing to the songwriting.

The situation didn't start to improve until Ellis finally called it a day in 2000, creating a vacancy that would be filled by Baz Warne. However, Warne wouldn't come into his own until six years later, when Roberts, too, left the band. The line-up reverted to a four-piece, allowing Warne to take over main vocal duties, with J.J. naturally resuming vocal authority over his songs.

Finally, The Stranglers once again had a frontman who could sing and play guitar, and whose talent and swagger were a match for the band.

Ever mindful of the trauma of having witnessed my favourite band reduced to an embarrassing laughing stock a decade and a half earlier, it would be a few more years before it even occurred to me to go and see them live again. I just didn't have the interest any more. The band were part of my past, not my present.

As a kid, I had played the band's records every day. To say they formed part of the soundtrack to my youth would be a cliché, but true.

As a teenager, I had spent every penny of my limited funds on collecting their records and trading tapes of their live performances. At age 16, I had blown my very first wage on mail-order merchandise from S.I.S., the Stranglers Information Service. I had hundreds of gigs on C90 and had accumulated rare singles, acetates, test-pressings and transcription discs from all over the world.

My emotional investment in the band was thus huge, formed at an early age and carried into adulthood. Small wonder then, that its destruction by way of Paul Roberts had been so painful. He was merely the catalyst, however. The real blow to my respect for the band was delivered by the knowledge that J.J., Dave and Jet had quite deliberately chosen mediocrity over an uncertain future.

But that was all more than 20 years ago.

Today, the mark III incarnation of The Stranglers belts out the old songs more convincingly than even the original line-up in its twilight years, and has produced several albums of palatable new material, even managing to score the occasional hit along the way. Whilst these most recent works break no new ground and contain no classic songs, nor are they anything to be ashamed of.

And so we find ourselves here in Haarlem, anno 2014, at the lovely Patronaat, for the latest instalment in The Stranglers' odyssey.

Although tonight's line-up comprises only 50% of the one that recorded most of the songs aired tonight, they more than do them justice, blazing through each in an incendiary set.

It's just a good gig, no longer a life event, but that's fine by me. They've changed and I've changed. These people are my peers, not my idols.

I enjoy myself from start to finish, although I'd be lying if I didn't admit to biding my time during the post-Hugh numbers. They're in a different class, neither outstanding as songs nor charged with the emotion of having become milestones along the path of my youth.

All of the band's albums are represented by this anniversary gig, with the exception of three of the four released during the band's wilderness years, the Roberts/Ellis era. I certainly don't want to hear those songs and it seems that the band don't want to play them, either. That tells you enough.

They open strongly with 'Toiler On The Sea' and maintain the momentum with 'No More Heroes', Dave Greenfield's fingers struggling to find the keys to the solo at the breakneck pace required by this blistering rendition.

From there, we flit back and forth through the band's album catalogue in no particular order, with the emphasis on the band's best-known work.

The highlight for me is perhaps 'Peasant In The Big Shitty', one of the few songs on which Dave performs the lead vocal. At no other point in the evening do the band so convincingly lay claim to their name.

The evening ends on two encores, the final song of which is a white-hot run through 'Tank'.

At close to two hours, it's one of the longest Stranglers concerts I can recall attending, yet it still feels as if the band are only just getting started; such is the size of their back catalogue. They've barely scratched the surface. No 'Down In The Sewer', no 'Genetix', etc. Well, there's always a next time... or is there?

I have no idea how much longer The Stranglers can continue, but no-one, least of all the band, considered in 1977 the possibility that they'd still be performing together in 2014. Although 50% of that line-up weren't present tonight, the band left no doubt in my mind that, at least as far as live performance is concerned, enough of their essence remains to justify continued use of the name.

With Jet's days as a performing musician apparently numbered, it seems that the band as we have come to know them may also be approaching the end of an amazing career. Recent remarks from J.J. in an interview¹ would seem to confirm this.

The Stranglers: musically relevant? They certainly are to the people who came to see them tonight, many of whom, I get the impression, are in the audience EVERY night (I think I even recognise a couple of faces from the olden days). Remove the British contingent and the place would probably be half empty. Beer sales would certainly suffer.

Outside of the band's tightly knit fan community, however, whose unconditional love of the band through the years seems to have intensified as their numbers have diminished and media attention has waned, the band as they stand today are simply too insulated, and too content to remain so, to have any relevance to the wider world.

And so the attendance of a Stranglers gig is likely to retain the sensation of having accidentally wandered into a private members-only club. But so be it.
Band and fans alike seem happy with that state of affairs. The Stranglers have little left to prove.

National treasure status is probably not coming any time soon, either. The Stranglers seem destined to be painted out of music history, or at best, to become a footnote to it. The full extent of their influence will likely never be accurately acknowledged, the small detail of their having been the biggest sellers of the era in which they rose to prominence conveniently glossed over.

I have always enjoyed good results recording in the Patronaat and tonight is thankfully no exception. I can hardly believe how good the recording has turned out.

This is one of the finest quality Stranglers boots I've ever heard, and I've heard hundreds. I'd go so far as to call it a defining document of this era of the band's career. If you're a fan or just looking for a good recording of a gig from the 2014 tour, get ready for a pleasant surprise.

As always, samples are included to help you determine whether the recording is worth your while.

Well what can I say, Le Splendid indeed.

This was due to be the final date of their jaunt around Europe, an extra date was added for tonight, 21st in Belgium. Having seen the first 3 shows in Scotland, 3 shows around the London area and now 3 here in Europe, I have seen the set grow and adapt and almost take on a life force of its own. Over the 9 shows in total I have witnessed some 39 different tracks from throughout their 40 year career.

I have been a fan for 35 of those 40 years and yes maybe my memory of my early gigs from 1981 onwards are a little blurred but the power of these Ruby dates has been something special.

These recordings may not fully convey the atmosphere and chemistry between band and crowd but I hope they serve a happy reminder to those that were lucky enough to attend, make up for those that werent able to attend and hopefully convince many people to go and see them when they next visit a town near you soon.

Please search out the official website, check out the lively forum for news of upcoming dates.

You will be welcomed by the Familyinblack with open arms.
