WARNING !
FOR ENO COLLECTORS ONLY !
DO NOT EXPECT ANY MIRACLES HERE !
THIS IS STILL A RECORDING OF HORRIBLE QUALITY !
It is now simply less horrible as I will describe below.

A re-transfer from the same 1st generation cassette used
on the earlier upload to dimeadozen by booomboom

Many thanks goes to booomboom for unearthing this gem
and for the generous loaning of this extremely rare cassette to me.
It was dumped from the master cassette by the taper, some 30+ years ago.
The whereabouts of the master cassette/taper have been lost years ago,
so this is very likely to be the best we will ever get.

The original transfer suffered from some over boosting of the left channel level
adding some nasty additional digital distortion onto an already barely listenable recording.
This digital distortion is now gone.

My finding was that the left channel originally had a lower level
(thus higher signal to noise ratio).
I had suspected and hoped for the reverse to be true,
as that really would have been a major improvement, but no such luck.

I've compared this version with a dual right channel mono mix and a dual right channel
simulated stereo mix, but it is not quite as good as this left and right balanced
mixture direct from the cassette.
Judge for yourself if you wish.

I would have to say that the taper must have used some horrendously cheap
monophonic portable recorder and was situated near the back of a
venue that clearly did not have sound quality in mind when it was built.
It's so distant that it at times sounds like it was recorded from the
venue bathroom or from inside of a coat pocket.
Very little highs or lows...not much to work with at all.
Removed some of the hiss with Freefilter making sure
there was NOTHING there but tape hiss, which was a great improvement.

Despite all this however...it is strangely listenable after you get used to it.

----------
Performance notes/details/commentary etc. :
----------
An incredibly interesting complete concert recording of
the first of only five complete shows performed by Eno and the Winkies.
Brian Eno's only known live headlining solo performances as a "solo artist".

The 5 completed shows were as follows :
02/13/74 - Derby - Kings Hall
02/15/74 - Sheffield - City Hall
02/16/74 - Swansea - Brangwyn Hall
02/17/74 - Bristol - Colston Hall
02/18/74 - Dunstable - Queensway Hall

Anyone with a better scan of the rare advert in Melody Maker for this tour
please upload it for everyone !

It is unclear whether the sixth show was completed,
but it is at this point where Eno suffered the infamous tour ending collapsed lung.
He subsequently described this as a "blessing in disguise"
as he quickly discovered that he hated the conventional idea of performing and touring,
finding it exhausting, stressful and artistically stifling.
However this first show of the tour is anything but boring !

Track 5 is an unreleased gem, believed to be introduced by Eno as "Dignified by the Door",
although due to the poor sound quality of the recording, it is impossible to confirm.
He appears to sing "Mystified by the Door" in the song.

Track 6 is another unreleased Eno song, clearly introduced as "Love slips Away".
It has enough melodic similarities to call it a precursor to "Golden Hours"
released the following year on "Another Green World" albeit in a radically different form
with alternate lyrics.

The version of Fever is as the one popularized by Peggy Lee.

The seemingly strange choice of performing The Who's "I'm A Boy", is less odd
when taking into account that Pete Townshend had publically praised Eno's work.
Eno thanks him for (sometimes inadvertent) encouragement on the liner notes of Another Green World.

What Goes On was cited by Eno at the time to be his favourite song of all time.

The version of the performance encore "I Go Ape" is as popularized by The Monkees,
although also first a hit in the late 50's by composer Neil Sedaka.

The remaining tracks are interesting modified versions of material mostly from the Here Come the Warm Jets LP.
The only known live performance of many of these tracks.
It's really too bad the recording is so bad, as it might have been possible for someone
to correctly decipher the lyrics for Here Come the Warm Jets !
Brian appears to be temporarily unable to hear himself in the monitors during this track
as he is very uncharacteristically out of tune.
He is perfectly fine for the rest of the show.

Enjoy !

What I did : remove an awful lot of hiss / equalization / transition between tracks to make it a seamless show / design the cover art

This is by far the best version available (if you except the extracts that were officially released and that I have removed here.

"Baby's on fire" was played twice during this show : in the beginning and as the last encore. The encore has been officially released, but without its extra percussive introduction. Here I have kept the introduction and made it followed by the song as it was played in the beginning of the show.

audience tape 1st gen.>CDR(PhilpsCDR570)>wave(EAC)<flacf(8)

The quality of the music is good to very good,in the beginning there are a lot of mics tuning noise. The show was in a very small venue in front of only a few people and you hear mostly between the songs some noise from the audience, some political statements a lot of "BUH" & SCHEISSE(SHIT) shouters.Absolutely rare performance by these three artists.
Brian Eno plays fantastic electronics and synthezizer during " Das Lied Der Deutschen"John Cale has his hottest moments when he plays viola to Nico`s voice and pump organ.Very rare tracks and versions of great music.I had a lot of work with that tape,I removed some clicks and noise, fade in and fade out some tracks,a little bit equalizing and work with the channel,I hope you like it,it`s another rare document of music history and the Brian Eno work during some songs is worth the download.
"The End" is hypnotic with Brian Eno`s electronics,John Cale played a great piano and superb violin to Nico`s excellent voice and the sound of her pump organ. And for all Dolby surround fans a WARNING ,this is audience and not perfect,a lot of crowd noise and riot in the audience, a controverse show , most of the people in the audience hate the show and you have some loud shouters.

"BETWEEN US & IT" A performed installation of 4-D MUSIC
13th October, 2001. Volcán del Cuervo, Lanzarote.

Quality: A++

Brian Eno and J. Peter Schwalm performed and improvised this live concert inside a volcano (Volcán del Cuervo) at the 2001 Lanzarote Festival. The performance started at 19:30 on the 13th October.

The concert was broadcast on German radio although Peter Schwalm's Interview segments have been omitted.

01. Part 1 23:14
02. Part 2 08:46
03. Part 3 13:38

Total: 45:38

J. Peter Schwalm is a German DJ/ percussionist with whom Brian Eno collaborated on the 2001 album, Drawn From Life. They have also worked together on several other projects.

Brian Eno on playing with J. Peter Schwalm: "When we first played, it was an immediately comfortable and synthetic playing relationship. My biggest problem with improvising with people generally is that they retreat into a safe place too quickly for me, and he didn't do that. Sometimes we would get into rather a strange musical place, some emotion that hadn't really been felt before."

Brian Eno on J. Peter Schwalm's music: "Sometimes you hear something and think: "Now this is how the modern world feels to me". Peter's music is like that, capturing excitement and speed and ambiguity and even wistfulness and melancholy...A complex emotional palette which feels to me like real life."

this recording is split to fit on 2 cds (there is a small fadeout after track 4 and fadein at the start of track 5).
One audience photo from the very show (made by the taper) is also included

This wonderful recording was handed over to me by a friendly soul (who wants to be anonymous). I am `only` the uploader.
All thanks and thumbs up to *you*. I am happy and grateful for this recording (and all the other ones that are already uploaded or will be) since I couldn`t
go there. Whata Eno fest that was!!!!!

here some of my (anonymous taper) influences:

The first look onto the stage left me in no doubt we would be in for a special night of music: It looked like a huge music studio with a labyrinth of electronic equipment towers, computers, a drum kit, 2 pianos, an acoustic bass and guitars. On the right side, there was a huge group of lounge chairs and sofas grouped around a coffee table, a separate table with drinks and a waterjug, all was illuminated by various small Japanese lamps. Above hung a group of 3 diamond shaped screens of various sizes.
3 separate concerts had been on sale for this final event of the new Sydney Vivid Winter Festival on 14th of June, and it was possible to buy individual tickets for each show, but there was also a bulk offer for all 3 shows combined. The first concert started at 5 in the afternoon, the last one finished around 11.30 PM
Because of the complicated ticketing arrangements, the concert hall had to be vacated completely after each concert and the next audience re-admitted after an intermission, despite of the fact that a large part of the audience remained the same for all 3 shows, all of them allocated with different seats.
The musicians however stayed on the stage for the whole duration of the event, making use of the lounge facilities both during the concerts and the intermissions.
During the concerts, the 3 screens displayed an ingenious mix of abstract patterns, closeups of various parts of the instruments and participants faces.
The Necks are an Australian trio, well known world wide as a group performing long and riveting pieces of group improvisations of a kind of music that is impossible to classify and often making very unconventional use of their all acoustic instruments. To a large degree, their concept forms the backbone of these shows, but is also opened up wide by the contributions of the other participants and especially Brian Eno's directorial contributions. I did not realize this at the time, but some of the writings on display on the screens at various times must have been part of the written instructions of Brian Eno for the various pieces.
This first concert had the greatest dynamic range, starting out with allmost inaudible noises sounding like coming from water in motion and building to storms of all instruments combining to music of a vey high volume. This first show was like one huge piece with various sections. The cuts of the various tracks are therefore debatable and could have been left out or set at other points. Only the encore was a separate piece of music, announced under the name "Pink Moon".

Text from the official side http://luminous.sydneyoperahouse.com/PureScenius.aspx:

Experience Brian Eno performing live onstage for the first time ever in Australia!

Prepare for PURE SCENIUS when the LUMINOUS mastermind joins forces with Underworld's Karl Hyde, guitarist Leo Abrahams, synthesist Jon Hopkins and Australia's undisputed maestros of improvised minimalism - The Necks.

One day. Three improvised concerts. Two intervals. Each concert picks up where the other left off. Choose your own one, two or three part adventure in sound and vision. The first concert is based on a predetermined sequence of events and parts two and three will progress from there - each will have its similarities, each will have its differences. Like a laboratory conducting an undisclosed experiment, PURE SCENIUS will be a combustible, spontaneous, must-see mix of intellect, innovation and instrumentation.

And the experiment goes beyond audio; offstage Toby Vogel will be filming, mixing, re-processing and projecting layers of imagery on three massive screens - just like he does for Underworld's live shows.

Whether you're fascinated by process or performance, improvisation or collaboration, minimalism or chaos, you need to experience the grand finale to the LUMINOUS festival.

PURE SCENIUS PERFORMERS: ALL OF THEM ON STAGE AT THE ONE TIME

Karl Hyde is the poet and voice of Underworld... lager, lager, lager - remember the track Born Slippy at the end of Trainspotting? In the early 90s, along with band mates Rick Smith and Darren Emerson, Hyde assimilated techno into the art-rock tradition, lacing pulverising rhythms with frantic cut-up lyrics, eccentric humour, subtle textures and waves of improvisation.

Jon Hopkins is a musical shapeshifter: a composer, pianist and a self-taught studio wizard. He makes affecting, bold electronic music using walls of synths, lustrous melodies and amorphous bass rumbles. Co-producing Coldplay's Viva La Vida with Eno, his own ethereal compositions transcend genres, melding digital coldness with subtle, bucolic textures; veering from simple elegance to strange, unsettling sonic depths.

The Necks are one of the great cult bands of Australia. Pianist Chris Abrahams, drummer Tony Buck and bass player Lloyd Swanton conjure a chemistry together that defies description in orthodox terms. Working in every field from pop to avant-garde, the deceptive simplicity of their music throws forth new charms on each hearing.

Discovered by Eno tinkering on a guitar in a music shop, Britain's Leo Abrahams has since worked with the man himself as well as Paul Simon, Grace Jones and Nick Cave. An uncompromising and innovative musician, he pushes the guitar to new levels. Rejecting traditional techniques such as sampling, sequencing and computer effects, he instead relies on ambient sounds generated exclusively by the guitar to create pure music unaffected by commercial considerations.
