Don't be fooled by the title; this is an exact cop of the legendary Neil Young Meets Buffalo Springfield and The Squires CD that disappeared from stores some years back.
Instead of copping the title too, the people behind this release list the credits as Neil Young/Buffalo Springfield and state that it's a performance "Live in Wichita Falls, January 12, 1965."

At least they have the year right.

In fact, this collects a series of demos Neil made at Electra Studios while in New York in 1965, two Buffalo Springfield out-takes, two Neil demos from 1967 and the single Neil's group The Squires released in 1963. We'll take each "set" in order.

First, the '65 demos, which consist of seven songs:
"Sugar Mountain,"
"Nowadays Clancy Can't Even Sing,"
"Run Around Babe,"
"Don't Pity My Baby,"
"I Ain't Got the Blues,"
"The Rent Is Always Due," and
"When It Falls, It Falls Over You."
They're all just Neil and an acoustic guiitar; he sounds tentative & nervous as hell--but the songs themselves hold up, as evidenced by his returning to a few of them later in his career.

The Buffalo Springfield out-takes, "Down to the Wire" and "Do I Have to Come Right Out and Say It" are further proof that, sales be damned, the Springfield were one of the best bands of the '60s. "Down to the Wire," especially, is fun to listen to; the sound is a bit "boomy," however.
"Do I Have to Come Right Out and Say It" features Richie Furay on lead vocals.

The two '67 demos, "There Goes My Babe" and "One More Sign," are again just Neil-and-guitar tracks. When compared to the '65 offerings, they show substantial growth in both Neil's poise studios, no doubt, no longer frightened him). "One More Sign," especially, has all of the markings of a lost classic.

The Squires' tracks, "The Sultan" and "Aurora," are both instrumentals in the style of surf-guitar god Dick Dale, as well as the Shadows and Link Wray.

I wouldn't recommend this disc to neophytes as its worth is primarily of adding perspective to the early stages of Neil's artistic development. Veteran and/or hardcore fans, however, will find much here of value. (A)

Has a complete Down By The River (missing section probably spliced in). To my ears it has less hiss but without loss of music.

Bootleg has a bonus song of DBTR from Philadelpia 1970-02-28, but it is a very average sounding audience recording & TLH only gave it a 43% likelihood of being lossless, so I didn't include.

This recording, which surfaced a couple of years back, is one of the better 1973 Time Fades Away recordings. Besides sounding nice, you get the unreleased Come Along And Say You Will (some people have called it Lonely Weekend) along with a very rare Borrowed Tune, and the surprisingly infrequently played Harvest and Out On The Weekend.

My version was slow, so I sped it up to bring it into key. My version had lots of little clicks, so after tiring of removing them manually I used a click removal tool to remove the remainder. To my ear, I hear no negative effects from the process.

The Stray Gators: Ben Keith-pedal steel, Tim Drummond-bass, Kenny Buttrey-drums, Jack Nitzsche-piano.

Here is the master tape of the Chicago gig from early in Neil Young's "Harvest/Time Fades Away" American Tour of 1973. This three-month odyssey started on January 5, 1973 in Milwaukee. The setlist here is noticeably different than the recently posted Seattle March 17, 1973 show and features a number of songs that were dropped later in the tour. As such, this Chicago concert provides a nice contrast to Seattle. "LA" is performed here on acoustic guitar, rather than the electric version featured in the Seattle show. In addition, Kenny Buttrey also adds a distinctive difference on the drum parts. I rate this show VG+ in sound quality. Like Seattle, I think it's another of the better-sounding shows from this tour. None of these Chicago tracks appear on the "Time Fades Away" album. Song samples provided. Enjoy.

This concert I taped with an old AIWA walkman and an extra stereo-microphone (I can't remember what exact equipment I used those days), but what I do remember that it was my first concert I taped with that equipment. (..and that there was another guy standing diredctly beneath me also taping. A long time friend of mine since then!!)(..and he's still banned up here!!)

The sound quality is very good. This is a real and typical open air-recording with many people around my microphone talking and shouting (specially
on these loud numbers like "Birds"). I recorded it in the middle of the audience about 25 meters from the stage on the left side.

It was hot, the area was filled up with about 50.000 people. I partly taped the MSG and Jethro Tull in complete, both can be found up here.
I also taped King Crimson, they played a great gig, the best gig that afternoon - and I am a Neil Young-supporter and have nothing to do with that band called "King Crimson". I lost the tape of "King Crimson" over the years - have no idea where it is. But -as it is not allowed to seed them here it is not as tragic (for me).

This was my very first ever Neil Young in concert-experience in a long row.
..and for me it started with the worst.
I saw him so many times afterwards, but this here wasn't a real good start.
As I listened to it after many years I thought: oh, great start, but after half that concert it's getting boring: so many bad songs, for example "Like an Inca" is way too long - played here that evening with that band. I would love to hear it with the Horse, could be there for 60 minutes, but not that version you will listen to here. And the Hurricane is just a quick played simple Hurricane played for the about 50.000 people on the field.
Anyway, as this is from my master. it's worth a download and put it in your collection.

2007 Chrome Dreams Continental Tour Compilation

A Compilation of the just completed USA Neil Young Tour. Only mastering done to tracks was to groupwave normalize them to -12db in Adobe Audtion. Fade in/out was also performed on each track. I broke it up into 4 discs to better reflect the set makeup of the shows. I also attempted to include at least one track from each venue on the tour. I've listened to it all together 3 times and am quite happy with how it sounds.

Thanks to all the tapers and uploaders! It truly was a great tour! Looking forward to hearing all you European Tapers work in 2008!

This is a compilation of every song from the European tour

Last year I put together a compilation of the American tour

As before, I've compared each version of every song from all the recordings I have (nearly all of them!) and picked the best version to my ears. I'm no expert on recording equipment so I have no idea what the difference is between the mics the tapers use, what quality they are or even how much they cost.
I don't care as long as the end result sounds good, so I'll leave the expertise to the tapers!

A lot of the acoustic songs I've selected are from the first show of the tour Antwerp Feb 11, an outstanding recording.
Some noted it as near soundboard in quality. All the songs from that first set are included here.
Best recording of the tour accolade to reelclasio.
Many of the songs from the electric set are from the excellent recordings from Amsterdam.

Sorry if the shows you attended aren't here, as I've mentioned I've gone for the best sound.

I've put all the piano songs together onto Disc 2, same as before.
Disc 3 is all the songs from the main electric set bar No Hidden Path which has had to go on Disc 4 with the short encores.
Disc 5 is the long encores plus The Sultan

It was this evening Neil at his best, I think the acoustic set didn't start as good as the previous evening, but the song selection changed everything!
Neil was talkative inbetween songs and in a good mood.

Try: first performance ever in Europe
This song was introduced during the American Continental tour after someone in Portland called for a song, Neil replied something and an other person in the audience said in a response "Try it". On which Neil replied: "That's a good one, and asked someone aside of the stage to write it down" Obviously Neil only heard Try (instead of Try it) A couple of shows later the song which was only known by it's title was introduced in the set.

Cowgirl In The Sand:
As far as I know this song was only played in Europe in the UK: both in 1973 during the Tonight's The Night Tour and in 1976 at the Hammersmth Odeon.
( The song I have been waiting for to hear live for more than 26 years.)


Final song of the evening:

The Sultan:
First performance ever in Europe, the song was played only a limited number of times during the US Continental tour.

Rockin'In The Free world: A song often played live since 1989, but was not played during the US Continental tour.

Here is our recording from last weeks show at the Grand Rex theatre in Paris. I don't know how it sounds compared with the other available recording(s) as I haven't been able to listen to these yet.
I think the sound is comparable with our Antwerpen and Amsterdam recordings.
The second Paris show (15 February) will be posted here in the comming days/week.

This recording is dedicated to our good friend Klaas, who could not make it to the Paris shows due to sad family circumstances.

Neil aborted from Hank To Hendrix after a couple of minutes as he was disturbed by all the photographers taken pictures.Also a drunk man was shouting early in the show and was near the photographers when the song was aborted. Photographers had to leave before he would continue. They returned at the beginning of the electric set.

Editing with Audobe Audition 1.5 Had to adjust sound/applause and bass levels to get a somewhat flowing set.

The 17th and 18th were recorded (filed) from row 3 B section, the 20th from row 5 B section.

Sound quality seems pretty good to me, but you'll be the judge of that. There is some occasional sniffin' in the mics like at the start of Old King,
but that's all in the game.
Recorded by Otto, one of the founding fathers of the Dutch Masters Collective.

In case you're using 80 minute discs I'd suggest to split the acoustic part after track A10 Love in Mind and the Electric set after track E12 The Believer.
Using 90 minute discs will get you the electric set up until E14 No Hidden Path on one disc.

Due to a very loud clapper in front of the microphones I used the 'Click and Crackle removal'to delete him from the recording. Graphiq fading on all the applause parts between songs to make it listenable.
As there was an conversation going on between someone in the audience on the balcony and Neil on stage about the sound quality I increased the volume of that part with 6db.

This evening was - again - Neil at his best. he was in a very good mood, open for suggestions as he played Stringman as a request made by Bry Carter from the UK. (The first request for this song by him can be heard on the Paris recording of the 14th February)
We have to thank Bry for this.

Also included in the set are the rarely played songs Kansas and Try.

It seems that Neil is ready for some changes in the setlist: In the electric set The Believer was replaced by Powderfinger. Also on stage a painting for a song which has not yet been played was visible. (I will not mention the title here, but if Too Far Gone is included in the setlist of the forthcomming shows I will not be surprised)

From the 10 ( 4 US + 6 European)shows I've been to, tonight's No Hidden Path was the best of all.

This concert was the third/last concert in The Netherlands as part of the 2008 European Chrome Dreams Continental Tour.

Neil was in a good mood, quite talkative (about "Analog", Cars, Need for scientists) and responding to the public.
The acoustic set was played full of passion and sophistication. The rock-set had very intense versions that made the audience out of their seats for the encores.

The recording was made from the first row right in front of Neil and a speaker. This created a 'right in the face' sound and less of an ambient concert hall sound (for which my gear is more suited). The sound of the encores is more capturing the stage sound as I was standing in front of the stage next to enthousiastic fans.

Great seats to see Neil, but unfortunately not my favourite spot: underneath the spealer stack - still great sound.

REMASTER NOTES:

With kind permission from Wonderful I've remastered his excellent 1st row recording. When I read his notes on Traders Den and then heard the mp3 sample I knew this was thee Grand Slam of the Euro-Tour! I say that because Wonderful was positioned directly in front of a speaker on the stage. When I saw Neil in Philly back in December I thought that it would be great to be postioned in front of one of those speakers with the right gear. You must also have nerves of STEEL as you are also in the spotlight almost as much as Neil himself! There's no level checking or flashing of equipment when you're right THERE! The Goons are scanning the crowd from the wings. Security is paying close attention to make sure the 1st row doesn't rush the stage etc. Everything has to fall into place. Anyways...we can all be thankful that this recording can off without a hitch...It's SO nice you can even hear "the buzz" Neil is refering to on one of his talks in the 1st set thanks to that small speaker at the front of the stage that Wonderful and his rig were nicely seated in front of and wired for sound! All I can say is listen to the samples and THANK YOU "WONDERFUL" for taping this show and allowing me to share this remaster!

The sound was excellent & I am quite happy with this recording considering my basic gear.
Recorded from the Balcony. Will be interested to hear how recordings from the Stalls compare.
For the acoustic set I reduced the volume during applause as it was a bit overpowering.

I decided to record Night 2 at the Apollo partly due to my good seat location, and partly because I wanted to thank all the tapers on this tour for their fantastic recordings. It was a truly great tour!!

As detailed above I am uploading this on behalf of simonlec.
I too attended the two Manchester shows but this time decided against taping as I really wanted to enjoy the shows to their fullest and given the great recordings from every night so far was confident better recordings than mine would surface.

I was right. This recording is I believe exceptionally good in both acoustic and electric sets and is why I am happy to upload this for simon.

These shows have simply been magnificent. Neil is on top form playing better than ever and in venues where both performer and audience can feel the atmosphere.

Out of my 7,000+ shows and radio broadcasts, I have many concerts that were special for some reasons: the setlist, the musicians, the venue or unexpected events. These are the ones I'd like to propose you. Most of these come from my cassettes collection, so they will be released at a slower pace than my Master Series! But you won't be disappointed! I will try to gather the most unusual things I have in my collection and, as always, your feedback and comments will be my reward for all the work involved in this project.

Finally, some notes about your truly ldb: I have been a fan of live music since I was 9 years old (that is where I attended my very first show, a PFM/De André gig at Milano's Palalido) and my first taped show was at 11 using a crappy portable cassette player with embedded microphone. I become more serious about taping in 1983 when I started to record every show. In 1991 I acquired my first Sony Professional and in 2000 I moved to MiniDisc to finally settle on R-09 in early 2008.

I have attended over 500 shows in my career. Most of them were taped but for others bad luck struck and I could not record it: on top of my mind there's a Paul McCartney show in 1993 in Milano where I was caught by the security or Porcupine Tree in Roma in March 1999 when the DAT machine would seem to work but listening back to the tape there
would just be a long bunch of silence. Or during a Y.Malmsteen show where I got so annoyed that I left halfway through the show and erased the tape and finally on a PFM show in Milano in 2007 where I had to leave before the encore because the baby-sitter had to leave early that evening. Some other times I was very close not to tape or had to do it in extremely difficult situations: for the four Peter Gabriel shows at Earls Court in 1987 security was checking tapers with metal detector; at the David Gilmour comeback show in London in 2001 at RFH I had the security guy sitting next to me but I managed to tape the show without checking one single time my MiniDisc!

There was a time I was travelling anywhere in Europe to see shows, especially if there was no touring in Italy: I remember Rush in Paris in 1992 when the trio did not even know what Italy was. I have seen shows at stadiums (Genesis at Wembley) and in places with 30 people (Porcupine Tree in Milano in 1997); bands that would later become huge (Pearl Jam in a free show for 150 people) and masters of jazz (Miles Davis or Sarah Vaughan). Shows I will never forget (Pink Floyd at Versailles castle) and some I would rather forget (no comment...).

I truly believe that live music is what keeps music alive, what make us enjoying it together, what allow us to have deep feelings and transmit it to others. Studio records are nowadays 'commodities': you can buy online as anonymous wav files and listen in your iPod or at home. Live music will always imply an effort to buy the tix, travel to the venue, see the show, think about it when coming back home.

Before leaving to California, I have quickly edited my recording from thursday night. To be honest, I was not that impressed but also have to say that last time I saw Neil Young live was over 20 years ago. Bercy was almost sold out but not completely. Very hot and humid inside. Some tracks had that lenghty guitar ending, endlessly over and over.
Walk Like A Giant had this 5 minutes coda of pure sound which got most of the audience angry. I saw many people leaving the hall right before the encores.

The new material sounds very good in the live format. The selection of oldies waw a bit the same as 20 years ago...I would have expected a bit more fantasy...

Le cri d’un coq, des chiens qui aboient dans le lointain, le bruit du vent, de l’eau… On n’a pas l’habitude d’entendre ça dans un album de rock, encore moins dans le cadre d’un enregistrement live. Mais c’est Neil Young qui a choisi d’ajouter ces sons à un album dans lequel il a voulu célébrer la beauté de la Terre et également les dangers qui la guettent. Et qui s’appelle Earth. Il sort à la fin de la semaine prochaine et accompagne une tournée française qui a commencé à Lille.

About the mics : DPA produces long hanging microphones, designed to capture live ambient sounds, under the 4098 model.
DPA 4099 are technically the same but they are smaller.

My friends Kristof31 and Zuo made other recordings of this show; it was nice to meet them again !

Pictures are featured in the torrent : my position was a bit far for my kind of camera but i got some correct results.

Tapers Notes:

With an average age of 70, the performances were sometimes uneven, but Neil Young was a stand out. What was odd was the fact that Neil Young's stage set up was conceptual on an epic scale with six large Native American tepees placed the full length of the stage, and a burlap-colored backdrop labeled with the words "Seeds of Life," "Organic" and "Indio, CA." His set began with a flash of an old Indian chief TV test pattern on the big screens as two women in overalls walked the stage throwing seeds to the floor. The central event in Young's set was an explosive "Down by the River," clocking in at over 22 minutes.
