Notes : From Dave Styles - The Fillmore "Scottish Jig" is, in fact two jigs - almost certainly Irish, one being a "normal" jig in 6/8 and the second being "Comb Your Hair And Curl It". The first we couldn't place, but is almost certainly an unknown trad Irish Jig - possibly even somewhere in Robin's tune book.

Special thanks to David V. for hookin' it up with this wonderful show, and to Shane Pope and Paul Bryant, who put together the "Relics of the ISB" website. Their site is a valuable resource for info on ISB ROIOs, from which I copied the setlist and notes section. Visit it at:

From Wikipedia:
In August, they were slotted to play on Friday the 15th when all the folk-oriented and acoustic acts were expected to perform. However, the band refused to perform in the pouring rain, so stage manager John Morris rescheduled their performance for the following day. he following day, 16 August 1969, at approximately 6:30 p.m., the band played in between the Keef Hartley Band and Canned Heat. When the time came for them to perform the next day, the crowd was extremely far from Zen-like The crowd was not anticipating the band's performance on a day that featured mainly hard rock acts. For that reason, the group was generally disfavoured and, perhaps more importantly, were not included in the filming of the festival

The second British Rock Meeting was suppose to take place on Friesenheimer Island in Mannheim, Germany; however, the Mannheim city council opposed it and MAMA Concerts had to change the venue. The early posters still show Mannheim as the festival location. As can be seen on the left, the original poster was done in blue, with Mannheim as the venue, new posters were printed in red after the promoters found an alternate site to hold the festival. MAMA Concerts first tried to relocate the festival to Korsika and then to the racetrack in Hockenheim but strong reaction from the city councils made these sites unacceptable.

After much searching, the concert promoters were finally able to relocate the festival to Insel Grün (Green Island) in Germersheim. Even then, it looked like the festival would not happen as Germersheim city officials began having second thoughts about allowing so a large festival to be held on Insel Grün and issued a police order against the festival the day prior to its start. City officials relented however after eleventh hour talks with the festival organizers, the mayor of Germersheim, and a top Rheinland Pfalz state official. Over 70,000 people attended this 4-day festival and 35 bands performed there, including Pink Floyd, Uriah Heep, Status Quo, Lindisfarne, and of course, Rory Gallagher.

*** Robin introduces this song with it's proper title (which i can't quite make out, but from a few articles i remember reading in the past, 'Whether Near or Far' seems to be the title the song went under -it may be incorrect though).

An audience recording that came into my hands a few years ago (no idea who recorded the show though), which i cleaned up a bit. It is a touch hissy in places, but certainly (in my opinion anyway) doesn't spoil ones enjoyment of the gig.

Both Robin & Bina left the String Band shortly after this tour & so didn't join the rest of the group, when they eventually did the tour of America, which Robin mentions is possibly on the cards the following year.

I really liked this version of the band (unlike some folk) & saw them four or five times during this period. A bit shambolic at times perhaps, but still Great!!!

Artwork included.

As with most of my bootlegs, i acquired them from loads of different places such as blogs, bootleg sites & from purchasing them in shady markets (before i had use of the internet & knew anything about torrents & file sharing) & i really can't tell where every individual recording came from.

so in advance: a thousand apologies to any of the tapers or individuals who originally placed these recordings up for all of us to lavish our love upon.

thank you very much for sharing, i only mean to do the same & take no credit for these bootlegs being born into our collective lap.

September 25 2004 Early Show

Recording by dgk on a Sony D7 using Sonic Studios DSM-6 Binaural mikes.

A review from the ISB Yahoo group follows, including the setlist. I threw in an extra track mark in the second song which explains why there are only 10 songs listed in the setlist and 11 in the posting.

---------- --

Well, we just got in from having seen the ISB perform at Joe's Pub.
This was our first time seeing the ISB, although our friend Paul who is almost 20 years older than us saw them in their heyday at the Fillmore East.

First off, we would like to point out that we had a fantastic time and we find it hard to believe that anyone seeing the group at this point could walk away dissatisfied. My husband was lucky enough to come across Mike Heron while in his search for the men's room. He had a chance to introduce himself and shake hands and found Mike to be a very humble and friendly person.

Joe's Pub is a small but homey environment. This was our first time there and we would gladly go back again. The food, drink, and service were all fine. We were an arm's throw from the stage, so basically the String Band were sitting in our laps.

We sat at Monica McCabe's table, which included about 14 people. It was great meeting Monica, Kevin, Carol, and the other lovely people who were with us at the table.

The opening act, a group called Espers that consisted of what looked like very young people played some light and airy music that set an easy going mood for the evening.

The String Band hit the stage and opened with "Everything's Fine Right Now." Mike Heron's enthusiastic smile set a mood of whimsy that carried through their entire performance. Clive Palmer looks as if he has a well kept joke to himself. For when he lifts his head up from his banjo playing, he always seems to be wearing a smirk.
Lawson Dando is a delight on keyboards, slide guitar (which was made great use of on the "Hedgehog's Song"), and anything else he could get his hands on to play. These men provided that NY audience with such a fun and uplifting experience, that there wasn't a person who walked out of there without a smile.

When the show was over, Mike was kind enough to chat with us a bit, sign our ticket stubs, and pose for a photo. The endearing thing about the ISB is that they are everyday folk with an extraordinary talent. At no point does one feel intimidated speaking with them, it's like running into old friends.

This lineup of the ISB brought a fresh sound to old songs that are truly timeless. For those who were put off by the sound of the recent radio interview, that was really more so the radio station's fault in that the dj was disorganized and didn't seem to know much about the band. We did not feel at any point that the group was not up to old standards, and one would have to admit that for their age, they still play damn well! Anyone expecting them to sound like when they were 20 years old is not allowing this group to grow with age.
While Clive Palmer's vocals are a bit jarring on "Ducks on a Pond" when you are used to Robin Williamson's interpretation, if you just take a minute to close your eyes and let the song unfold, that fantastic feeling you get whenever you hear it, will take it's rightfull place in your heart.

Setlist for the Early Show at Joe's Pub, NYC, NY 9/25/04:

Everything's Fine Right Now
Ducks on a Pond
Empty Pocket Blues
Hedgehog's Song (superb!)
You were made for me (Clive's solo)
Sleepers, awake
Painting Box
You know what you could be
Very Cellular Song
Over in the Old Golden Land

Thank you ISB for providing us with an incredible night of music!

Christina

One of the most engaging groups to emerge from the esoteric '60s was the Incredible String Band. Basically the duo of Mike Heron and Robin Williamson, its sound was comprised of haunting Celtic folk melodies augmented by a variety of Middle Eastern and Asian instruments. Heron was a member of several rock bands in England in the early '60s, while Williamson and Clive Palmer played as a bluegrass and Scottish folk duo. Heron was asked to join as rhythm guitarist, and the trio named itself the Incredible String Band.

The band was spotted at a club by Joe Boyd, who was opening a British wing of Elektra Records. The trio gave Boyd a demo tape of mostly American bluegrass standards with a few original songs, which impressed him more than the standards. The Incredible String Band, released in 1966, featured mostly original numbers enthusiastically played in American and Celtic folk styles. Following the album's release, Williamson spent several months studying music in Morocco, and Palmer left the group to travel to Afghanistan. For the String Band's second album, The 5000 Spirits or the Layers of the Onion, exotic touches such as the Middle Eastern oud, Indian sitars, and tambouras began to permeate the group's sound. The band's lyrics also became more whimsical; highlights include Williamson's tale of insomnia "No Sleep Blues" and Heron's amorous "Painting Box."

The press raved about the Incredible String Band, and their next album, The Hangman's Beautiful Daughter, was the band's brief flirtation with stardom. Although the music was less commercial than its predecessor, the LP reached the Top Ten in the British album charts and was also the group's highest Billboard chart placing in America, reaching number 161. The songs became less structured, as on the opening, "Koeeoaddi There," which changed tempo frequently as it cascaded joyously with sitars and jaw harp. The album's centerpiece, "A Very Cellular Song," was a suite of short pieces sewn together with the folk song "Bid You Goodnight." For Wee Tam and the Big Huge, the Incredible String Band were augmented by Williamson and Heron's girlfriends, Licorice McKechnie and Rose Simpson.
The group also began to electrically amplify its instruments. This expanded lineup performed at the Woodstock festival in 1969, but due to circumstances it was not one of the band's most memorable performances. The Incredibles' slot was originally to be Friday night after Joan Baez; however, due to heavy rain, the band opted not to perform. Folksinger Melanie took The Incredibles' place and went down extremely well, writing her big hit "Candles in the Rain" about that moment. the Incredible String Band got a lukewarm reception the next afternoon between Creedence Clearwater Revival and Canned Heat.

At the turn of the '70s, the Incredible String Band began to lose some of their momentum. The album Changing Horses was not as engaging as the band's previous collections, and the group's eclecticism became a liability rather than an asset. Bassist and pantomimist Malcolm LeMaistre joined in 1971 for U, a well-received stage show that did not translate as easily to record. The band made the transition to electric rock & roll in 1972.
In 1974, following the album Hard Rope & Silken Twine, the Incredible String Band disbanded. Both founding members had prolific solo careers; Heron's took him in a rock direction, while Williamson explored his Celtic roots. For several years the band was seen as a dated anachronism. Recently, with the resurgence in interest in the psychedelic '60s as well as world music, the Incredible String Band's music has been rediscovered by new audiences won over by its mystical charm. A double CD of rare tracks, studio outtakes, and live performances, Tricks of the Senses, was released by Hux Records in 2009.
