9. Turtles Have Short Legs

Damo Suzuki: vocals
Michael Karoli: guitar
Irmin Schmidt: keyboards
Holger Czukay: bass
Jaki Liebezeit: drums

Sourced from MP3. Poor quality, due to general murkiness and mono sound. Despite that, I'd prefer a crap recording over no recording at all, any day.

The date is not certain. It can either be from October 22 or 23, 1971.

"Turtles Have Short Legs" is a rarity, and it actually resembles its studio version, which is freaking unbelievable to me, given how accustomed to live improvisations Can was.

Not much else to say; hope you enjoy!

This came from a collector circa 2001/2. I have two versions of this recording and this is the better one, its crisper, suffers far less with tape hiss and has a more natural (albeit limited) sounding high end in it.

Its a ok-ish audience recording which starts out a bit muffled until about 10:29 when it improves. However this muffled quality comes in and out across the recording. Whether its a product of source tape ageing or some kind of compression from the recorded used is unknown. It is a good show though if you like this period of Can and certainly has both mysterious and intense sections. This concert appeared on Dime about two years ago I recall but this is from my cd-r source, not from that version, and has never been on any tracker. Enjoy.

This is a great recording of Can from '73 and I am curious to know if it might be from a French radio broadcast as opposed to a straight mixing desk recording. There is a slight tape hiss to it and a few minor audio defects i.e. slight muffling here and there, which to my ears sound the kind of generation artefacts you might expect from analogue copying. It is however a very enjoyable listen, check out the sample. This concert may have appeared on Dime during a flood of Can recordings about two years ago but this is from my source procured about from a dealer circa 2003/4.

Seasonal greetings for Winter Solstice 2010!

RIP Don Van Vliet.

This is a wonderful and fascinating recording by Can, being the last show of Damo Suzuki. I recall a version of this was uploaded some years ago to Dime but this is not that version. It's an excellent recording so enjoy.

Notes:
This track comes from a torrent of the 1973 Edinburgh show where it was included; the original info file is added just below. It included some inaccurate information about the place where it was recorded; I took my infos from this excellent and highly recommended CAN concert listing: http://all-blues.de/music/kraut/canlive.htm

I like my music tagged so i tagged and also renamed the file.
I added an ffp and a new md5 file.
Other than that the file is untouched and as it came with the original torrent.

Tagged & re-seeded on Zomb by surfling january 2013.

All thanks go to the original seeder 'Gary' and to TomP for his fine remaster!

: Also have worn out 1st gen cassette from my own FM > reel-to-reel of the BBC part

Sbd master tapes>?>cdr
Probably 1st gen transfers

Changes Made (Nero 7):
Cross mixed all tracks (87:13), better instrument definition, less background noise
Centred the balance on all tracks
Removed the extreme (unrelated) applause bursts
Cross faded tracks to smoothe the transition
Fixed glitch at 3.52 track 02
Fixed varying balance on track 02 (before & just after the glitch)
Reduced the higher volume of track 03 announcements
Reduced volume of track 03 to match the others

Quality: Worth an A+ now

Got this one from Zomb to check out the quality against my Ebay copy and my worn out (from too much playing over the years) cassette of the BBC FM part, originally recorded on my old reel-to-reel (long lost). With some editing (above) it is now a really good sounding set, so do grab it while you can...

...Enjoy !!

Notes: There has always been some confusion about CAN's Bataclan shows in January 1975. I have no idea if the only played the two shows on the 17th and the 29th, and if maybe they played two shows on one of those nights. Anyway, I acquired this show here in a trade several years ago and it came as "Paris January 75" with the setlist mentioned above which is clearly different from the showed believed to be from January 29, 1975 but may be a more complete version of the January 17 show recently reseeded by fbauer: http://www.dimeadozen.org/torrents-details.php?id=480094

"FUTURE DAYS" - tour

source:
SBD recording
lineage: Sony UX100 (Chrome) -> Tascam 464 -> Protools -> AIFF -> FLAC

No compression or noise reduction used at all

note:
this is the first digitisation of this cassette which came from a trader in the early 90's.
It has been in storage since 1995 and just rediscovered. Its nowhere near the fidelity of the '73 Edinburgh show which I seeded recently but of historial interest to all of those who like Can in this initial post Damo period
and before they had dedicated vocalists again. Michael Karoli features on vocals here and there but its mostly instrumentals with some themes from 'Soon over Babluma'.

I am going by the date on the cassette but stating that I notice that it doesn't correlate with any of the dates on the excellent Can resource at http://all-blues.de/music/kraut/canlive.htm
The song lengths, however, almost match the listings for the Bataclan 1975-01-29 performance. Hence it could be that this recorded set could be that one but unless someone can confirm empirically with a copy of the 29th Jan show I am staying with the date that came with the tape.

In regards its audio qualities it is a reasonable mixing desk recording but possibly because of low levels in previous transfers it has a slightly muffled quality here and there plus a layer of hiss.
The original cassette speed was about 5% too fast so that was attended to with the pitch control on the Tascam and the overall stereo levels were volume boosted to minimise noise. There is not much in the way of cymbals, its quite a dry recording but I'd welcome someone having a go at remastering it unless a lower generation copy could be upped. As with other recent ups I haven't seen this recording on DIME during the time I've been on here nor through searches. However it may well have made an appearance before from another source. Its a funky show so in any case please enjoy!

supplier source notes
jonsatticuk: A stereo audience recording. Sound quality is perfectly acceptable though not as good as the previous day's show at Colchester. Not sure if this one has been widely circulated before. Exact lineage is unknown but it does sound very low generation. With thanks to Richard for the original transfer from his cassette.

tezeta: I passed the main part of this excellent concert share by jonsatticuk to my kind friend flambay for speed correction. flambay did a very careful and accurate job.
I picked up the end of "Full Moon" and the final enacore as high-range VBR MP3's from a CDr entitled "Live, Landed" and while they have some significant phasing problems and a somewhat shaky sound environment, I still think it is quite acceptable and a stellar performance, so I left them as is, except for converting them to WAV for speed adjustment.
You will hear the transition to the CDr around the 14th minute of "Full Moon". To the MP3 sources I applied speed reduction of -0.165 semis, done in Reaper with the files converted to WAV. Some song titles were also adjusted for historical accuracy.

YKW's additional remastering (Sound Forge 6) notes:
I think this is from even more sources than stated, for example the opening Chain Reaction sounds like it is further from the stage (and is boomy and overloaded) and in later tracks we can hear different people chatting at different points and the stereo dimension keeps changing throughout. Anyway, I basically attempted to EQ it all the same (not quite possible) repair the levels, glitches and drop-outs, and also do a better overlap in Full Moon... I also cut out some bits of audience that had been clumsily inserted and replaced some close chit-chat with ambience. Also fixed one tape splice in "The Gypsy".

Two Can shows from different ends of 1976. Both with excellent sound quality. I believe both are audience recordings but then again I could be wrong. Another superb sounding audience recording of a Can show from January 1976. I received this in a trade back around 2002 and unfortunately it's origins are unknown although given the quality probably very low gen. The actual venue is unknown and the CAN database at http://all-blues.de/music/kraut/can.htm doesn't offer any clues either.

ykw: "fbauer says, 'source: FM recording, aired by BBC Radio Nottingham.'

However, this wasn't broadcasted. I know, I was living in north Leicestershire at the time and we could get BBC Radio Nottingham. It was listed in the local Radio Times, so I tuned in to discover that week's "Rock Goes to College" broadcast had been cancelled for some sport event.

Clearly this is an audience recording, from someone toward mid-center of the hall. Clues were the many clunks, thuds and rustles as the recorder moved around during the concert (most of these I have removed). It's also mono, and BBC Radio Nottingham broadcast in stereo in 1977.

This is re-EQ'd and sharpened/boosted, with some level corrections and clumsy edits between the tracks removed.

Speed increased by +0.44 semitones as suggested by tezeta, in Sound Forge."

Lineage: A Pinch of Can 2CDr > WAV sent via web > FLAC w/ TLH

This fragment of "Animal Waves" is absolutely superb, and it's a shame that more of the concert wasn't recorded. I hope all of you will enjoy regardless of length as it's a very good quality extract from a rare phase of the band's late incarnation. With many, many thanks to Andy Hooker for sharing the Pinch of Can boot with me, as well as the excellent Bordeaux concert from March '76, which I've put on the tracker already.
