Inside the Dream Syndicate, Vol. 3: Stainless Steel Gamelan
Review by Thom Jurek

This third volume of the Inside the Dream Syndicate series is also the fourth to feature John Cale, his Sun Blindness music, recorded during the same period is somehow outside this series. As on volume two, this set features Cale in collaboration and solo with producer Tony Conrad (who owns these archive recordings), Sterling Morrison, his mate in the Velvet Underground, Terry Jennings, and Angus MacLise (oh yes, and the New York Fire Department). All of the pieces date from the early to mid-1960s. The set opens with the title cut, with Morrison and Cale performing on something called a "cembalett" (small cimbalom) and a fretless guitar. Here, as in many of the early minimalism pieces, the concentration was on modulation and pitch, here recumbent themes payer upon one another as a main pulse flows through the center of the mix. Various tonalities and timbres glint in and out of the musical body creating an entirely new set of sonorific pulses. On the album's longest work, "At About this Time, Mozart Was Dead and Joseph Conrad Was Sailing the Seven Seas Learning English," at nearly half an hour for wollensack, viola, and guitar, tape edits are sliced into the mix, altering whole tones and creating intervals out of seeming half and semi-quavers. Interestingly, since the notion of the piece is to move ever upward, these cuts seem to create intervals of modulation where there were none. There is also an awesome, fearsome piece between Cale and Conrad (who plays something called a "thunder machine") to accompany Cale's electric piano on "After the Locust." It feels like John Cage's early experiments with amplification combined with the dense aggressiveness of the Velvet Underground. The tape experiment with the Fire Department is akin to something Luc Ferrari would create in the late 1960s, and is interesting in that it gives nothing of its source material away in the mix. The piece with MacLise and Jennings, "Terry's Cha-Cha," is a lighthearted bit of musical misanthropy that has nothing whatsoever to do with minimalism, but everything to do with MacLise's later involvement in studying Eastern music. There is melody, harmony, and a sense of rhythm from MacLise that is otherworldly. Again, this is another revelatory chapter in a music from a bygone yet ever present era. Even today, this series of discs sounds more revolutionary, more forward thinking and looking than just about anything else.

This is the legendary New Year's Eve show at the Palladium, headlined by the Patti Smith Group,
with Television and John Cale opening. Silent film from (backstage) this night was featured in the Amos Poe
documentary "The Blank Generation." The Television and Cale sets are both previously uncirculated and taken
from the master cassette.

Taped by odoc55 -- thank you for taping and sharing!
Artwork by G the Cock -- thanks as always, G!

I have included some ephemera in the form of .jpegs, which help document this night (Rock Scene coverage,
ticket stub, flier, et al). Thanks to Vineland for sharing these.

Audience master cassette > HD > Sound Forge (indexing) > Flac frontend (level 6).

Unfortunately, this show was overdubbed on a previously recorded tape...so tape hiss is evident. Also, I
believe the taper was trying to conserve space on his C90 cassette, and paused the recording between songs
during the Cale set; most of the songs cut in. This recording runs about 30 minutes; whether it is the complete
set, I can't say. I have inquired of several Cale collectors but have not found a more complete (or any other)
recording of Cale this date. If anyone has a more complete or better-sounding recording, do share.

Artist: Jean-Luc Ponty
Date: 20th October 1972
Venue: ?, Hamburg
Country: Germany
Source: Radio broadcast (FM?)
Quality: A or A- (A on my list but I tend to be generous sometimes...heck it's 1972 Ponty!!!)

Received this in a trade - I have no knowledge as to what generation this is, but given how it sounds (and who I got it from) it's got to be pretty low, the sound quality is pretty solid for 1972.

The lineup is probably as follows:
Jean-Luc Ponty: el-violin
Jasper van'Hof: keyboards
Henry Texier: bass
Aldo Romano: drums

The exact venue is a mystery...

Track titles have been kept exactly how I received them - I assume it's NDR as opposed to NPR. So, given all that(!) this is how the lineage looks...

Lineage: CD-R received in trade > EAC (secure mode - log included) > FLAC (Level 6 - via TLH - ffp included) > YOU!

Jean-Luc Ponty - Hamburg 1976-09-17 FM - Reseed - Includes 5 Samples

Here's a favorite Jean-Luc Ponty recorded in his 70's prime! French Violinist Jean-Luc Ponty had been a solo artist since the mid 60's, but it was through his sessions with Frank Zappa and Mahavishnu Orchestra lp's that showcased his talent to an American audience. With the addition of Sweetbottom guitarist Darryl Stuermer in late 1975, Jean-Luc's inventiveness became electrified. This set was recorded on his "Imaginary Voyage" tour is taken from a FM re-broadcast and features songs from his first three lp's on Atlantic Records. It is Classic Ponty! All Praise to the original recordist and seeder, and as always your Comments Are Appreciated!
