01-I Will Follow Him Who Follows Me Into Eternity
02-What Need Have I For This, What Need Have I For That, I Am Dancing at the Feet of My Lord All is Bliss, All is Bliss

Pretty sure this has been upped here before this. I can't honestly recall where I got it, and whether it was here or through a cd-r trade. In any case, many thanks to whoever made it available to me. I'm seeding this now in response to requests from the Turiyananda Sangit-Early Shakti show from NYC in March, 1975 that I recently upped. My guess is that the ensemble would've done these demos under the Turiyananda Sangit name in 1974 because the 1975 show was under that name. I'm also not sure about Zakir Hussain's participation here since he wasn't on that March, 75 gig. It does however sound to me like there are 2 percussionists, and my scant knowledge of Indian percussion instruments generally seems to indicate that the mridangam has a somewhat deeper sound than tablas.
Very uncertain too as to any reaction this may have elicited at Columbia/CBS. They obviously did release 3 Shakti albums, but I Will Follow Him never made it on to any of them. I know there's been lots of talk and speculation about what from John this record company may have, and why it wasn't released, and whether it ever will be. That would include what became the Mahavishnu boot Wild Strings, this, the vocal ensemble pieces (with John playing (that were supposed to be part of a 2 record set with Visions of the Emerald Beyond), and the remainder of the Southampton College show from Long Island that provided the material for the first Shakti album. With John now being a pretty robust 80 year old, and the rest of any participants near to that (not to mention those of us lucky enough to hear them and see shows when they were current), these boots and shares might be the best we'll ever get.
This is the final Johnny Mac Acoustic installment from me. This is one more than I'd intended, and it's been fun.
Please support all of the musicians you admire by paying to see them perform, and by purchasing their commercially released material.

So the story goes: I answered an ad on Craigslist for 500 free Grateful Dead tapes.
On picking them up from the taper, I'm also informed he and a friend recorded other bands through the 70's.
These were never circulated, and deemed inferior in quality.
When I inquired about digitizing his masters, he laughingly obliged.
Some of the old Ampex and BASF tapes are in poor shape, one completely off the spool, and several squealing badly.
I will be presenting the ones of superior quality only, out of the initial batch he loaned me.
I do believe these shows will be lovingly embraced by the Dime community, and will be shared here exclusively.

Notes:
This is a version of this recording that I compiled from two sources. I think we now have the complete recording/performance.

SOURCE 1 (labeled as 3/9/77): Most of this is taken from an unknown audience > ? > CDR source. This source was apparently missing the last 30 second of t3 and the last 17 minutes of t4.

SOURCE 2 (labeled as 3/3/77): In September 2012, taperchuck3 posted this source, with detailed lineage, at Traders Den. This source was missing t2, and also had cuts between some tracks.

Both sources sounded similar (clearly from the same original source recording), but I liked the tone of source 1, even though it has a little hiss (hey, it gives it character). So I kept all of source 1 (mainly because the first 3 tracks flowed with nothing missing, no cuts between tracks). Source 1 cut off around the 45 minutes mark (usually the limit of one side of a 90 minute cassette tape). Therefore, Source 1 was missing the last 30 seconds of t3, which I spliced in from source 2. Also, source 1 was apparently missing the last 17 minutes of t4, which I spliced in from source 2.

The correct date is March 9, because McLaughlin announces that it was Zakir's birthday.

Enjoy, because this really is one of THE best quality Shakti live recordings that exists. The quality really is excellent and the venue sounds intimate. I can say this with confidence having recently compared the quality of all of the live Shakti recordings I had in order to get rid of some and trim down my CDR collection...

I finished out 2016 by seeding a couple of Shakti shows, one of which turned out to be from the wrong date and venue and was identical in the end to the show identified as coming from the Shaboo Inn in Willimantic, CT that's still running on the tracker. I told the mods and my incorrectly identified seed has been removed. This still leaves very few Shakti shows active on the tracker.
This prompts me to start my 2017 uploads with another Shakti show that's probably been up here before, but isn't now. It's a BBC John Peel show that's pretty short, but kind of nice in that it features 2 tracks that aren't particularly common to a lot of the longer Shakti sets. Not sure about the original equipment used to record this from the Beeb, but this is not a particularly pristine FM recording, that is nonetheless a nice listen in the end.
This is sometimes traded with the original Shakti CBS demos added on as filler. There's also a recording that gets my vote for being the best sounding Shakti show (apart from the McLaughlin Montreux box set) from a live concert from 3 days after this that was broadcast on the Beeb later that month.I'm sure that's been up before too, but I'll seed that separately.
Thanks to whoever recorded this show and to the person who traded it to me.
Please support these great artists by paying to see them live and by purchasing their commercially released material.

Here's another BBC Shakti broadcast from May, 1977. I'm sure this must have been on DIME before this, but it's not as we start 2017. It's a fine recording that's about as good of a listen to live Shakti that you'll get outside of the John McLaughlin Montreux box set.
It's a great set from a great band that's woefully overlooked by many who glory in the golden age of fusion and John McLaughlin's output in general. Shakti was definitely fusion, but certainly a different fusion from what we generally think with that term.
Thanks to whoever recorded this show and to the person who traded it to me.

comments:
"Shakti" is a Hindu word meaning sacred force, power or energy, and it's a fitting name for this outfit, here performing one of their last shows before a very long interruption of recording albums or touring. It featured some of the greatest musicians of India, some of their instruments are not very familiar outside of Indian music, and their music is truly a style of its own.
This original Shakti band of 1975-77 has one official live release which is very nice, from their July 5, 1975 show at Southampton College, Long Island, N.Y. and their 2 Montreux concerts of July 6, 76 and July 8, 77 are both available in a 17 disc boxset of John McLaughlin Live in Montreux (several of his shows, although the earliest Mahavishnu one is from 1974, not the original one unfortunately).
There were 2 shows this night by Shakti, I don't know which one this is but I think it is the early show. There may be one flip cut in here, it's very close to the whole show and it is nice sound quality, I'd say fairly comparable to the sound of the Boston 76 Shakti show upped on dime by shopkin. That's from the Handful of Beauty tour, this is near the end of the Natural Elements tour (the final show was in Phila. 3 days after this one. The whole thing runs about 85 minutes. Since Shakti had to cancel out of their early 77 Berklee concert (with Oregon!) and played the Orpheum in 76, these 2 shows were Shakti's 1st in the acoustically delightful Berklee. The wooden walls provide very good sound resonance for this kind of music and the performance was solid. In my opinion, the finest acoustic band around, and a show with Oregon would have been a showcase of the 2 best, in my view. Maybe because that was to be my 1st Shakti concert (and McLaughlin recording) and Shakti cancelled out of that, I didn't see this show. Wish I had. Even though they didn't do my favorite song on Natural Elements, Mind Ecology, this was a fine show and nice sound that any fan of McLaughlin and/or Shakti's very talented crew would be glad to hear. This was one of the 1st live Shakti shows I ever heard, got this tape close to 30 years ago just a couple of years after the show, it's still one of my favorite Shakti shows today.
Do not sell this recording.

Here's an alternate capture of the recent Shakti show in Port Chester, NY at the Capitol Theater. It was the 2nd night of the current and ongoing N.American Tour marking their 50th anniversary. I went back and forth for a while about going to see them, but I obviously did, and WOW! It was a great night, and John is as astounding a guitarist at 81 as he's been through his incredible career. Beyond that, it was very obvious how much this version of Shakti was into doing this. An early Shakti composition from their first album was called Joy, and Joy was pretty evident throughout.
My hemming and hawing was a combination of ticket prices, and the fact that I really don't believe this to be the 50th anniversary of them as a performing entity. They were first known as Turiyananda Sangit, and did demos for CBS in 1974, but to my knowledge didn't perform publicly prior to March, 1975 at St. Thomas Episcopal Church in NYC (I was there). I was also at the July, 1975 Southampton College performance, some of which resulted in the first Shakti album, released in 1976. This may well be the 50th anniversary of John and Zakir starting to work together, but they weren't Shakti in 73. 1973 was a very busy year of touring and recording for the original Mahavishnu Orchestra and for the McLaughlin-Santana project. No matter, in the end. I am so glad I went to this show!
I sat right next to the mixing board, and could see each new song come up on a computer with presets and/or notes by the mixing deck. The sound was great. I didn't have very noisy neighbors nearby during the show, although there were the occasional hoots and whoops that can sometimes make witnessing a musical performance by great players seem a little more like being at a sporting event. My recording of both opener, John Scofield, and Shakti came out really well, but I did spice up what my Edirol's internal mics gave me with post recording EQ and Mastering done via the live editing possible in Audacity. I feel that those results more accurately represented particular things, such as the depth of the percussion and dynamics in Shankar Mahadevan's voice. The samples will give an accurate representation of what to expect when downloading this torrent. I edited out about 4 minutes of applause while waiting for the encore, and led out of that with a fade, which was something I repeated at the end of Bridge of Sighs when the group left the stage for the evening.
If you're a fan of this group, do yourself a favor, and do see them if that's possible near to where you live. Given John's age and European residency who knows if he'll pass this way again. This was well worth the ticket price and nearly 2 hour drive for me to the venue. Quite happy I went, and now get to share this alternate capture to the one that was recently uploaded by pschnob. If you're over at TTD too, I'll soon try to share my capture of the opener's set there (he's not allowed here).
