After hearing MANY live recordings of Nico during her "band phase" I finally heard this one which is THE Holy Grail IMHO. Clutch Cargo's in Detroit on July 6, 1982. Firstly the fidelity is a fantastic and well-balanced soundboard recording with a great engineer who really knew the system well. All the instruments sound great and Nico herself was in very fine form yet not overly loud like many soundboard recordings in small clubs. Secondly, the Blue Orchids band had really hit their stride at this point, but had not been infected by that "mid-80's" gear problem of early digital keyboards and flanger and chorus pedals on everything. Blue Orchids were all former members of The Fall with the drummer from Durutti Column and they sound like it! This is as close to Nico singing for Joy Division as you'll ever get. Guitar is lightly distorted with some nice slapback echo on it, Keyboards are a real Fender Rhodes with straight up solid bass and drums. Perfect! Post-punk. We also get a nice lengthy solo section performed very well by Nico alone with her harmonium complete with banter telling some dumb girls to "shut up please" and a typical false start due to what sounds like a wobbling harmonium on the stage. My only complaint is that it isn't longer and sadly the start of One More Chance was missed. Thanks to Robert Nemecek for sharing this one! Here's the setlist and download codes! GET IT and enjoy! Seriously...do it!
