AMM --- BBC Maida Vale Studios Jan 1988? -------- Source: BBC FM broadcast > Aiwa 640 record > Aiwa 880 replay > Yamaha 1300 HD recorder Transfer AMQR CDR > EAC > Flac Frontend (level 6) Editing: None Quality: A++, with relatively little hiss for this vintage ---------- -- This is an ultra-rare performance of AMMmusic by this elemental, yet reclusive group of improv pioneers who are acknowledged as pivotal influences on many improv groups, notably Henry Cow, who were to follow. Actual members of AMM have varied over the years and even performance to performance, Keith and Eddie being a core from 1966, when AMMmusic was first recorded. This particular group is exceptionally rare and to my ears, the very best I've ever heard from AMM. I heard AMM just once live, with the addition of Lou Gare (sax), live at Crawley and it was not even close to the quality of this superb post, especially as de Saram is far more prominent and audible without the presence of Gare (others may disgree of course). The performance is humbling, awesome and about as extreme as music gets (as opposed to noise from meisters like Merzbow and Borbetomagus). Dynamics are absolutely huge and quite amazing, given limitations of the cassette medium, audibly better replayed on the Aiwa 880 deck I got off Ebay to replace my treasured 3-head 640 which just died. It is amazing to think that much of this recording is actually acoustic and a credit to the skill of all these improv masters. It is one continuous recording with episodic track markers added manually, except for the tape flip between tracks 3 and 4 which is amazingly not really audible, so I did not do any editing or cross-fading. Other details of the recording are not known, except it was in January as part of the 'Music and Ideas of 1968' celebrations so possibly the anniversary in 1988. Noise from cassette and FM is there, but a lot of the audible noise is from Keith Rowe's radios that can be heard switching on/off especially at the beginning, so it doesn't matter much anyway. IMHO, this is some of the greatest music you will ever hear - Enjoy !!
