- Roy Buchanan was formerly believed to have participated in the 07.04.68 jam, but this is wrong. The guitarist in question is most likely Dave Woods, with Ed "Bugs" Gregory on bass, and possibly Glenway McTeer on drums.

Jimi Hendrix

Here is the final part of the sessions that produced “Electric Ladyland” (the final part to be completed, that is; the later sessions from June and August 1968 were previously compiled). This portion covers only 3 days of recording, but there’s a lot of material with numerous alternate mixes and a couple of nearly-complete session recordings. As usual, everything here is pitch-adjusted to match officially released tracks. Any phase error between channels was removed. Vinyl tracks were de-clicked by hand, and mono vinyl tracks were channel-averaged. Every effort was made to find the best-available copies of collectors’ sources for the unofficial material.

some notes on the individual tracks:

House Burning Down (3) is an alternate mix of the track with different panning.
House Burning Down (2) is the alternate mix from acetate. It’s in much better shape here than on most previous copies, with a lot of manual de-clicking having been done. There’s still a great deal of background noise remaining, but it’s more listenable now. Removing all the noise would likely result in removing all the music too.
House Burning Down (4), Gypsy Eyes (14), and Voodoo Child (SR) (90) are all simple fold-downs of the official stereo mixes. As with most other mono mixes of the ELL tracks, they aren’t studio remixes. The results are often odd-sounding as the stereo mixes weren’t intended to be reduced to mono. These were taken from the Brazilian 1-LP mono release of ELL, and are noisier than I’d like; hard to find in better condition though. They can always be generated in excellent quality from the stereo CD releases, but I wanted to have the original mono sources here.
The short alternate mono mix (1:08) of Gypsy Eyes is from the sampler that was available with an eBay listing from March 2008. It also has some different guitar than appears on the other mixes. Quality is poor; this track came from a lossy file, and there were messy static pops throughout. These were mostly removed but some little bits of noise remain due to the extended nature of the pops. There were also several cuts in the audio near the start; these are still there, although silent gaps have been added at the edit points to preserve the rhythm of the track.
3 Little Bears (8) was listed by Jimpress as an alternate mix of (1) with echo; however, the echo is the least interesting aspect of it. It appears to be the original track before final guitar overdubs, featuring what is probably the original drum track; all other mixes have Mitch’s replacement drum track. I believe the recently released 3rd edition of Ben Franklin mentions these differences also.
The other mixes of this track are all somewhat different, so they are all included. (4) has lead guitar nearly central in the mix. (5) is nearly mono, with vocal isolation for the first 4:16. (3) has the cowbell much more to the front.
The official mixes of this track, Polydor mix (1) and Reprise mix (2), are substantially different. (2) has a few vocals censored, but in fact the entire mix is different; it’s not just a case of removing a few vocal bits. The Polydor mix is much wider stereo, and the rhythm guitar is in different places in the two mixes. Also, (2) fades out whereas (1) comes to a sudden stop, but continues a second or two longer.
South Saturn Delta (2,7,9) add extensive overdubs to the original track (1), including guitar and horns, those overdubs having been recorded the following month. (9) uses different horn and guitar overdubs.
Cherokee Mist is available in several different mixes which aren't indexed separately by Jimpress. The edited mix (6:08) has a section in the middle removed, and has guitar tracks central and to the left, although the guitar to the left splits to both channels at times. The other two mixes are complete. The first of these is similar to the edited mix, but has somewhat louder drums and moves the central guitar part to the right channel. The other complete mix has guitar placement similar to the edited mix, but has drums mixed very loud and very up-front. There are also bursts of amplifier hum during the break between the first and second parts of this track (around the 4-min mark) that are not on the other two mixes.
There are probably other slightly different permutations of this track out there. I know of one that has some of the amplifier hum bursts, but not the loud drums. But it's edited in the middle and is essentially mono, so it's not included.
Finally, there is the very incomplete mix from Lifelines, that is similar to the complete mix with guitars left and right (although with the channels reversed) but has the drums dry, with no reverb added. The two short parts without voiceover are included here, since it's the only official outing. This track is surely destined for official release at some point.
Voodoo Chile (1-5,8) is here in slightly better quality than most previous outings. There are a couple of tape stops near the start of (2), which are not present in the following alternate mix (q.v.). Comparison to that uninterrupted mix shows that these cuts are too long; they were shortened here so that their duration equals the duration of the missing music.
An alternate mix of Voodoo Chile (2) is available from the "Echo Tape". Although missing the start, this lacks some of the cuts present in the other mix. It's also truly a different mix (aside from the added reverb) since the instruments are placed differently and their levels are quite different.
Voodoo Chile (7) is not included on this set. This only appeared on an old Living Legend bootleg from 1989. It’s described by both UV and Jimpress as an alternate mix with hardly any crowd noise. It turns out that it’s identical to the official mix; the only difference is that the start and end of the track are cut, which are the parts that contain most of the crowd noise. The remaining places in the song where the crowd comes up are the same as on the official mix. (The recently released 3rd edition of Ben Franklin has corrected the error by deleting this number.)
Voodoo Chile (12) is the official composite from :Blues. It consists of the first 2:00 from the “broken string” take (4), a short 0:25 vocal piece from the official version, and finally most of the last 6:50 of take (2). It fades out 0:24 before the end of (2).
Voodoo Chile (13) is the same composite as (12), but in a somewhat different mix, with instruments are in different positions. While (12) has guitar right and drums central, (13) has guitar central and drums right, and there's more reverb on (12). (13) also runs complete to the end of take (2) rather than fading early.
Another composite, Voodoo Chile (9), is not included in this set. It's a similar composite to (12) and (13) except that it lacks the short middle 0:25 portion from the official track. It consists of the first 2:08 of (4) and the last 6:43 of (2). The edit between the two parts is crude, and it’s likely that this is just an amateur effort. In addition, the mix is the same as that of the collector's session tape, so it's likely that it was made by just taking parts from that. Since there's nothing new, and it's probably not an official mix, it's not included here.
Voodoo Child (SR) (1-3, 5-16, 18-21) is the full circulating session in a dry mono mix, here in slightly better quality than most previous appearances. (17) is the official mix of (16) taken from “Lifelines”.
Finally, there are two tracks by Eire Apparent, taken in their straight mono mixes from the Buddah promo 45. These tracks were included in the TTG collection, and they are generally attributed to those sessions. However, evidence argues for them originating from the May Record Plant sessions. It's interesting to note that these two tracks are essentially mono on the Eire Apparent LP; some fake stereo effects are added, but they are not true stereo. If these tracks were all recorded at TTG, surely they would all appear in stereo mixes on the album.
A critical piece of evidence is more persuasive. This 45 has been found on a radio station playlist from September 1968. This would certainly rule out TTG as the source of these two tracks. What other dates are possible? Photos exist of Jimi and Mick Cox in the Record Plant studios in May 1968 (one of these appears in UniVibes). This makes May a likely date for the recording of these two tracks. This still doesn't explain why the cuts are only available in mono, but the mono does indicate a different history for these two songs and separates them from the other tracks on the album. It's also possible that other songs on the album were recorded earlier than TTG, but lacking evidence of this these are the only two that are included here.

March 26, 1998 is 30 years since the only Jimi show ever in Cleveland.

Jimi's only appearance in my hometown! Sadly I was only 11 and didn't go. There were two shows that night and the first was marked by a bomb scare. The crowds at both shows were rowdy and tore up Music Hall so bad that Jimi wasn't welcome back to Cleveland (robbing me of the chance to see him, as I certainly would have in 69 or 70!). I remember shortly afterward tearing an article about the show out of a Time magazine in the school library- it was titled 'Fireman, spare that guitar!' and written, I read later, by Joe Ezterhaus, Clevelander-turned Rolling Stone writer-turned big time screenwriter. Also read later that PR man Michael Goldstein was from my home 'burb of Shaker Heights and there was a description of Jimi tooling around Shaker in the Corvette he bought that day in Cleve- jeez, he was right there!

Anyway, the second show survives on tape. Not too bad sounding for the era but, as is typical, the vocals are buried on the loud songs. Some great shots survive from the shows and I can see that the PA stacks were a mere 2 Altec Voice of the Theater cabs (15" speaker and 1" horn) per side- I got more PA than that in my garage!! Near the beginning of the show Jimi says (I think) "Welcome to Cleveland"- one of the few times I can think of him referring to (or maybe, knowing) the town he's in during a show! Couple of musical notes:
* Opens with increasingly rare 'Sgt Pepper'. Only later recorded versions are 9 months later in Providence then twice in 1970 (Philly and IoW).
* Pretty slow 'Red House' and ever longer- over 11 minutes now (though the tape is a little slow). Middle part features a wah solo followed by the 'slapped' chordal bit into a couple of heavy handed verses.
* Sixth documented 'Spanish Castle Magic' still close to record at under 5 min.
* Great, and ever rare, 'Manic Depression', 3rd of 7 recorded live ones. Before playing it the crowd is yelling out requests and Jimi says "we want to play Stone Free but first we'll do Manic Depression", however after MD he says "we can only do 2 more so just pretend we did Stone Free" !!
* Before Wild Thing he uses the 'I'll take off my hat if you take off your pants" line as the crowd's been yelling about the damn hat since the third song! Wild Thing has a higher-than-usual # of quotes. Before starting the familiar chords he does that 'Leader of the Pack' line, then a few words (mentions the soldiers coming back with 'feedback guitars'), then a few bars of what sounds like 'Dear Mr Fantasy' (though contains hints of his later 'Bolero' progression)! Also, after the usual 'Strangers in the Night' quote he plays what I think is a Jeff Beck line from 'Shapes Of Things', though it might be something else (Cream?) that I can't quite put my finger on at the moment .

The tape continues for quite awhile after the show ends and at one point you hear a guy yell something like "whoa, better put your crash helmets on!" ??????....guess we'll never know.....

Cleveland Rocked,

The Jimi Hendrix Experience
Hollywood Bowl, Hollywood, California, USA
Saturday 14 September 1968

support acts: Eire Apparent, Soft Machine & Vanilla Fudge

first generation cassette from master
taper: unknown

The Jimi Hendrix Experience recording
In 2011 a 1st generation upgrade of the Hollywood Bowl recording surfaced. This was a TDK MA-X 90 metal tape received directly from the original taper circa 1988. The owner of the cassette could not recall the name of the taper so the master still remains to be found - if it still exists. Several transfers of the cassette were made and circulated during 2011, unfortunately these only used one channel of the 2 channel mono dub due to a defect in the cassette deck and ran 4% too fast. For this release a new 2 channel mono transfer was made, the recording pitch & phase corrected, tape flip overlap spliced together and drop-outs repaired when possible (by patching one channel with the other channel that had no problems). A large amount of clicks were removed (but only when it caused no loss of actual musical content), especially during the very noisy first 8 minutes of the recording. No eq or denoise was used. If you have a previous transfer of the 1st gen cassette and are completely happy with it there might be little reason to get this version. Everything possible was however done to assure this 2012 edition would be the best possible version of the Hollywood Bowl recording to replace the old ATM-0037 2nd gen tape so the perfectionists among you will enjoy this upgrade.

The Jimi Hendrix Experience tracklist
The cuts, tape wows and drop-outs were checked against a 2011 transfer, the old 2nd gen ATM disc and the 2lp bootleg set. All faults listed below were on all sources checked so presumably they are also on the master tape but that of course can't be verfied at the moment.

1 Radio promo
2 Intro (cut at 2.13, drop-outs at 3.16-21, cut at 3.22)
3 Call of the black panther / Are you experienced (audio drops out at 0.09-11 & 0.38-40, tape wow at 1.07, cut at 2.36, cut or drop-out at 3.20, tape wows at 3.27, 3.51 & 8.00)
4 Voodoo child (slight return) (tape wow at 5.58)
5 Red house (cut at 7.06, tape wow at 10.11)
6 Foxy lady
7 Fire
8 Hey Joe (tape wow at 4.58)
9 Sunshine of your love (drop-outs at 0.53-54, tape wows at 3.41, 4.05 & 4.55)
* master tape flip
10 I don't live today (start cut) (tape wows at 2.17 & 2.31)
11 Little wing (tape wow at 0.23)
12 Star spangled banner /
13 Purple haze

The KHJ radio promo
The promo spot that starts the disc is not an off-air recording but comes from a KHJ compilation reel of various promotional spots. Exact lineage is unknown but it probably is a 1st or 2nd generation copy of the original radio promo "master". The voice that you hear is that of KHJ dj Humble Harve who also does the opening introduction of the JHE set.

The Support Acts
There are also recordings of parts of the sets by Soft Machine and Vanilla Fudge. The 1st generation cassette however does not include these and the circulating versions are of much higher generation / lower audio quality than the Jimi Hendrix Experience set. Therefore these were not included as part of the Hollywood Bowl release proper but we have included them on a bonus disc that's available separately. The Soft Machine recording was taken from a compilation CDR titled "Soft Machine: American Tour - Summer 1968" and the Vanilla Fudge recording comes from a torrent where it was coupled with a 22 November 1969 recording from Hemisfair Arena in San Antonio. There is no lineage available for Soft Machine, Vanilla Fudge was listed as coming from a 3rd generation cassette. Both tapes very likely exist somewhere in better quality lower generation versions and the bonus disc in no way claims to be definitive or even best quality currently available. Some extranous clicks and digital errors were cleaned up from both tapes.

Interestingly neither support act tape has any of the cuts or speed problems that the JHE set has even though they are very likely to have been recorded by the same person since no other recordings of the JHE set circulate.
There are no recordings known to exist from any of the concerts that Eire Apparent played in 1968. There are some clues available as to what they might have played at the Hollywood Bowl, the book Eyewitness 1968 includes an 26 August 1968 concert review that reports the band played It's All Over Now, Baby Blue and Gloria. On the two available recordings from the January 1969 tour Eire Apparent is still playing Gloria but the Dylan number has changed to Highway 61 Revisited.
The Soft Machine recording from the Hollywood Bowl runs for 15 minutes and this could be most of their set, a 1 September 1968 review noted that the band performed for 20 minutes.
Vanilla Fudge seems to have been playing basically the same set each night. Based on September 1968 reviews reprinted in Eyewitness and the 9 September 1968 Portland recording, at Hollywood Bowl Vanilla Fudge probably played People Get Ready & You Keep Me Hangin' On and finished with the 20+ min Break Song. The Hollywood Bowl recording includes only the last number with a few minutes missing from the start.

Notes:
- 1st source of this show is the tape originally thought to be from the 2/V/1969 Detroit concert. This tape captures the first part of the show but misses the remainder.
That's yet another tape that has mostly circulated incomplete. Many sources end with the first minute of "Voodoo Chile (Slight Return)" (34i) followed by 3-minute portion of "Red House" (34i). Check Joel Brattin's article in UniVibes issue 28, p.27-32 (April 1998) about all Detroit recordings.

- Details about the 1st source::
The tape is a real mess! It's a mono recording, but somwhere during the analog copying many problems were introduced. Phase between channels had a large offset that wasn't constant (large enough that it must have been intentional, to give a fake stereo effect), so even when the average offset was corrected, some variations in phase remained that made the sound wobble back and forth.
The two channels have also been treated with different EQ, with the right channel more trebly and the the left channel more bassy. There was no feasible way to remove these problems (and additional ones described below) completely and combine the channels without losing sound quality, so the right channel of the recording was used, with some small patches from the other channel. Not knowing which channel (if either) has the more correct EQ, the average value was used and applied to the right channel.
The tape gets 1 minute into "Voodoo Child (Slight Return)" (34), then the audio cuts and jumps into the middle of "Red House" (34).
After "Red House" (34) reaches its end, there's another cut and we're back to "Voodoo Chile (Slight Return)" (34) to capture the end of the song.
Apparently what must have occurred is that the taper got to the end of the tape, but wanting to record some of the"Red House" (34), rewound the tape and recorded it over the part of previously taped "Voodoo Child (Slight Return)" (34). As the tape progresses past the start of "Voodoo Chile (Slight Return)" (34), the technical problems get worse. The pitch starts to droop substantially; this gets worse during "Red House" (34) (especially after a cut in the song at around 3-minute mark). By the end of the tape, it is an unbelievable (and totally unlistenable) 75% slow. Since this pitch slowdown gets worse during the running of this source, but the original tape has a later-recorded song ("Red House" (34) before the end of "Voodoo Chile (Slight Return)" (34), it's clear that the slowdown occurred during the transfer stage (!!!) and was not on the master. Also during this last part of the tape, there are speaking voices (recorded at different speed, very high-pitched) overlaid on the music, mostly in the left channel (another reason for using the right channel).
When slowed down, one of these can be heard to say "put that down and get your ass in here!". Because of this it seems likely that an early transfer was done by microphone rather than by cable (!!). There are assorted other sounds, wobbling in the volume, dropouts galore, and one channel quits altogether at the end of the tape.
It's really a total mess. The gigantic speed slowdown is probably the reason that the end of the tape isn't included on most transfers. But it's valuable, since neither "Voodoo Child (Slight Return)" (34) nor the end of "Red House" (34) are included on the 2nd (Foley) source.
It's probably safe to assume that the master would have been in substantially better shape than this tape (it must have been an excellent sounding tape in fact) and that most of the technical problems (and deliberate alterations) came in at later stages, but sadly the master may no longer exist. A variable pitch correction was used to fix the speed at the end. "Red House" (34) was removed and placed after the two parts of "Voodoo Chile (Slight Return)" (34), to restore the actual recording order. Some EQ was applied to two off-speed tracks because the original EQ on these two was substantially different from the rest of the tape, maybe some effect of the pitch sag. Sudden volume changes (some of these apparently not on the master) were corrected. It is still a rough tape, but it sounds a lot better now. At least a majority of the technical problems have been improved. Other than removal of one several second long portion of a tape where high-pitched voices are all that's heard, this is the complete source and includes about 3 minutes of "Voodoo Child (Slight Return)" (34) and 2 minutes of "Red House" (34) that aren't on most other transfers.

- Details about the 2nd source:
The 2nd source is the tape recorded by Randy Foley.
It skips some songs during the concert but captures the later part of the show. Most of the copies of this tape (aka. The "Detroit Fire" Tape) have been circulated without "I Don't Live Today" (23), which was recorded but left off of those transfers. The source used here is probably the best available, and is complete. It is a digital copy of a transfer of the master onto videotape. Randy made a videotape transfer and a handful of cassette transfers, all 1st gen from the master. The master has since been sold to Experience Hendrix, and apparently no direct digital transfer of the master was made before the sale.
In Foley's article in UniVibes, he implies that a digital transfer from the master was done, but that was probably an incomplete recollection. Very little has been done to this source. The CDR has index gaps (from Randy's comments it appears that his original digital transfer onto CDR has these too). These were removed. Tape speed sounds right so pitch wasn't altered.

- A 1st & 2nd Source composite is available on ATM-143
"Tomorrow We'll Do Our Last Gig In The States".

- A Stereo effect mix (merge) of
"Fire" (41)
"I Don't Live Today" (23)
"Sunshine Of Your Love" (13)
"Red House"(34i)
is available on the Collector's Disc "Merge Vol.4".

Jimi Hendrix Friday, April 18, 1969 North Hall, Ellis Auditorium Amphitheatre, Memphis, TN 2nd show 1 Fire 2 I Don't Live Today 3 Hear My Train A Comin' 4 Sunshine Of Your Love# 5 Stone Free# 6 Foxy Lady 7 Star Spangled Banner 8 Purple Haze > Voodoo Child (slight return) Master cassette -> CDR -> FLAC7 From Chris Dixon's 30th Anniversary Series © C S Dixon 18 April 1999 marks 30 years since the 1969 Experience show at Ellis Auditorium Amphitheater in Memphis, Tennessee, the 3rd date of the Exp's last tour. There were two shows this night with the second surviving on tape. The tape sounds somewhat distant but has a fairly good balance with voice and guitar loudest and drums on the low side (pics show Mitch returning to his black Ludwig kit after a 'fling' with a flashy gold sparkle kit in Philly). Tape features quite a bit of nearby audience chatter, but I just call that 'audio verite'. One voice early on is heard to exclaim "...he cut off all his hair!..". Not quite true (paints a picture though, eh?) but Jimi's hair was considerably shorter around this time. Apparently the band were quite late for the shows. The local paper gave a less than glowing review but our standards are a little different so let's have a look... (Setlist) Fire; I Don't Live Today; Hear My Train; Sunshine of Your Love; Stone Free; Foxy Lady; Star Spangled Banner; Purple Haze; Voodoo Child (SR) ¥ 'IDLT' gets a very short first solo but a slightly extended feedback interlude before the final 'speed up' section. Jimi breaks it down to some muted strumming and around 6:00 then builds back up for some more soloing. After the song, we hear someone yell "Turn that damn git-tar DOWN!" with the exact same inflection as Jimi's overdubbed aside on ELL's 'Voodoo Chile' jam! ¥ Jimi's spoken intro to 'Hear My Train' is interspersed with some nice off-the-cuff riffs. One of the earliest examples of Jimi singing "Well, I hear my train a coming..." at the very beginning of the song. After a particularly fast line in the first solo you hear someone break out laughing....hey, I know the feeling! The long first solo breaks down around 5:30 and we get some nice guitar/voice unison 'scatting'. Near the end he repeats the title vocal line more times than usual, finally substituting the words "I hear my freedom coming", a line familiar from a jam of the same name from the TTG sessions. ¥ Jimi starts the 'SOYL' solo by imitating Clapton's original but Noel doesn't go to the '4' chord so Jimi pulls back to some muted strumming and we get a bass solo, then the by-now familiar build up. During the final verse the tape fades out.... ¥ ...and fades in on the opening verse of 'Stone Free'! Anyone's guess as to what's missing between the two. Probably not too much as the tape is about right for a complete concert (Unless it's missing from the tape, this is a rare night with no 'Red House'). Anyway, SF extremely short this night after the 10+ minute version from the previous show (only a couple of minutes though, again, the opening is missing). Relatively seldom performed, we only have 3 more documented Experience versions after this. ¥ In the lull before 'SSB' we hear a voice call for 'Crosstown Traffic' (wishful thinking - sadly, he never played it live). Jimi pumps the wah steadily early in SSB, sounding almost like the pulsing Univibe on the familiar Woodstock version. He plays the "...rockets red glare, bombs bursting through air..." line then starts the "Gave truth through the night..." line but, realizing he's forgotten to do the 'bombs bursting' sound effects, he goes back for a bit of same before starting over on the "Gave truth.." line! ¥ VC(SR) now firmly established as a set closer, as it (or, occasionally, Purple Haze) will close virtually every show from here on out. A unique 'hammer on' riff near the end and finishes it off with a little dental work! Chris Gary Serkin recorded this performance on a portable cassette recorder, one of the first on the market. He and friends drove from Nashville to see this show, and waited in line for a while as the fi
rst show of the night went longer than expected. Gary says at one point he left his cassette recorder on a railing while waiting in line to enter, and only remembered it right as his group got close to the entrance, when he rapidly sprinted back and luckily found it right where he had left it. They sat in row six in the middle. Gary is one of Jimi's fans from way way back - he claims to have seen "Shotgun" on Night Train when it aired in Nashville in 1965, and he swears the weirdo guitar player in the background was all he could watch. He had all the albums and knew that a Jimi Hendrix concert was not something for which he would need to open the microphones up all the way for, which avoids the overdriven sound often found on close-up Jimi audience tapes. That's Gary you hear talking from time to time in the show - hey, he was a teenager and had no idea this recording would be circulating worldwide for decades to come. He's the one who says "He cut off all his hair" and requests "Crosstown Traffic". His friend from high school is the other loud mouth who cuts in from time to time. Gary said at one point during I Don't Live Today (sounds like about 3:00 in) Jimi took his guitar and held it by the neck in his right hand and just waved it around the stage, swooping and diving, all the while making those wonderful sounds. The audience went crazy. Gary also says later on that he had to flip the tape, so after Sunshine Of Your Love he stopped and since it was quiet he decided to see how the recording was going, so he hit rewind for a second then turned up the volume and hit play... but he was unprepared for just how loud it would be, so right from the sixth row after SOYL the whole crowd around him, and who knows maybe even Jimi, could hear a half-second of the end of it play back again! Whoops!! But all went well and the tape survives. Gary said he didn't make himself a personal backup tape until 1980 or so, but he played the master regularly and would spin copies for anyone who asked, which got to be quite a few people. So the master tape got quite a bit of use. And he said he did not attend the Memphis 1970 show, although some friends did and gave it negative reviews. He never mentioned it to me, but apparently he or a friend took a camera as well, because there's a picture on this page: http://www.wtv-zone.com/ruexperienced/gallery5/thumb13.html Another here: http://www.wtv-zone.com/ruexperienced/gallery3/thumb9.html Two of Noel on this one: http://www.wtv-zone.com/ruexperienced/images/memory_noel.html And if you Google him you'll find info about the band he played in, the Gypsy Sun Experience. This is no ordinary Hendrix tribute band - Gary is actually playing with Mitch Mitchell on drums and Billy Cox on bass! As far as I know, however, this project only resulted in two live appearances, but you gotta admit, that's still pretty f'n cool. Especially since Memphis is the show where Billy was backstage after receiving an invitation from Jimi to check out the show and discuss future band possibilities... Here's a picture of Gary and Billy playing together: http://www.wtv-zone.com/ruexperienced/visitors/ItchycooPark.jpg If anyone's interested, I do have the first GSE show, 7/24/99 Nashville. It's one long audio file, 25-30 minutes, an audience recording from a noisy club. They play five songs, only two Jimi ones though, and there was another guitarist who was actually fronting the band that night named Tendure, which Gary explained later was the result of a lot of record company BS; the guy was no Jimi buff and no real axe-man either, so the recording is pretty much only of interest to people who were there. Heck, -I- was there, and I don't listen to it very often. But I did get the word that the band was fine with audience tapes, so I thought I'd offer and see if there's any interest in that one. You do get to hear Billy on lead vocals - he's got kind of a BB King-ish singing voice - and Mitch gives a brief promo for his drum techs at the end. There used to be a Mitch Mitchell website with that la
st bit on MP3, but it appears to have been taken offline...

notes:
- This tape has no serious/notable speed troubles. The tape (presumably the master and not just this dub) has some sudden drastic volume changes, and the whole thing is hissy. The sound is not too murky or distant. A lot of hiss and a some bass rumbling noise, but otherwise it's reasonably clear and all instruments can be heard most of the time. The distortion is not too bad....less than the usual. Apart from the occasional sudden volume changes the tape is fairly free of dropouts. Not many crackles. A few mic handling noises. There doesn't seem to be any any real signal above ~9 kHz. The tape runs nearly complete, just a few cuts.
- Source walkthrough: Intro {starts pre-song, cutting in as Mitch is testing the drums. The level drops a couple seconds after the tape starts. Some microphone handling noises, and a few crackles}, "Fire" (67), "Room Full of Mirrors" (14), "Hear My Train A Comin'" (40) {level suddenly rises about a minute into the song}, "Lover Man" (28) {level suddenly changes a few times a minut or so into to the song, staying low for the remainder of the song}, "Red House" (63), {cut; Seems to be a cut or quick microphone unplug & plug-in after the end and before the next song. Levels seem to he higher after this cut}, "Message to Love" (28) {the start of this song is the loudest part so far on tape apart from the very brief drum beats at the very start before "Fire" (67). The level drops suddenly a minute or so into the song}, {cut; some tuneup and spoken intro seem to be missing}, "Ezy Rider" (19) {the level jumps up a minute or so into the song, and bounce up and down a couple times at approx. 2:00}, {cut with the taper apparently doing a "one two three testing" check, with just "one" surviving on the tape}, "Machine Gun" (16) {the very start is missing}, "Start Spangled Banner" (32), "Foxy Lady" (79), "Voodoo Child (Slight Return)" (68), "Purple Haze" (88) {level drops a minute or so into the song (right channel only). Tape ends after the applause dies down at after end of the song}.
- The Existence of the Ketchum Source had been unknown to the general public as well as to hardcore collectors until it's rediscovery and subsequent release on this CD in 2001.

Background
This recording was taped by Gerard Daily, a resident of San Antonio. He recorded many concert tapes in the San Antonio area from 1969 through the summer of 1970. That autumn he moved to Fort Worth to attend TCU; he didn't have a car at school and was stuck on campus, so his concert taping stopped.

The best heritage of this recording previously circulating to collectors seems to have been 2nd generation (used for ATM-0127), although that lineage is uncertain. Adding to the uncertainty, other copies with undocumented lineage seem to have better sound. The master sounds substantially better than any of those - partly because of the generation difference, but also because many previous copies seem to have been processed in some way, resulting in a loss of sound quality.

This 88-minute recording also captures the opening act, Country Funk. They seem to be appreciated even today, although they never achieved much fame during the group's lifetime. They released one self-titled album in 1970 and recorded tracks for a second album that wasn't released until 40 years later. The group's name is a bit misleading; their music and sound are reminiscent of Buffalo Springfield.

Though Billy Cox had replaced Noel Redding on bass the band was still most of the time being officially billed as the Jimi Hendrix Experience (hence Gerard's writing on the cassette label). Hendrix himself however doesn't seem to have called the band the Experience so apart from his comment about calling the tour the Cry of Love it's not really known what he himself thought the name of the band was. Some may prefer calling it the Jimi Hendrix Experience, some the Cry of Love band, for this set just "Jimi Hendrix" was used.

Confusion has been generated over the years regarding the name of the venue. The Hendrix concert flyers advertised it as being held at the "Hemisphere Arena" (a spelling mistake still common to this day) while some tickets had "San Antonio Convention Center" printed on them. The correct location and spelling is "HemisFair Arena".

Transfer
In the Spring of 2011, Gerard was kind enough to send his master cassettes for digital transfer. The concert was recorded on two cassette tapes with a Toshiba portable cassette desk with an external microphone. The first was a 120-minute tape, with a San Antonio 7 March 1970 recording of the Jefferson Airplane on Side 1 (also in circulation). The recording of Country Funk and the first part of the Hendrix show (through "Red House") were on Side 2 of this tape. The second cassette, a C-60, captured the portion of the concert from "Message to Love" through "Purple Haze" on Side 1, with the last song "Voodoo Child (Slight Return)" on Side 2.

Although this is an upgrade over previous copies, there are still some difficulties with the audio, including bits of distortion during loud passages on the C-120 tape (probably caused by the much thinner tape), but these are on the master. "Message to Love," which begins the recording on the second cassette, is noticeably muddier than the rest of the recording; the microphone may have been obscured for some reason during this song. But overall, the clarity is much better than previous copies, making the recording much more listenable. Two transfers of the tape were made using different equipment and these were compared to each other so any problems with the transfer process were ruled out, all drop-outs or noises are on the master itself. No eq or denoise was applied.

Art
Cover art is available in two versions: art for a 2 cdr set with the support act Country Funk included and another version for a single disc of just the Hendrix segment of the tape. Those who wish to burn a 2cdr set should put the disc split between tracks 112 and 201, for burning just one cdr of the Hendrix segment choose tracks 107-112 and 201-207.

Gerard kept clippings related to the concert, scans of color photocopies of these are also included.

This set is an uprade of ATM-0123/24 The Berkeley Concerts, now presenting the entire show in continuous uniform soundboard quality ("Star spangled banner" & "Purple haze" were completely missing from the older versions of the soundboard tape and the ATM discs as well as the start of both "Foxy lady" & "Freedom") and without the distortion audible on the previous ATM release.

The files are numbered from 1 to 13. In order to burn a 2 cdr set tracks numbered 1-6 should be burned on disc 1 and tracks 7-13 on disc 2.

Disc 1
1 Intro (cut at 2.56)
2 Fire
3 Johnny B Goode
4 Getting my heart back together
5 Foxy lady
6 Machine gun

Disc 2
1 Freedom
2 Red house
3 Message to love
4 Ezy ryder
5 Star spangled banner
6 Purple haze
7 Voodoo child (slight return)

It seems that all copies of the Berkeley soundboard tapes originated from Bob Terry. The Cooper Owen auction listings for the Bob Terry tapes include three reels with the 2nd part of the concert. It is however probable that Terry also had similar reels for the 1st half, for some reason omitted from the auction (like many other tapes Terry had), so very likely all of his Berkeley multitrack mixdowns were on 15 ips 10" Ampex reels or similar studio quality tapes.

It seems that Bob Terry circulated several different edits of his Berkeley tapes, this is why there are at least 3 different versions of the first show going around all originating from the same reels but with different cuts and missing tracks. The basis of this set was a low generation cassette originally received from Bob Terry that came into circulation in 2011. Unlike previous versions this cassette came directly from Terry and includes all of the music but has some cuts between songs.

This set uses a new transfer of that cassette (done on different equipment than the transfer circulated in 2011) as the main source with cuts between the tracks, some drop-outs, noises and the end of Voodoo child (slight return) patched with the dub/edit of the tape that was used for the previous ATM release 0123/24. The intro was taken from a third dub/edit (taken from a previous multi source composite version of the concert) with one cut patched with the main source.

There's only one cut remaining and that occurs pre-concert before Jimi enters the stage. It's unknown whether this is also present on the multitrack tapes but as the other edits on the various versions of the tape were "clean" and the sole remaining cut clearly has the tape speeding up after the cut. So it's quite likely that the cut was introduced by different equipment than the other cuts and thus could well be on the master tapes, possibly the multitrack deck was halted when the start of the actual concert was delayed.

There's no way to be sure if Bob Terry used his original reels to dub the cassette used as the main source here, it's also quite possible that he dubbed from a safety copy. So the lineage of the main source would read something like this:
Master (multitrack) > 15ips mixdown reel (> reel?) > cassette > wav

The exact lineage of the patch sources is unknown.

No eq was applied to the main source, it was necessary to invert channels and apply eq to the patches in order to make seamless repairs but some variation remains. Apart from the usual differences in hiss levels there were slight differences in the stereo image between the tapes, some tapes had wider stereo than others even though the actual mix of the instruments appeared to be the same. This difference was either introduced deliberately or is down to the copying process, either way some repairs/patches are not 100% inaudible because of this.

making this by far the best version of the Copenhagen show available.

Disc 1 ("Ezy Rider" (29)), and a fade-in during the same Audience noises before the first track on Disc 2 ("Freedom" (26)).
On version 2 there are no such fade-ins or fade-outs. (The timings 47:04 / 44:28 are for the version with fades.)
