Peter Gabriel : The Lostbrook Tape Series - Volume 12

I didn’t have a ticket to this concert, but I received an offer I couldn’t refuse – a first row seat directly in front of Peter Gabriel’s piano for his first gig as a solo artist! It was a privilege to witness this historic event from such a location.
We already knew that Genesis could survive without Gabriel, and all doubts about Peter were erased when he released his first solo album eight days before this concert. The “visible’ band that included Larry Fast, Steve Hunter, and Tony Levin was already first class, but the addition of Robert Fripp, even though he was hidden behind the stage, was a prog fan’s dream. Gabriel took to the stage wearing a simple sweat suit, sat down at the piano in front of me, and played the opening chords of “Here Comes the Flood.”
Near the end of the first verse, Fripp’s signature sound appeared out of nowhere, and the crowd roared in approval as it welcomed back not one, but two progressive rock icons. If I craned my neck at just the right angle, I could see Fripp behind the amplifiers, and even convinced myself that he was tilting his head back at me. I thought the concert was spectacular, but just before “Down the Dolce Vita,” Gabriel declared, “It’s been a total zero.” I think he was unhappy with a few things: a tape machine that malfunctioned, a slip-up when he introduced “Humdrum” instead of “Why Don’t We”, and the introduction of “Ain’t that Peculiar” as “Ain’t it Peculiar.” He may have also been upset with the relentless calls for Genesis songs. I thought I detected a little extra anger in the Rael character, especially when he hurled the mic stand across the stage. In my opinion, Peter didn’t need to be concerned. His performances didn’t just get better over the years. They improved exponentially.

Tapers Story:

I first became enchanted by live performances after talking my way into the taping of Dick Cavett’s Woodstock Show on August 18, 1969 at WABC studios in New York. This was quite an accomplishment for an eleven-year-old without a ticket. My first major concert was The Rolling Stones at Madison Square Garden on July 25, 1972. I was so impressed with the enormity of that event that I jumped at the chance to acquire some of the vinyl bootlegs from the Exiles on Main Street tour. These recordings surely planted a seed in my mind, but unfortunately, I waited over 25 concerts before attempting my first recording in late 1975. Over the next ten years, I recorded approximately 125 concerts in the New York City area. In 1985, I moved to Virginia and recorded sporadically, accumulating a few dozen shows in the Washington DC area over the next 15 years.

My motive for taping has always been selfish. I simply wanted to enjoy the performances over and over again. I didn’t realize that I was recording both musical and personal history or that I was witnessing the high-water mark of progressive music. I thought it would last forever, but in the back of my mind, I must have known that I had something special. With one or two exceptions that I later regretted, I refused to trade tapes. Very few friends were ever given copies. I have never considered selling them – I have too much respect for the artists. I protected my tapes for decades, never knowing what to do with them as they sat dormant on a shelf. In 2010, I found the time to make digital transfers of my tapes and rediscovered the amazing moments I had recorded. I also found an answer: I needed to get these tapes to my friends that were with me, whose history I had also captured, and to others who would appreciate this collection.

My equipment was low-tech but yielded surprisingly good results. Almost all of my recordings prior to 1989 were made with the built-in condenser mic on a Sanyo desktop cassette recorder (model unknown).
When the unit began to fail in 1977, I replaced it with what I thought was a better recorder, but the tapes were distorted. I quickly purchased a new Sanyo that was identical to my first and never again attempted an upgrade. In 1989, I bought a smaller, Walkman-type unit – a Panasonic RX-SR29, which performed nicely with its condenser mic. I was never interested in producing soundboard-quality tapes, and was almost always happy with my “souvenirs.” I used TDK tapes initially, then Maxell.

Recording a concert was always an adventure. Through trial and error, I arrived at the following procedure:
To get past the ticket-takers, I wore loose pants and stuffed the recorder down the front where the odds of being frisked were minimal. I wore a loose t-shirt or sweatshirt to cover the “bulge” and held my breath. The dead batteries and cheap tape I kept in the recorder were occasionally confiscated, but my friends were already inside with the real supplies. Once inside, I would meet my friends and exchange the batteries and tape. We had excellent seats for many concerts, but that put us in close proximity to ushers and stage security. We needed to be in a constant state of vigilance, and we were also busy with the timing of the tape-flips. I would occasionally take photographs with a cheap camera, which gave me additional equipment to juggle. Without fail, someone in my row would be in the wrong seat, and an usher would have to sort it out. It was all I could do to keep the recorder hidden without covering the microphone. It was always chaotic, but the reward was great as we listened to the concert again on the way home.

In mid-February 2014, "metro_cubo" shared a variety of sources of this famous Peter Gabriel show, several of which are still on the tracker as of this writing (March 2014). This inspired the JEMS team to pull out and digitize an uncirculated master reel from their (apparently bottomless) archives, and they asked me to see what I could do with it. I was happy to contribute what I could; this radio broadcast was widely bootlegged in the 1980s and among the first bootleg LPs I ever bought. The quality doesn't really hold up to the standards of modern FM broadcasts, but I have an attachment to it because I played it to death while I was growing up, and it remains one of my favorite solo Peter Gabriel shows.
The back-story, for those who don't know it -- this show took place roughly a month into Peter's first solo tour; he played two nights (4/9-4/10) at the Roxy in Los Angeles, with two performances each night. This recording captures the early show on the second night, carried live on various radio stations around the United States. According to the DJ chatter, this marks the first attempt at a live nationwide simulcast of a concert performance. You'll hear during the encore break (d2t8) a partial listing of the stations who carried the performance as it happened; it must have been quite a breakthrough to do this in real-time in the 1970s.
Given how closely Peter was associated with Genesis, it's interesting that even on his first tour he chose to focus almost entirely on material from his only solo album, with only one track ("Back in NYC") from his Genesis catalog. The 80-minute set was filled out with covers (Marvin Gaye's "Ain't That Peculiar" and the Kinks' "All Day and All Of The Night") and even an unreleased track ("A Song Without Words," which later became "Indigo"). Listening to this show makes one appreciate what a strong album his debut release was -- there is literally not a weak song in the set.
The performance, like every other show I've heard from this tour, was fantastic, augmented with a top-notch band that featured Robert Fripp (performing under the pseudonym "Dusty Rhodes," who according to legend remained entirely behind a curtain for the whole show). If you don't have any of the multiple releases of this concert (or for that matter, anything from this tour), it's worth the download.
In terms of the recording, it is very good given the era -- but not perfect. The vocals distort a bit during the louder portions, and the mix is kind of shaky in points. Furthermore, there was a fair amount of hiss in this recording (and probably evident in the broadcast itself, given that this source is a master reel that has probably not been played much). The tweaks I made in Audio Cleaning Lab removed the majority of the hiss and surprisingly brought out nuances in the guitars and keyboard; the vocals are still too low for my liking, but overall this is a very enjoyable recording of a great concert.
As noted above, there were two dropouts on this reel which have been patched from an alternate KMET broadcast source that is still on the tracker. I provided a sample of one of them ("Waiting For The Big One") which shows the improvement in quality for this source compared to the version already in circulation.
I'm sure there are dozens of versions of this broadcast in circulation; I can't say by any means that this is "definitive," but am confident that this will compare favorably with most.

I don't know if this recording circulated before but this is the first upload from my master.
I used a big Sony cassette recorder (can't remember what kind of "TC" it was) with his stereo mic.
The recording was made from a distant spot, drowned into a big crowd, and you can judge the quality with the samples.

The show finished late at night and the trains traffic was over.
We had to sleep a bit on the La Courneuve station's floor, waiting for the dawn and the trains; finally, not a bad memory.

Cassette - Marantz SD4051 deck - Zoom H4 - SD card on PC - Audacity (slight EQ, volume, tracks) - FLAC 8 (TLH).

The band is introduced on N° 13 (Phil Collins on percussions).

Six Tracks.

I've been going crazy trying to figure out the story behind this tape. Ebubier posted a copy of it and since I was the guy who taped it, I'll post this upgrade. This was probably at Irving Plaza, the date was definitely Dec 2 1978. Well, part of it was late enough to actually be Dec 3rd - 2am or later, but that isn't how these things are done. As you can likely hear, we were in no condition to know what time it was. A word to the up and coming tapers: Don't take quaaludes and get caught on tape.

Some sites (and my tape) say the location was Club 57 but the promoters of Club 57 sometimes held the actual shows at Irving Plaza. My database says Irving Plaza. I think that is the case here.

I thought that it was either a Fripp show or a Blondie show, and that the other showed up to play, but I don't have tapes of those gigs and I would if that was the case. But having dug through the database, I do have a B52s show from that date at Irving Plaza. I think what happened was that the opening band was Fripp, Steding, Harry, and Stein. Having noticed that Ms. Harry was playing drums, I turned the tape on. And so, the first three tracks are from FHSS opening for the B52's.

I was getting ready to upload this and then noticed that there was another entry for Fripp from this date, and that turned out to be really funny. We had heard that Fripp was going to play, and I don't think that we noticed that he was playing as the opening act. We were very stoned. So, after the show ended and most folks had left, we were standing around waiting to see if anything was going to happen. The PA had already been turned off.

So, there we were, a small crowd of folks standing right in front of the stage, and Fripp comes out. Near the beginning of track-4, listen carefully and you'll hear Fripp ask for a barstool. And I'm the guy who says "Barstool for Mr. Fripp". So tracks 4-6 are Fripp "late" show.

I burned it with a two second pause at the start of track-4 since it really is a different part of the show, perhaps you should do the same.

Enjoy the gig. The quality is really pretty good. Very good for the "late" show. I'd bet that it was taped on a little Sony TC55 not ten feet from Fripp on his barstool.

JEMS is pleased to continue a series of historic recordings made by our longtime friend and diehard music collector RG. He was on the scene in LA as a teenager, began recording shows in 1977 and continued on well into the 2000s. Our series will focus on tapes he made between 1977 and 1987.

What sort of music was he into? Well, one simple way to put it is KROQ music, meaning the bands that LA’s “world famous” new wave radio station was playing were the bands he saw and recorded. First wave if you will, with forays into indie and punk(ish) artists. The early years are dominated by UK artists breaking in the US. Over time his work expands to US bands in the second wave. Later on he caught The Smiths, R.E.M., Hüsker Dü, The Replacements and many more.
RG used good, not Millard-level recording gear, which means his tapes are mostly solid and listenable, with the occasional very good one and also sorta crappy one. What makes his tapes compelling is that RG was recording in a particularly vital window of time. In many instances these were the first or second times these acts played Los Angeles. Some never did proper US tours, only playing select dates in key markets like LA or NYC. Also, for many of these gigs, RG was the only taper. He grabbed a few local radio broadcasts along the way, too.
Because these shows were almost exclusively at clubs like The Whisky and The Roxy, the sets are generally short, 45 to 60 minutes because that's what you did at The Whisky. On occasion, RG would copy his own masters to save tape and we have done our best to distinguish what’s a true master and what’s a first generation copy. If there’s a doubt, we will note it. Regardless, the series will offer the lowest generation copies available of his recordings, digitized directly for the first time from RG’s tapes which had been stored in boxes for the last 15+ years.
Volume 23 is something a little different and quite fascinating.
In 1979, legendary King Crimson founder and experimental guitar pioneer Robert Fripp played a series of small shows showcasing what he called Frippertronics, in which he played along with two Revox reel to reel machines to create a time delay, looping sound on sound with each pass to create new, experimental layers of guitar on the fly.
The LA date took place at the famed Sunset Blvd. location of Tower Records. The performance follows the same basic format as other Frippertronics shows written about on the web, with Fripp explaining the process and waxing on about the nature of live music, recorded music, improvisation, musician-fan dynamics and other idiosyncratic delights as only he can. Fripp then demonstrates the process by playing several improvisations.
RG's recording captures Fripp's "lecture" and the guitar explanations in clear quality, providing a real "you are there" experience. Samples provided.
On the ProgArchives.com message boards, member Larree wrote about being at this exact show:
I will never forget standing right next to Fripp as he lectured some guy about taking pictures. He told the guy he should be making a sound recording of his demonstration instead of taking pictures! Fripp [told him] he was witnessing music history and all he was going to have to remember it by was a lousy photograph. I almost wet my f**king pants I was laughing so hard!"
For the notoriously anti-taping Fripp, that's an unexpected comment, and all the more amusing because RG was doing just that. The Tower Records San Diego Frippertronics show spurred a lot of downloads and comments. Hopefully this one will, too.
We’re grateful to RG for letting JEMS dig through his tape boxes and pull out the assets for this series. He witnessed amazing LA music history. As a Frippertronics recording you can't get much better. This came from a visit Fripp made to KSAN FM radio in 'Frisco,the day after his Tower Records appearance in Hollywood, and recorded these four tracks for the Phil Charles Show later in the night.
The context for these performances is slightly different, as they were intended for broadcast, probably only once, and not part of a live performance with an audience. He often spoke of the 'Vampiric' relationship between audience and performer.Something which is altered drastically on record and on radio.These tracks fall somewhere between live and studio,and musically are some of the best recorded versions of Frippertronics I've heard.It's just missing Roberts between track banter.

This is a high quality audience recording from Robert Fripp's "Small, Mobile, Intelligent Unit" Frippertronics tour at Tower Records, Hollywood, on July 27th 1979. Despite him specifically asking the audience not to record any of the music.
I do like the idea of something happening just once, then left to disappear and mutate in the memories of the persons present at the time.To eventually die altogether with the ultimate demise of the beholder. Some things should never be repeated or reanimated, and allowed to live their natural lifespan; like improvised music.Which is designed for a specific time and place and should be remembered as a total experience that lived briefly and died,like a sickly child. To reproduce it on a tape and play it back in your living room out of the context in which it was made,changes it completely.
So having said that, here's your chance to change the context and experience some classic Frippertronics in your own living room.Much to the disgust of Mr Fripp,who has successfully clamped down on any being easily available on the net or anywhere else for that matter.....so grab it while you can.
If you don't know what "Frippertronics" is, uncle Bob himself will explain it for you on track 2,interlaced with his mannered dry wit.

Got this tape in a trade in 1981 and transfered it to CDR 2000.
Very good(-) quality,listen to MP 3 samples,I love this early 1981 shows because the band sounds very fresh and they played with really fire in their ...
I think that the first track "Discipline" is missing.This is not a perfect tape,cuts in applause and some mic noise or tape distortion can be heard,not much but the quality of the mucic is worth the downloading.

Sound:
Overall sound quality: A/A-

The first minute or so contains minor sound adjustments.
Occasional minimal crunch.
A typically raucus New York audience chatting through the soundscapes and whooping during the silences, despite calls for quiet.
For the most part though, the music drowns out the crowd.
The performance is spectacular.
I lost interest in KC after the 1970s, but enjoyed Fripp's work with the LOG and the Projekcts.
It was a treat to see him really play the guitar again.

Ade was not allowed to play because of flu, so the rest of them
formed the ProjeKct 3 and played instead.
Followed by the Q and A session.I think,it`s a very good and rare
performance of P3,listen to MP3 sample.

played in the first incarnation of P3.

Arguably one of the most anticipated downloads on DGMlive, time and space seem to be a movable feast on this the last date of the Soundscapes Do Dixie tour. Playing in a venue where Chuck Berry struts his stuff on a monthly basis, Fripp’s past and present coalescence into an event and performance which he describes as possessing “resonance.”
Having a good crowd must’ve been something to do with it. “Probably the best audience of the tour: generous, supportive, attentive. Even, with a noticeable proportion of female women lady persons present” recorded Robert in his diary.
Time Stands Still and At The End Of Time have a sombre, towering presence here but it’s the surprising inclusion of the guitar theme from Starless, contained in the vignette Starlight I, that raised eyebrows and caused jaws to drop.
Included in the set in an off the cuff moment following a request (with accompanying cash bribe) from the floor, Fripp later developed the theme on the expansive and truly beautiful Starlight II.
If you were there then count yourself lucky as being in the right place at the right time; nothing can beat hearing this stuff as it hit the air. The rest of us will have to make do with the consolation of this download.

To be honest: I've never been a big fan of King Crimson, and if there's something close to my liking then it's the music of their first phase. Most of their songs are to me what we call
here in Germany "zu frickelig" and somehow I don't like the hectic athmosphere compared to my favourite progressive rock band VAN DER GRAAF GENERATOR.
Anyway, here's a great sounding capture of THE CRIMSON PROJEKCTs show in Oslo, and as I know that dear Lars likes them a lot, there's simply no chance for me to let this shelved away
in the outskirts of my harddrive. Please forgive me, if I didn't manage to get a proper setlist, but I know there are some experts out there, who can easily do one.
