as performed by an unidentified string trio in Germany, supposedly at an event on the occasion of La Monte Young's 49th birthday
"A revolution in Twentieth Century music occurred in 1958, when La Monte Young wrote the Trio for Strings. This serial piece, with its silences and long tones, paved the way for music based on tonality, drone and infinite time spans, brushing aside elaborate formal development in favor of the contempltion of pure sound."

Forty-Two for Henry Flynt
by La Monte Young performed by Peter Winkler (gong) at the Third Annual Festival of the Avant Garde in San Francisco, 1965 (1965)
This audio is available in streaming format
La Monte Young is an American composer living in New York, where he is associated with the group of composers who have derived a good deal of their impetus from the music and personality of John Cage. He was a student at the University of California, where much of his early music was performed in the late 1950Âs. Since that time he has gone on to fame as a progenitor of the minimalist music movement. His hypnotic electronic and electric keyboard works, ranging from drones to blues and from equal temperament to just intonation, have maintained their fascination for a growing portion of underground music lovers worldwide. By his own admission he is perhaps the most significant composer since Ludwig van Beethoven. For many years now Young has collaborated with the visual artist Marian Zazeela whose remarkable light environments frame his musical ideas perfectly, surrounding the performance area with illusory effects in radiant lavender and red violets that heighten the listener's attention.
42 for Henry Flynt probably has not been written out as a composition. The number in the title changes from performance to performance, depending on the number of repetitions of the sounds. The orchestration is flexible as well. This realization was performed by Peter Winkler on gong and was recorded at the Third Annual Festival of the Avant Garde in San Francisco, 1965. Its hypnotic character made it a favorite of KPFA Radio listeners for several generations. For more information on essayist and artist Henry Flynt, visit www.henryflynt.org.

I always loved this recording. 42 strikes of a large gong. That's it. But what a sound. Henry Flynt is (still) an interesting character. See http://www.henryflynt.org/
And isn't 42 the answer to everything?

The Avant Garde Project is a series of 20th-century classical, experimental, and electroacoustic torrents digitized from LPs whose music has in most cases never been released on CD, and so is effectively inaccessible to the vast majority of music listeners today. This is wild stuff, so check it out if you've never heard this sort of music before. The analog rig used to extract the sound from the grooves is near state-of-the-art, producing almost none of the tracking distortion or surface noise normally associated with LPs.

AGP159 is the second featuring the work of the legendary pioneering minimalist composer La Monte Young. This one features The Black Record, which was released originally on LP in a numbered edition of 2800. The files included in this installment appear to have come from a CD original, but I haven't seen any mention elsewhere of a CD reissue. If this is ultimately an LP transcription, it was done with unknown equipment.
I was only given the data files, so I have no scans of the liner notes. I have appended below everything I was readily able to find out about this release. For more information on La Monte Young, see the Wikipedia article on him, or visit his website at:
http://www.melafoundation.org/lmy.htm
I was originally going to include in this installment a transcription of the 2000 CD issue of "Inside the Dream Syndicate, Vol. 1: Day of Niagara", which was recorded in 1965, but the composer's statement criticizing the release has persuaded me otherwise. For more information, see:
http://www.melafoundation.org/statemen.htm
Instead, I have included two versions of side B, one of which has been slowed down by 50%, equivalent to playing the 33 1/3 rpm LP at 16 2/3 rpm, as the composer suggests as one possibility in the liner notes quoted below. The effect is vaguely reminiscent of Iannis Xenakis' electroacoustic work Bohor.

The Wire, Issue #178 (December '98)
La Monte Young on record [excerpt]
By Edwin Pouncey
http://www.thewire.co.uk/articles/192/
"Young and [Marian] Zazeela recorded their first full length album [in 1969] in Munich for Heiner Friedrich's Edition X label. It was Friedrich who later found the couple's Dream House in Harrison Street, New York. A limited edition of 2000, 98 of which were signed and dated by the artists, it came to be known as The Black Record, thanks to Zazeela's black on black cover and label artwork. Side one is a section of Map Of 49's Dream, performed by Young on sinewave drone and voice, with vocal accompaniment by Zazeela. Side two's extract from Study For The Bowed Disc features the duo bowing a gong given to them by sculptor Robert Morris. He had made it for his dance piece, War, and asked Young to play it for the performance. Afterwards Morris presented the gong to Young, and he started to experiment on it with double bass bows. If you follow Young's recommendation to turn it up and play it slow, the resulting low, thrilling drone is at once spiritual and slightly threatening, as though dark forces are being summoned to the surface. Long before Keiji Haino adopted black to shroud himself and his work, Marian Zazeela was embedding her calligraphic lettering and designs in purple and black. The point is to focus on her artwork while concentrating on the vocal/sinewave drones of Young's dream music."

A. 13 I 73 5:35 - 6:14:03 PM NYC is a sub-section of Map Of 49's Dream The Two Systems Of Eleven Sets Of Galactic Intervals Ornamental Lightyears Tracery, begun in 1966 as a section of the even longer work: The Tortoise, His Dreams And Journeys which was begun in 1964 with The Theatre Of Eternal Music. Performed 17 January 1973 at La Monte Young's private studio.
B. Drift Study 14 VII 73 9:27:27 - 10:06:41 PM NYC Three sine waves. Frequencies and voltages of the sine waves determined and tuned by La Monte Young using oscillators custom designed by Rober Adler to generate specific frequencies and voltages of great stability. Performed 14 July 1973 at La Monte Young's private studio.
For the maximum fidelity on Side 2, reduce the treble controls on your pre-amplifier to minimum. Since the sine waves have no harmonic content, and all are below 202.5 Hertz, this will reduce the surface noise which is normal on most discs. Note: Be sure to keep the treble controls normal on Side 1.

AGP160 is the third installment featuring the work of the legendary pioneering minimalist composer La Monte Young. This one features his acknowledged masterwork, The Well Tuned Piano, on 5 CDs. I have to admit that I've been preoccupied with other things the past couple of weeks, so I've only begun to be mesmerized by this unique work. But I can say that it makes the work of other minimalists seem, well, maximalist in comparison.

I was going to continue with the US Electronc Music series this week, but I stumbled upon a cache of out-of-print CDs by the legendary pioneering minimalist composer La Monte Young, and so AGP158 is the first of (probably) three devoted to his work. These CDs are so rare that used copies of some of them sell for hundreds of dollars each.
This week's installment features The Melodic Version (1984) of The Second Dream of The High-Tension Line Stepdown Transformer, from The Four Dreams of China (1962), from a 1991 Gramavision CD (R2-79467). The recording features The Theatre Of Eternal Music Brass Ensemble led by trumpeter Ben Neill. Here the sustained tones produced by the brass section eerily imitate the sounds of the electrical power transformers that Young remembers listening to as a child in Bern, Idaho. This is music stripped down to its bare essentials--just four notes, in fact--so that the harmonic relationships between the complex timbres of those notes can be relished. This work makes the more austere passages in Horatiu Radulecu's Inner Time II (AGP109) sound in comparison like piece by Conlon Nancarrow. It's not for everyone.
I was only given the data files from these CDs, so I have no scans of the liner notes. For more information on La Monte Young, see the Wikipedia article on him.
NOTE: To the best of my knowledge, these recordings are not currently available commercially. If you know otherwise, please let me know ASAP, as I do not wish any artists to be deprived of the royalties that they so richly deserve.

La Monte Young had been invited to appear in Augsburg in conjunction with the "Pop Goes Art" exhibition, and this performance of "Young's Dorian Blues in G" was accompanied by "Ornamental Lightyears Tracery", projected by Marion Zazeela.
Here's how Jutta and Carsten Brandt reported on the exhibition itself:
############
POP GOES ART - ANDY WARHOL & VELVET UNDERGROUND
November 29 - December 7, 1990, Hamburg, Germany
This first exhibition came up in the Phonotek of the Hamburger Kunsthalle. In addition to the printed catalog-box, it was the combination of an installation of tape decks that played the most important recordings together with the exhibited records, books, posters, and photographs that illustrated the work of Andy Warhol and the Velvet Underground. Also, the most influential work of such great artists as Angus MacLise, Gerard Malanga, La Monte Young, and Maria Zazeela was displayed in some examples. A very important part of the catalog box and the exhibition were the wonderful photos by Lisa Law.
August 5 - September 27, 1992, Augsburg, Germany
The second exhibition came up in a much bigger setting in an exhibition space named the Zeughaus. Of course, the idea and the concept for the exhibition was nearly the same than the first time, but the exhibition space could be divided in special sections. That made possible for every aspect to be documented on its own. It was possible to invite Nat Finkelstein, Gerard Malanga, Sterling Morrison, Maureen Tucker, La Monte Young and Maria Zazeela to show parts of their most influential work in the context of the Warhol/Velvets history. Lots of rare books, posters, records, photographs, and drawings were displayed for the first time. A program of films by Gerard Malanga, Jonas Mekas, Paul Morissey, Ron Rice, Jack Smith, and Andy Warhol took place as a side program during the weeks the exhibition was opened.
############
This isn't a great recording, but it's not too bad. It is in stereo, but there's not much dynamic range. I received the recording in 3 parts, spread over 2 cassettes: I have left it that way so it can be easily burnt onto 3 CDRs.

AGP1-154 are now available for direct download in the archive at www.avantgardeproject.org
AGP155-160 and other AGP installments are also available at http://thepiratebay.org/user/loudav
---------- ---------- ---------- ======
AGP161 is the fourth installment featuring the work of the legendary pioneering minimalist composer La Monte Young. This one comprises The Tamburas Of Pandit Pran Nath, with Marian Zazeela. It will appeal to all those people who, while listening to Indian Classical Music, have wished that the sitars and vinas would just stop their noodling and let the rich timbres of the tamburas cascade out on their own. It is the droniest of drone music.
I was only given the data files, so I have no scans of the liner notes. I have appended below everything I was readily able to find out about this release. For more information on La Monte Young, see the Wikipedia article on him, or visit his website at:

NOTES FROM THE CD:
Recorded by La Monte Young and Marian Zazeela in 1982, it is made available in a limited edition on CD as an homage to their guru. This recording was used by Pandit Pran Nath for his own practice for many years. Accompanied by a booklet that includes two color and seven black and white photographs as well as extensive documentation prepared by Young and Zazeela regarding the origins and history of the Tambura and its significance in the Indian classical vocal style of Kirana as practiced and taught by Pandit Pran Nath, this 74-minute CD represents Young's best recorded tambura tuning. In his introduction to the notes, Terry Riley writes, "This recording is an invaluable artifact, destined to become a cherished classic, valued for years to come by those able to appreciate the subtle vibratory qualities of this High Art."
The tamburas are played at Jora Sa 120 Hz, Pa 90 Hz, Kuraj Sa 60 Hz (low B pitch).
This is a custom First CD Edition limited to the number that can be personally supervised by La Monte Young and Marian Zazeela. The 44-page printed booklet and silkscreened disc are packaged inside a double-size plastic CD jewel case.

"When he would sing, the raga would manifest in the walls" -Terry Riley
A long-awaited release from La Monte Young and Marian Zazeela's archives featuring two hour-long ragas by one of India's most important singers of the 20th century, Pandit Pran Nath. Born in 1918, Pandit Pran Nath began seriously studying the raga at the age of six. Possessed with a prodigious memory, he would literally spend hours a day singing and learning hundreds of raga compositions and poems, frequently outdoors in forests or in the middle of rivers. He spent several years living in the caves of Tapkeshwar as a holy ascetic, clothed only in ash, singing for hours at a time amidst the other devotees.
By the 1930s he was regularly appearing on All India Radio to great acclaim as the leading interpreter of the Kirana style. He made his first concert appearance in the United States in 1970 and his impact at this time on American musicians and artists is hard to overstate; Terry Riley, La Monte Young, and Marian Zazeela would become formal disciples in a student/guru relationship for many, many years. Some of Pandit Pran Nath's other students included Charlemagne Palestine, Jon Hassell, Yoshi Wada, Henry Flynt, Don Cherry, Rhys Chatham, and Christer Hennix.
The recordings presented here feature Riley, Young, and Zazeela as accompanists, and were made in 1971 and 1977; they are the only available performances on CD at this time. Pandit Pran Nath tended to primarily focus on the alap portion of the raga (which is the more meditative beginning section), often stretching it out to forty or more minutes. That he did so is important in that the qualities that figure prominently in the alap -- the drone and the infinitely subtle pitch relationships between notes -- were what resonated so sharply with the American minimalist composers.
Pandit Pran Nath seems like a force of nature on these performances; you can actually feel his voice in your chest as the ragas unfold. His ability to sustain a note for what seems an eternity, and then continue to provide endless variations in pitch are time disorienting and mind melting. For Pandit Pran Nath, music was the force of god made manifest. That he believed so shows in these tour de force performances which I can't recommend highly enough. [MK-Other Music]

AGP1-154 are now available for direct download in the archive at www.avantgardeproject.org
AGP155-161 and other AGP installments are also available at http://thepiratebay.org/user/loudav
---------- ---------- ---------- ======
AGP162 is the fifth and (for the time being, I think) final installment in our long-overdue celebration of the work of the legendary pioneering minimalist composer La Monte Young. This one features an unauthorized release of what sounds like a concert recording of excerpts from Just Charles & Cello In The Romantic Chord (2002-2003), with Charles Curtis on cello (who is in fact the only cellist authorized to perform this work). The concert performances of this work lasted about four hours, of which about two hours are included in this recording. Professor Curtis plays cello over pre-recorded drones that he controlled on stage by means of foot pedals. The lighting composition was created by Marian Zazeela.
This may be my favorite of the La Monte Young installments. The harmonic explorations are akin to those in The Well-Tuned Piano, but the potential for unlimited sustain in the cello and the softer edge of the instrumental sound better enable me to drink in the slowly explored tonal relationships. If you could imagine a two-hour alap performed by a very self-effacing sarangi player, you'll have some idea of the sound. Listening to it again just now, I found myself imagining arrangements for vielle a roue or bagpipe. Both would entail some modifications of the instruments to accommodate Young's just intonation and the changing drones, but with a suitably fit instrumentalist you could recreate the piece without having to pre-record the drones.
The FLAC files for this release were provided through the generosity of a dedicated AGP partisan. Both discs come with log and cue files (and don't you just love the idea of a cue file for a CD consisting of only one track?), but once again I have no scans of whatever liner notes may have accompanied the CD. I did find a low-res image of the cover.

The Electric Harpsichord
2010
Die Schachtel Oct/2010
Deluxe edition, silver and gloss varnish print, innovative silver/black cardboard book+CD edition, 60 pp in English. Limited to 500 copies
Known to the very few, The Electric Harpsichord is possibly THE obscure masterpiece of the days of the early American minimalism. Recorded live in 1976 after many years of study under the guidance of Pandit Pran Nath and LaMonte Young, it has finally found the perfect home in the DieSchachtel ART catalogue: a lavishly produced and innovative silver/black cardboard book+CD edition, that gives the work the space and merit it deserves as a unique work of art, complete with two poems by LaMonte Young especially written for this edition, and an extensive essay by Henry Flynt.
An improvisation performed on Just Intonation tuned keyboards put through time lag accumulators similar to those used by Terry Riley, Hennix has produced one of the most remarkable pieces of music to emerge from the La Monte Young school of minimalism. A Swedish born composer, who studied in the tradition of the Xenakis and Stockhausen in the 1960s, Hennix met La Monte Young and Hindustani raga master Pandit Pran Nath at the Nuits du Fondation Maeght festival in 1970, and pursued studies with both men during the 1970s. While the use of the time lag in Riley's works such as "A Rainbow in Curved Air" results in an experience of blissful, focused, samadhi-like calm, Hennix's drone work has more in common with the chaotic fluxes of psychedelic experience or the mandalas of Tibetan Buddhism. This is a moving eternity, pulsating, shifting-something like a raga perhaps, insofar as a raga is a specific deity invoked into sound, shifting, fluttering inside the matrix of the drone. (Marcus Boom)
"In every media, the work of Christer Hennix shows extraordinary mastery of the interrelationship between Eastern and Western thought"
La Monte Young
"Hennixs The Electric Harpsichord is a gigantic piece, ma killer, a work which exists outside of style or genre. It is unbelievable. It creates blocks of sound that move min and out of each other to create the effects. It is a pure perfect piece of music that resonates and resounds and creates a universe that it is impossible by other means. In our primitive and unenlightened culture it becomes a work of transcendent power."
Glenn Branca
(http://www.dieschachtel.com/editions/dsA10.htm)
Hyperbole and silence wrap around Catherine Christer Hennixs music like the black and white of yin and yang. La Monte Young and Henry Flynt have praised her merger of music and mathematics for decades (well, initially his merger Christer Hennix was born in 1948 and took the name Catherine when she adopted the female gender in 1990). Hennix hasnt exactly promoted herself; while shes lived and occasionally performed in Europe since the early 90s, until now she hadnt made any records. Until the release of this volume, the only way to hear Hennix was in person, on certain Henry Flynt records (CTune, Purified By Fire, and Dharma Warriors) and via Ubuweb.
This release is an excerpt from a 1976 concert and is issued now in tribute to her late guru Pandit Pran Nath, the Kirana gharana singer who also taught Young, Terry Riley and Jon Hassell and died in 1996. Its swanky packaging signifies significance; the CD comes wrapped inside a 60-page booklet with two poems by Young, a lengthy historical-philosophical discussion of the work by Flynt, and an even longer (and decidedly over-my-head) mathematical discussion of the piece by Hennix. But the most meaningful part of the project is Hennixs rather extraordinary music.
Hennix had been involved with music since her youth, when she got lessons from the American jazz musicians who stayed in her parents Stockholm home, and shed begun working with primitive computer systems before she began associating with Young. After encountering Nath, she synthesized her analysis of tambura drones with the electronic sine tones that Young played in his house all day, every day. The outcome was a music mathematically calculated to induce altered states. The instrumental set-up on The Electric Harpsichord resembles Terry Rileys time-lag accumulator she plays an electric keyboard, in this case a Yamaha tuned in Just Intonation and fed into a tape delay system but the results are quite different. Where Riley generated overlapping streams of notes, Hennixs music rises and falls like ocean waves, with bright harmonics glinting atop a continuous sound like whitecaps. The harpsichords spindly key strokes accumulate into an undulating sonic mass that is neither harsh in the fashion of contemporary noisemakers nor bland. Instead, its rich in tones and overtones that seem to multiply in fractal cells that maintain their integrity as they increase in density. Put the CD on and putter about and it just sounds nice; give it your undivided attention and it sucks you right in and whips the alpha waves to the top of your brain pan like foam to the top of a cappuccino.
The effect is a slowing of experienced time, which may be a partial explanation for why it took Hennix so long to get this record out. But to stretch time is to stretch life, and what greater gift could you get from a five-inch shiny disc?

Recordings from Composition 1960 by La Monte Young, Halfslaap III part 2 from Machinefabriek + Fox String Quartet and Conscience of Sound by James Fulkerson.
1. La Monte Young. Composition 1960. 19:15.
2. Machinefabriek + Fox String Quartet. Halfslaap III part 2. 10:37.
3. James Fulkerson. Conscience of Sound. 30:46.
Recorded on 22/23 November 2015 in Tivoli/Vredenburg by Wijnand de Groot.
During the 24-Hour Dronefest violinist Bas Wiegers, trombonist Koen Kaptijn and pianist Nora Mulder played pieces by James Fulkerson and La Monte Young.
In Conscience of Sound by Fulkerson the music moves imperceptibly from one sound to another. The smallest scale is stretched to insane proportions and fills the space with nothing but sound.
La Monte Young is the drone composer par excellence. During Le Guess Who? sounds his Composition 1960. It is the longest composition with the least notes. There are two, and the only clue is to be held for a long time. "
Rutger Zuydervelt, his artist name is Machinefabriek, wrote a new composition for string quartet and electronics, commissioned by Gaudeamus. Zuydervelt has been experimenting lately with more permanent structures, from which his work Halfslaap II (for violin and electronics) has emerged. Gaudeamus challenges Zuydervelt to taking it a step further. Zuydervelt recreated Halfslaap II into a version for string quartet and electronics: Halfslaap III. Fox String Quartet, led by cellist Martin Fox, does not work with a fixed score, but can apply nuances and dynamics in the piece. Musicians are thus just as much the composer as Zuydervelt himself.
