Nico et Andy Warhol
Panorama
27 mai 1966-01min 49s

NICO - JANITOR OF LUNACY (Live, BBC TV, 1971)

Rare footage of Nico on TV's The Old Grey Whistle Test, performing Janitor Of Lunacy, her "tribute" to ex-lover Brian Jones.
Nico was meant to perform this song at the famous Rolling Stones 1969 gig in Hyde Park - now on the DVD Stones In The Park - in memory of Brian Jones, with Jagger's & The Stones' blessings, but she arrived late, couldn't carry her harmonium through the huge gathering of people in Hyde Park and the only person there to help her was a young, still unknown David Bowie... Shame that she never made it to the stage, the exposure could have done wonders for her career...

Though the CD art says "New York 1968", this is usually dated "April 1970" or just "1970" (see below), and is said to have been recorded in Nico's hotel room. When this boot was originally posted on EZT in January 2005 someone commented that it is actually from January 1972, prior to Reed, Nico, and Cale's January 29 show at Le Bataclan.

Kevin Ayers, John Cale, Eno, Nico
June 1, 1974 - The Outtakes

Remastered version

What I did : remove an awful lot of hiss / equalization / transition between tracks to make it a seamless show / design the cover art

This is by far the best version available (if you except the extracts that were officially released and that I have removed here.

"Baby's on fire" was played twice during this show : in the beginning and as the last encore. The encore has been officially released, but without its extra percussive introduction. Here I have kept the introduction and made it followed by the song as it was played in the beginning of the show.

audience tape 1st gen.>CDR(PhilpsCDR570)>wave(EAC)<flacf(8)

The quality of the music is good to very good,in the beginning there are a lot of mics tuning noise. The show was in a very small venue in front of only a few people and you hear mostly between the songs some noise from the audience, some political statements a lot of "BUH" & SCHEISSE(SHIT) shouters.Absolutely rare performance by these three artists.
Brian Eno plays fantastic electronics and synthezizer during " Das Lied Der Deutschen"John Cale has his hottest moments when he plays viola to Nico`s voice and pump organ.Very rare tracks and versions of great music.I had a lot of work with that tape,I removed some clicks and noise, fade in and fade out some tracks,a little bit equalizing and work with the channel,I hope you like it,it`s another rare document of music history and the Brian Eno work during some songs is worth the download.
"The End" is hypnotic with Brian Eno`s electronics,John Cale played a great piano and superb violin to Nico`s excellent voice and the sound of her pump organ. And for all Dolby surround fans a WARNING ,this is audience and not perfect,a lot of crowd noise and riot in the audience, a controverse show , most of the people in the audience hate the show and you have some loud shouters.

I've also included a scan of a ticket stub from this show, which I believe I somehow got from this upload of the Tangerine Dream show.

This artwork will also be uploaded as separate attachments.

I also included an amusing excerpt from an article about the show from a Circus Magazine from 1975.

Basically I was given two rare recordings of this concert and this is a compilation and a combined version of both of these shows removing the French DJ commentary that was present on the FM broadcast version.

The FM broadcast portion although from an official radio broadcast and of much better quality, does not seem to accurately convey the magnitude and ambience of this extraordinary venue, which is amply evident in the audience version of this recording.
I found that by combining the two together, you get the best of both.
Unfortunately this was only possible for about 1/3 of the show as the FM broadcast was quite short.

The audience recording was pitch matched to the FM Broadcast version, which is very close to Nico's performance on the official June 1, 1974 CD.
The Indian harmonium she used was not a perfectly tuned instrument and so digital analysis is not an accurate reference.

The audience portion aside from the pitch correction is untouched, but the FM broadcast portion required some mid range compression to reduce giant volume spikes in Nico's vocals.
There was a fair amount of hiss present as well that was removed as this is more than compensated by the ambience of the audience recording which had plenty of nice high end frequencies.
A widening of the stereo separation was also applied to match the audience recording and because it sounded better in my opinion.

The first two minutes of Janitor of Lunacy is missing from the FM broadcast, so it begins with only the audience recording.

The beginning few bars of Abschied was subbed from a show at the Squat Theatre in 1980 to assist in the removal of the DJ dialogue.
Oddly this song was missing from the more complete audience recording, likely due to a tape flip.

The remainder of the show is only the audience version and is not present in the broadcast without dialogue on top.

Also of note is the rare encore of Ari's Song.
This may be the only recorded live performance of this classic from the Marble Index record.

A number of liberties were taken to simulate transitions between tracks as the audience taper shut his recorder off between every song.
Infinitely preferable to the jarring Francophone DJ interruptions.
If anyone has the pre-FM broadcast tapes, please contact me and I would be thrilled to upgrade this further.

Enjoy !

This sounds really good for an audience recording from 1975. The whole thing runs 30 minutes and might be a partial. John Cale steps up for one song and plays bass.

Nico "Genghis Khan"
Aujourd'hui magazine
27 févr. 1978

Remarques

FB : 27 décembre 2019
Rosa Monde : i was at this gig, Nico didn't show! Siouxsie, though, was spellbinding...
Marco Cavaiola : Siouxie was so happy to be on tour with nico. She liked her a lot. But the people who came to see them had no idea who nico was and were she came from and treated Her very badly. The harmonium was far from the idea they had of punk and gothic music. It went so bad that nico quit the tour after few dates. Siouxie was really sad about it. But that's was it. She also said that in a better days that was the best thing .NICO and siouxie. She fell in love With nico since her husband gave her the album June 1 1974. She said that nico was so beautiful on the cover, like a dark Angel. And started to listen all her records. But, that's how ended up. I read all this from an interwiev to siouxie about the experience. I can't remember if it was on the book "life and life of an icon. ??

A really cool solo performance by Nico with help from Lutz Ulbrich and John Cale. The crowd is rapturous, but only AFTER the songs.
It's a really good sounding tape. A few seconds repeat themselves at the beginning of Track 8 (don't ask), other than that, smooth sailing.

This tape was labeled as March 8 & 9, 1979 I was not able to find any verifiable information on these dates at CBGB's. I can only assume these dates are correct.
It's unclear to me which portions of this tape come from either March 8 or 9.
After spending time on listening and tracking this tape, It's clear to me that the last 4 songs (tracks 15-18) are from a different show.
As Nico was starting track 4 "Tananore", she stops to yell at some people in the crowd saying "No You Can't Talk, Dammit" !!
An interesting moment is when Nico starts playing "Tanamore" again on track 8, then stops half way through, and it sounds like she says "I forgot I already did it".
It's possible that these March gigs may have been recorded by SKOTF Archive, who also recorded Nico at CBGB's on Feb 19, 1979.
I find Nico extremely hard to understand what she is singing and have a very difficult time trying to identify her song titles.
I had help with some of the song titles from: Sousourn1823.
If anyone can shine some more light on this recording, i'd appreciate it. has anyone heard of these recordings before?
I also had to do some major volume balancing on this recording. The channels were very uneven. It's much better now.

Digitizing notes:

The same recording appears on both sides of the cassette - presumably, side A is the master.
The taper suggested that back in the day, he often tried to consolidate tape by re-combining segments on other cassettes. A segment of the same recording also appears on the B-side of Beat The Dutch 25 October 1980.

I've read more than one review stating that this was a solo performance, featuring Nico and a harmonium, but clearly she is accompanied by a guitar at times. Most of the songs here were aborted, and Nico's voice does sound like it was in pretty rough shape; it seems that she left the stage several times, and was coaxed back by the audience (who are pretty vocal toward the end). At one point mid-set, the (unidentified) guitarist plays a short instrumental, and possibly the same person sings a James Brown cover, which seems almost surreal in the context of this performance. I've heard from people who attended the show that Nico had a meltdown, which I suppose is a pretty easy thing for someone to say, but it does sound as though both her health and psyche were fairly fragile at the time. Still, there are five complete songs here, a few of which are minimal interpretations of the album versions.

Trivia note: This show took place less than two weeks after Joy Division would have been playing at the same venue, on 29 May 1980, with Husker Du scheduled as an opening act.

This is rare and good quality recording appeared here about a month ago in it's raw form, but had some serious technical problems.
It is still available for anyone who wants it here http://www.dimeadozen.org/torrents-details.php?id=169199
Thanks to mjs820 for this original upload.
I've also included the original notes that accompanied this original upload as it provided very useful information.

These issues have largely been corrected here with tremendous results, making it very worthwhile.
A number of comments and information from other members have also been incorporated here with thanks.

Repairs, Remastering, technical details :
---------- ---------- ---------- --------
1) Massive level boost with limiter (approx +22 db !)
2) Rebalancing of left and right channels
3) Low end boost on harmonium
4) Occasional midrange compression on Nico's vocals to compensate for giant leaps in volume when she would sing loudly.
5) Declicking towards end of disc two in original upload from either degraded CDR or extraction method.
6) Resequencing and splitting into two separate performances
7) Attachment of missing conclusion of "The End" (for the purposes of continuity) from a pitch matched Reims Cathedral 1974/12/13 performance from a French radio broadcast.
8) An intentional gap was left to show an audible edit in the late show
9) Irrepairable tape munching occurs during Procession
10) A short edit occurs just prior to the start of Procession, but appears to only represents the taper hitting the pause button
and not a large missing gap or a jump to a new performance.

---------- ----------
Performance details :
---------- ----------
Aside from these technical issues...
a great pair of shows, especially the sadly incomplete "early show".
Nice to hear these raw, harmonium only versions of the songs that would later appear with (inferior IMHO) full band interpretations on the Drama of Exile LP.
In addition, an escalating exchange occurs between Nico and an offstage "ballerina dancer", finally resulting in Nico yelling at her and telling her to "get out of here or I'll cut your head !", followed by "dumb ass !" etc ...
Most amusing.
---------- ---------- -----
Performance date research :
---------- ---------- -----
The original upload consisted of at least two different shows, which I think I have separated accurately.
It is based on edits in the tape, sound quality differences and logic, due to the songs performed and where they would normally appear in her shows.
It does seem very reasonable to assume it is all recorded at this venue and from this time period.
John Gilmore on sax and the mention of Cheetah seems to confirm this, as well as similar audience sizes, PA sound etc.

However, it is extremely unlikely that Nico would have played the same songs in the same show.

It's possible she performed more than one show a night.

It's also possible these are from different dates entirely.

Nico apparently was living at the Squat Theatre during this time and was the resident artist.
According to the website historical chronology, she played there about 10 times starting in October 79 through to the end of 1980.
However this particular date of July 21 is not listed.
No one else apparently performed that night either.
http://squattheatre.com/concerts1980.html

This leaves a number of possibilities that may never be known.

1) It IS all from July 21, 1980 and she played an early and a late show.
This seems unlikely for a Monday night.
I'm guessing this date is entirely wrong and is a mislabeled cassette.
Perhaps the original uploader or taper can recheck it.

2) The "early show" is from July 12, 1980 and the "late show" is from November 21, 1980.
Both shows are her solo and have similar days or months in 1980.
This does makes sense as Nico mentions in the "late show" that she is
without her guitarist Cheetah (Cheetah Chrome from the Dead Boys).
Apparently something went wrong with his guitar.
His first show with her was not until Sep.12, 1980.

3) Some variation of the above.

4) None of the above !

5) A Nico recording on July 21, 1982 exists from San Francisco, but does not include saxophonist John Gilmore who is present on both "shows"
and that set list does not resemble either of these shows.

So I guess you can all draw your own conclusions unless someone has further information.

Original Raw Format Information File

First of all, many thanks to ferges, mr rubbish, and littleorphan for the recent Nico uploads.
I haven't had a chance to listen to everything yet, but what I've heard so far sounds great!

The aforementioned uploads actually reminded me of a Nico recording that I picked up in trade several years ago. Here's the information I received with the CD:

Nico
Squat Theater
New York, New York
July 21, 1980

Source: audience recording

Lineage: unknown equipment > analog master > CDR

After checking the live database, however, I realized that there's no listing for this show.
Nico played at the Squat Theater on September 12, 1980, but the setlist doesn't match. She also played a show on July 21, 1982 at the Old Waldorf in San Francisco, but that doesn't match what I have either. (Of course, to complicate things even further, I'm completely unfamiliar with Nico's solo material!)

In any case, what I do have are three continuous recordings on one CD. Are they from different dates? Is this an early show/late show situation? Or do the edits simply represent tape flips?
I have no idea. The only thing I know for sure is that I have a very good live recording of Nico that isn't doing anyone any good collecting dust on a shelf!

If anyone could provide the correct date(s) and/or location(s) for this material (or even the song titles for that matter), I would be most grateful.

Updated Lineage: unknown equipment > analog master > CDR > WAV (EAC) > FLAC Level 8 (TLH)

Please note that track 11 is NOT the same version as the one released on Nico album "Do or Die: Diary 1982"; the released version is from the actual show, while this one is from the soundcheck.

1985/09/??

This was recorded from an FM broadcast in 1985, which apparently presented one hour of the show rather than the full performance. This was the tour that resulted in the double live LP "Behind the Iron Curtain," though, strangely enough, that release was recorded in Rotterdam (ie, not behind the Iron Curtain). Same band and tour as the great Nico/Berlin torrent: http://www.dimeadozen.org/torrents-details.php?id=61618 (thanks for that!).

I have always loved this recording. I started working with artists who lived "behind the Iron Curtain" in the early 1980s, and this music always seemed to capture the mood of the places I visited and the melancholy that accompanied the knowledge that I could come and go as I pleased, but my friends there could not.

This tape was one of many by Western artists circulated in the Eastern European underground. The sound quality is very good, but not perfect; appropriate, somehow, to the circumstances.

Track List:
Track 01 intro (announcer)
Track 02 fearfully in danger
Track 03 my heart is empty
Track 04 procession
Track 05 one more chance
Track 06 janitor of lunacy
Track 07 konig
Track 08 you forget to answer
Track 09 win a few
Track 10 all tomorrows parties
Track 11 purple lips
Track 12 outro (announcer)

According to this site (http://smironne.free.fr/NICO/pecs.html) the full concert also included the following:

My Funny Valentine
The End
Femme Fatale
60/40

If anyone has the complete set I would be most grateful if you would upload it or the missing songs. If not, please enjoy this very nice recording.

Band:
Nico: vocals, indian pump organ
James Young (James Edward): piano, keyboards
Eric Random: tabla, percussion, synthesiser
Eric Graham Dowdall: Electronic percussion
Nico: vocals, Indian pump organ

Recording:
There is a cut in track 6 for a tape flip. This is in the source.

FM > tape (2nd generation) > TotalRecorder 24/192,000 > SoundForge bit depth conversion to 16/44,100 > dbAmp flac encoder (level 6)

Sound quality: B+

*****
NB 1: Most of my recordings were received as tape or cd-r trades. I can't vouch for the source or generation of any recording not made by me and marked as being copied from the "Master" (this is not one). Sound quality is a qualitative judgement.

NB 2: I am behind a firewall. Sorry...

- Das Lied Vom Einsamen Madchen: splice

Welcome to volume 44 of our continuing MRDR Master Series of recordings and photographs documenting four decades of shows through Northern Italy and beyond.

Volume 44 takes us to Bagnolo Mella, a town in the province of Brescia, in Lombardy and a rare capture of Nico on her 1985/1986 Tour. This show does not appear to be widely circulated, if circulated at all, which is a shame because it is excellent quality from start to finish.

Based on the photos, MR captured it near dead center maybe 10 - 15 rows back and an excellent job it is with only a small splice during "Das Lied Vom Einsamen Madchen".

Though I have not heard too many Nico shows from this tour, this one appears to be a little longer than the standard 1986 set, in addition I would imagine it is one of the better recordings documenting this tour.

Other than with the Velvet Underground, Nico has not been on my radar but MR who has followed her career tells me they got an exceptional show on this night and even the casual fan should find it of interest.

Thanks to MR for the master file and the rare photos he took during the show we've used on the covers...

Master - Audience recording from my old TDK-Sa C-90 Tapes

Artwork is included !!

This concert I taped with my old AIWA-walkman and an extra microphone (I can't remember what equipment it was).

I recorded it from about 5 meters from the stage on the left side in the middle of the audience.
The sound quality is very good+ - excellent-.

Oh, a strange concert in my long time-taper-career: Miss Ch. Paeffgen hereself.
As expected it was a bit boring and trist (as I thought about some nice methods of doing a suicide afterwards, but did not find a real spectacular one), but the audience gave her a frenentic applause at the end.
Hope you like it and enjoy (enjoy????) it.

Sorry, not setlist.
As always: if anyone can help me out with a setlist (perhaps someone from Gelsenkirchen?)
I will seed the back cover with the titles again. Thanks for that.

Do not sell. For trading only. ..and perhaps for fun!(??????)

I've never seen this anywhere until now. I don't know if it's from an FM broadcast or SBD.
There are no radio DJ comments.. I couldn't find any reference for this date.
I have no odea what the set list is.. I just can't understand a word she says.
If someone could figure out the set list, that would be great.
Here's a good archive site that lists most of Nico's live tapes and set lists.
