T69.7.3. Newport Jazz Festival
Newport, Rhode Island, 3 July 1969.. Total time not specified. Private recording, "very erratic sound." [Shore]

The Shadow World [Sun Ra] (5:37)
Prepare for the journey to other worlds [Sun Ra] (3:07)
Velvet [Sun Ra] (3:14)

Somebody else's idea [incomplete] [Sun Ra] (1:50)
Sun Ra & his band from outer space [Sun Ra] (ca. 2:25)

The Arkestra: Ra-Farfisa org, Hohner clavinet, Spacemaster org, voc; Walter Miller-tp; Kwame Hadi-tp; Akh Tal Ebah-tp, mellophone; Marshall Allen-as, fl, ob, picc; Danny Davis-as, fl; John Gilmore-ts, perc; Pat Patrick-bs, fl; Danny Ray Thompson-bs, fl; James Jacson-bsn, ob, perc; Robert Cummings-bcl, perc; Alex Blake-b; Nimrod Hunt-perc; William Brister (Rashid Salim IV)-perc; Lex Humphries-d; Clifford Jarvis-d; June Tyson-voc. [personnel Shore, except that he gives Eloe Omoe as the bass clarinet player; performance also included a light show, according to Chase. Additions by Moudry 20021011]

[My update of the above information is based on a CD of an audience recording of the set. Walter Miller identified himself upon hearing the music and actually sang along with one of his solos (October 2002). My copy lacks the last item, the infectious Sun Ra & his band from outer space. Thanks to John Cottrell. Added 20021011, Moudry.]

Notes: Got this in a trade a long time ago. Don't have any information as to the lineage. My guess is that it was a radio recording, but I could be mistaken. This was one of those long-rumored shows, probably due to the curse. When I digitized this, I had to approximate where some of the tunes began, since it is sometimes hard to figure out. Sound quality is subjective, but I don't think it is that bad for the time period.

- - - -

A few years back, I tracked down a still sealed copy of this boxset; cost a pretty penny.
An entire run of gigs from 1980-12-26 thru to 1981-01-01, yummy!
Imagine to my dismay, one of the discs is MISSING (disc 19) - bootlegs, sigh.
I wrapped the whole thing back up, and put it aside, bummed.

In the midst of the great Sun Ra 100th birthday celebration of 2014, I revisited the box.
Started disc extracts, reviewing what's official, title gathering, and whatnot.
Never finished, but I'm trying to remedy that now.

Examination of the Tape-ography shows that some of the 1980-12-31 & 1981-01-01 shows were officially released.
("Beyond the Purple Star Zone was drawn from this marathon stand by the Arkestra, as well as (parts of?) God's Private Eye.")

- - - -

This is my attempt to pull from the box, what I think is shareable.
(I'm not sure if anyone's already shared some of these in the past - likely not in my time here.)
A couple look like MPEG - 1980-12-27 + 1981-01-01 03AM, so I skipped those shows.
I can't speak to their provenance, but can say they were this way on the Transparency disks.
And because of the official release, I'll skip all of the 1980-12-31 & 1981-01-01 shows.

So this takes the remaining gigs, and shares them individually.
If this is successful, it'd be exactly half the box - 14 of the 28 discs.

Straight bootleg liberation of discs 14-15-16 from the "Transparency 0507" 28x CD set.
No modifications done to the files, just FLAC'ed 'em up.

NOTES

Titles are as noted on the Transparency paperwork inside the box.

Note: An audio version of the complete concert was uploaded by firstrays123 on January 27, 2010, torrent # 287560. It is still on the tracker but has no seeder.
Re: personnel: firstrays123 lists 4 trumpeters, but there are only two; on the other hand he doesn't list the bassoon player. The Sun Ra Tapeography (http://homepage.uab.edu/moudry/tape_f.htm) lists a slightly different personnel based on the performers identified by 'Trent' from the videotape.
3sat started its live transmission on June 27th @ 11:24 p.m. which means that the performance lasted into the following day.
There are a few very short fluctuations in this recording where the picture turns from color to black and white. Otherwise, sound and picture are O.K.
