This was released on both Mainstream Records and Time Records. The Time records release (S/8004) is much rarer than the Mainstream version. The Time Records stereo version also has much better sound quality. The cover art by Yoko Ono is also sharper and more vibrant.

JOHN LENNON/PLASTIC ONO BAND (Apple SW 3372) and YOKO ONO/PLASTIC ONO BAND (Apple SW 3373). The only similarity here is between the album covers. Both depict almost identical pastel-hued country scenes. On Lennon's, however, Yoko sits beneath the tree holding his head in her lap; on her recording the positions are reversed. But, as I said, that's the only similarity.
Lennon, on his album, plays and sings with only the support of bass, drums (Ringo Starr) and, on a few tracks, piano; Yoko Ono is listed as a performer of ``winds.'' The net result is a group of empty selections that sound like basic Beatle music tracks--that is, the first tracks made in a recording studio, before various superstructures, textures and coloring devices have been added. Under the right circumstances, such a paring down to basics can be artistically illuminating as well as enjoyable; the obvious parallel is with the classical string quartet--one of the purest forms of musical distillation in Western music.
Alas, no such parallel exists here. Lennon seems to have intentionally reduced his musical thoughts to the bare minimum. I don't doubt that he did so in search of musical and psychic clarity, but he hasn't convinced me that he has found it. Many of the songs reflect the concerns that no doubt have dominated his thoughts since the break-up of the Beatles and his much-publicized California interlude with psychotherapy. References to his mother and to his relationship with Yoko Ono color most of the material.
Curiously, the album resembles Paul McCartney's recent solo outing in its dogged emphasis upon musical self-centeredness. Clearly, these are two artists who lost something important when their intimate working partnership deteriorated.
Yoko Ono's music consists almost entirely of wailing vocal sounds accompanied by frenzied, but essentially rather simple-minded back-up rhythms. A little of it goes a long way. Too long.

Yoko Ono's note on Joe Jones Tone Deaf Music Co.
i was always fascinated by the idea of making special instruments for special emotions--instuments that lead us to emotions arrived by their own motions rather than by our control. with those instuments, i wanted to explore emotions and vibrations which have not been explored as yet in music.
i thought of building a house on the hill which makes different sounds on a windy day by the wind that goes through different windows, doors and holes (re: grapefruit paperback edition)
then i've met joe jones who's been making such instruments for 10 years almost unoticed [sic]. joe built me 8 new instruments specially for this album which can play by themselves with minimum manipulation. (turning switches only)

Syracuse Museum Is Still Breaking New Ground, by William Kates
from The Buffalo News, 15 October 1997

It was a cold, rainy October evening in 1971 and nearly 8,000 people were camped around the Everson Art Museum.
The museum had gone out on a limb and turned over its entire building to aspiring artist Yoko Ono, then more famous as the woman who broke up the Beatles. Her conceptual works were experimental even for the progressive Everson, and museum officials weren't sure what to expect.
In one room, a large wall contained hundreds of small doors leading to empty boxes. It was titled "Portrait of John Lennon as a Young Cloud."
In another room, "Water Event Artists, " highlighted dozens of objects, all filled with water and sent to Ono by friends."
The next day, a record 4,000 people pushed through the doors for the opening of Ono's exhibit. The others were content to wait outside, hoping for a glimpse of Ono, John Lennon or any of the famous personalities in attendance.
"If it was hot, we did it back then," said retired Everson director Jim Harithas, who booked Ono for her first major museum exhibit.
"We were going way beyond the traditional role of a museum as merely a repository," Harithas said. "We wanted to be original. Very often we were the first. We were cutting edge. It seems like it's been quiet since those days."
The Everson turns 100 years old this year and for its second century, current director Sandra Trop has made it her mission to return to that sense of daring.
"We intend to take risks," she said. "In the future, when people in major cities talk about what's new in the art world, they'll talk about the Everson again."
The museum's birth was a humble one.
It started as little more than a collection of paintings hanging downstairs in a building that served as home for the May Memorial Unitarian Universalist Society.
At the insistence of George Fisk Comfort, the state Board of Regents granted a charter to the Museum of Fine Arts in 1897, prescribing its mission as "the cultivation of the fine arts and the promotion of their practical application."
Comfort was dean of Syracuse University's School of Fine Arts--the first school in the country to offer an art degree--and one of the founders of the Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York City.
It would not be until 1968--after being sheltered in a bank, a library and a Knights of Columbus building--that the museum would have its own dedicated building, financed in part by a $1 million bequest made in 1941 by Helen Everson, heiress to her father's hardware and real estate fortunes.
Everson's generosity set off a 20-year legal brawl between the city, Syracuse University and her family over use of the money.
After the legal wrangling ended, museum officials turned to a budding architect to design their new home.
I.M. Pei responded with an artistic masterpiece.
"The work was very much inspired by the art movement of that particular time. I treated that project as much as a work of sculpture as a work of architecture," said Pei, who has since become prominent worldwide for his work on the Louvre in Paris, the East Wing of the National Gallery of Art in Washington, D.C., the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in Cleveland, and the John F. Kennedy Library in Boston.
The landmark structure--which Pei said remains one of his favorites--was hailed as "the perfect museum." It was, all at once, majestic and understated, daring and subtle, simple and complex.
With Harithas' arrival from the Corcoran Art Gallery in 1971, the Everson entered golden times. His vision was to make the museum a mecca for avant-garde and experimental art forms.
By that time, the Everson already boasted a universally acclaimed collection of American ceramics, including 31 original porcelain works by Adelaide Alsop Robineau, one of America's finest ceramists.
Among those who had shows at the Everson during Harithas' three-year tenure were Yoko Ono, Norman Bluhm, Joan Mitchell, Charlotte Moorman and pioneering video artist Nam June Paik.
"Unlike most museums content to merely survive, the Everson took risks," said former curator David Ross, now director of the Whitney Art Museum in New York City.

The Mike Douglas Show

14 February - 18 February 1972

In 1972 John and Yoko appeared on the Mike Douglas Show five days in a row as co-hosts. Those five days have since become somewhat legendary, having been reincarnated several times.
In 1996 VH1 re-aired the shows, and in 1998 Rhino Home Video released a full fledged boxed set containing the entire episodes, as well as an accompanying book.

excerpt from the Chicago Tribune, 29 June 1990

"The Mike Douglas Show," one of the `70s most popular talk shows, may not have always been "hip-TV," but for one week in 1972, John Lennon and Yoko Ono were co-hosts, bringing on guests such as Chuck Berry and Jerry Rubin to the otherwise straitlaced program. That unusual appearance is part of "Rock `N` Roll on Television," an exhibit that opens Thursday at the Museum of Broadcast Communications and runs through Sept. 15.

John and Yoko made Douglas a hippie hero

Fresh off a Palm Springs, Fla., golf course, Mike Douglas is asked to rewind his mind 24 years to the magical, mystical week when John Lennon and Yoko Ono co-hosted his daytime talk show.
For one, it briefly made him a pretty cool guy in "the very strange Philadelphia neighborhood where I used to get my hair cut. A lot of hippies lived there, and my show wasn't something they'd watch. But they were all watching that week. That's what knocked me cold. Suddenly, I became a hero."
John and Yoko did five shows with Mr. Douglas, taping one per week in his Philadelphia studios. They all aired during the week of Feb. 14-18, 1972, transforming the usually straitlaced Mike Douglas Show into a genuine "happening" back when that word had cachet. The VH1 cable network is replaying them this week on its Archives series. Imagine that.
"I don't have to tell you what magic it was with this man," Mr. Douglas says in a telephone interview. "A little far out at the time, for those days, but he was really a great talent. Those songs that he and Paul [McCartney] wrote will go on forever. And who would ever think that Michael Jackson would end up owning all of them? It's a shame that Paul wasn't smarter and didn't jump on that opportunity. Because you know he's got that loose change."
Mr. Douglas, 71, seemed to be on the verge of hyperventilating when he first brought John and Yoko onstage. He admits it.
"I had interviewed people of greater importance than that," he says. "I mean, I talked to seven presidents in my time, and a lot of big movie stars. But the fact that John and Yoko had turned down all the other shows, well, it was flattering. It probably got to me a little bit. I'm in awe of a lot of people like that. Always was."
Mr. Douglas has "oodles of snapshots" of their week together, some of which he'll include in a planned coffeetable book. But he has nary an autographed memento or other keepsake. And he has no idea who owns a large white canvas that was signed and drawn on by all of the show's participants during that storied week. Besides John, Yoko and Mike, guests included Chuck Berry, Ralph Nader, Jerry Rubin, George Carlin and former Black Panther Bobby Seale. The canvas supposedly was put
up for auction, with the proceeds going to charity.
"Oh God, what a bargain," Mr. Douglas says. "I have no idea what that went for, or where it ultimately went."
He greeted his co-hosts each day by performing a Lennon-written song. Which ones? He doesn't remember exactly, but "when I played Vegas, I used to do a medley of Beatles tunes. It was one of the biggest hits of my show."
Mr. Douglas is reluctant to discuss Yoko Ono's contributions to his TV show.
"I would rather have had him there without her," he says. "But I hate to express my opinion any further, because sure as God made green apples, she'll probably read about it."
Mr. Lennon had agreed to do his show again during a week of broadcasts in Hawaii, Mr. Douglas says. "But he called and said he was finishing up an album in New York and couldn't come. And that was the week he was assassinated" in 1980.
The Archives presentations of the Lennon-Ono Douglas shows include some cheeky comments from host John Fugelsang, who tells viewers Monday night, "Mike Douglas was to the counterculture movement what Spiro Agnew was to the Black Panther movement."
Mr. Douglas briefly laughs before firing back.
"So the host says that on the show, huh? I knew I couldn't escape that on VH1. Well, I don't know. It kept me on for 23 years.
"A lot of these youngsters, they'll be lucky to be on for 13 weeks."

The Mike Douglas Show With John Lennon And Yoko Ono, by Catherine Applefeld Olson

From Feb. 14-18,1972, John and Yoko cohosted "The Mike Douglas Show," and daytime television has probably never seen a more eclectic group of guests. On day three, the couple booked a macrobiotic cook, a biofeedback expert, the director of the Peace Corps, and Chuck Berry. Beatle fans expecting an all-out jam session will be disappointed, but Berry and Lennon performing "Johnny B. Goode" and "Memphis" are great. The only sour note is Yoko singing "Sisters 0 Sisters," and there is a laughable spoken-word performance by Douglas. There's also a music video of "Crippled Inside" from the "Imagine" album, featuring a cameo by the late Andy Warhol. The music portions are entertaining, but the talking-head guests are pretty dull. Still, the interaction between John and Yoko offers a lot of insight into why their marriage worked so well.

Great Musical Television: John & Yoko on Dick Cavett 1972

John Lennon and Yoko Ono made a guest appearance on ABC-TV’s Dick Cavett Show on May 11, 1972. During the show, John casually told Cavett that he believed that the FBI was wiretapping his phone in order to gather evidence for his deportment.
At the time, many people thought Lennon was just making it up. As it turned out, he was right.
Any of you remember watching this when it originally aired 49 years ago today?
Here is the whole show with Dick Cavett talking about what went on first.

00:00 Cavett added this introduction later to talk about the use of the first song that Lennon and Ono performed.

back cover:
John and I were having a conversation about astral identity. John was in a mood to start it off with a "No" and I with a "Yes." It's a seesaw game we play--though we prefer to think of it as a dialectic thinking process we developed between us, and that the seesaw will grow a propeller and start to float in the air, if we seesawed enough. So! We were ruminating on astral identity.
J: It's a bit uhh, you know.
Y: Right. But you know how an arbitarary number-series starts to make a pattern and repeats itself in the end. Say if the universe is infinite sometime or other it may start to repeat itself. Still, the idea of John from Liverpool and Yoko from Tokyo existing in another planet as well, having tea when we were having tea, that sort of thing, was a bit too much, John said, and his beautiful toes started to move up and down in bed.
Y: Maybe there's a timewarp and they'd be doing something we did last year, John. You're just offended. Men feel threatened when their uniqueness is questioned.
J: Not that. It just means that you believe in fatalism.
Y: Not necessarily. It only means that there are many, many universes. Infinite numbers of.
J: Infinity is just a man-made concept, it doesn't exist.
Y: Look, take numbers. Numbers are a concept, too. There's no such thing as number one, say. It's actually a numr that is an infinite approximation to number one, that we call number one. Like 0.999999...to infinity but we build bridges and buildings on those infinitely approximate numbers not on definite ones. That means that we are always just at the verge of things, verge of being. That goes for buildings and ships and everything.John turned into an English teapot before my eyes, and I found myself drifting off to a cosmic nowhere by myself.
Y: If it works on a microcosmic world like numbers below one, why not out there in the universe? Universe is infinitely approximate. But that means that it's at least approximately infinite, right? So the concept of infinity is not just a romanticism, John. It is an approximately infinite universe. I heard a tiny grunt and John saying he liked the sound of the words. Then suddenly we realized that this time we were both drifting out in cosmos somewhere together, like God's two little dandruffs floating in the universe. "Astral identity! Wow!" "Something else, right?" "Right!" Later, we came down to Earth and went back to our weekly ceremony of washing our hair and helping each other dry it. (December '72 New York)

On August 6th 1995, NHK(public TV/radio station in Japan) on-aired Yoko Ono's new song called "Hiroshima Sky is Always Blue". It was 50 years ago this day, dropping atomic bomb on Hiroshima, so the song on-aired as part of a 50-year commemoration of the first atomic bomb being dropped on Hiroshima.

This song recorded with Paul McCartney and his family on March this year at Paul's private studio.

Yoko send recorded DAT(Digital Audio Tape) to NHK for broadcasting this tribute song on august 6th.
NHK decided on-air, and interviewed Yoko about this song, her experiments of the World-War II, and so on.
On the on-air day, NHK's morning news programme, Ohayou Nippon (it means Good Morning Japan) from 7:00(JST=+0900). Yoko's corner took just 10 minutes (from 7:08 to 7:18), included Yoko's interview and new song, "Hiroshima Sky is Always Blue"

-History of Recording...
Taken mainly from Monthly "Beatles BOOK". (May 1995 & Aug. 1995 issues)

On March 11th (some other news source said on January), Yoko Ono and her son (of course between John Lennon) Sean Ono Lennon visited Paul McCartney's private studio called the Mill in East Sussex, to record a Yoko Ono composition called "Hiroshima Sky is Always Blue", which commemorating the 50th anniversary of the dropping of atomic bomb on Hiroshima.

Yoko and Sean teamed up for recording with Paul and his family, his wife Linda and their children Mary, Heather, Stella and James. Yoko takes lead vocal, and Paul providing backing vocal and upright bass (this upright bass played by Bill Black on Elvis Presley's "Heartbreak Hotel").
Also Linda plays celeste, Sean and Paul's son James both on guitar, and Mary, Heather, Stella join in on percussion and backing vocals.

This song is jamming-styled and type of free-form experimentation typical of Yoko's early music style for example on album Two Virgins, Life With Lions, and Yoko's part of Live Peace in Toronto.

Before Yoko and Sean returned to New York City, Paul handed mixed down tape over to Yoko, Yoko over-dubbed chimes of peace which played by Sean on intro and complete this song.

In rumor, Yoko is planning to issue this song on a future solo album, which recorded with Sean's band, but there's no plan.
Yoko said, "In a way, it's wrong to put that track on my album. I feel that because the children are involved, that track can't be put on a commercial album. That's how I feel, and it will be put in a different way, not on a commercial base. But it's hard to do it, it's very difficult, just one track."

-Yoko's Message on interview...
"Hiroshima's sky is blue" is pray, and I want that human society will be beautiful like blue blue sky in the future."

MIT List Visual Arts Center to present Y E S YOKO ONO

FIRST AMERICAN RETROSPECTIVE OF PIONEERING AVANT-GARDE ARTIST

OCTOBER 18, 2001 – JANUARY 6, 2002
Press conference Friday, October 19, 12:30 – 1:30pm

CAMBRIDGE, MA — YOKO ONO’s first American retrospective, Y E S YOKO ONO, comes to the MIT List Visual Arts Center on October 18, 2001.
The exhibition, organized by the Japan Society in New York City, has been remarkably popular, attracting over 150,000 visitors to its recent presentation in Minneapolis. It features approximately 150 works from the 1960s to the present, with a focus on ONO’s early period, and includes objects and installations; language works, such as instruction pieces and scores; film and video; music; and performance art.
It is divided into five chronological and thematic sections: GRAPEFRUIT: The Early Instructions; HALF-A-WIND: Early Objects; FLY: Events, Performances & Films; WAR IS OVER!: The Peace Movement & Other Collaborations with John Lennon; and PLAY IT BY TRUST: Recent Work. The exhibition title, Y E S YOKO ONO, refers to the interactive installation known as Ceiling Painting, an important work shown at ONO's historic 1966 Indica Gallery show in London. Descriptions for each section and a biography of the artist are attached.
The exhibition offers the first comprehensive reevaluation of ONO’s prolific 40-year career, exploring her position within the postwar international avant-garde, and her critical and influential role in originating forms of avant-garde art, music, film, and performance. It examines her early and central role in the Fluxus movement; her important contributions to Conceptual Art in New York, London and Tokyo; her concerts; experimental films; vocal recordings;
public art, including works made with John Lennon; and recent works, including interactive installations and site-specific art. ONO collaborated with such avant-garde figures as John Cage, George Maciunas, Nam June Paik, Charlotte Moorman, Andy Warhol, and Ornette Coleman, and works from these collaborations are also represented.
The exhibition is organized by modern Japanese art historian Alexandra Munroe in consultation with Fluxus scholar Jon Hendricks. Munroe, Director of Japan Society Gallery, is recognized internationally for her publications and landmark exhibitions in the field of modern Asian art, notably, Japanese Art After 1945: Scream Against the Sky seen at the Solomon R. Guggenheim Museum in 1994. Jon Hendricks, curator of The Gilbert and Lila Silverman Fluxus Collection, Detroit, is renowned for his catalogue raisonne Fluxus Codex (Abrams, 1988). He has worked as YOKO ONO’s curator and archivist since 1989 and has contributed to several important exhibitions of ONO’s work

Haruomi Hosono is famous for his activity as a member of Yellow Magic Orchestra and several other popular bands.

There was a girl right behind me, yelling nothing but "Yoko!" all the time. She can even be heard in a recording from this January. That was really distracting as I wanted to focus on Yoko's screamings.

Concept Art On Show In London (1966)
British Pathé

The film shows a presentation of Yoko Ono entitled "DIAS presents Two Evenings with Yoko Ono" which was part of the "Destruction in Art Symposium" (DIAS). It took place at the Africa Center in 38 King Street, London on September 28th and 29th, 1966. Mrs. Ono with Anthony Cox (American filmmaker and her partner at that time) performs her famous "Cut Piece" and "Bag Piece".

Notes from Pathe canisters: London
VS Concept artist Yoko Ono seated on rostrum and fellow artist slowly cuts her clothing away while she sits motionless. He cuts down to her underclothes.
VS of Yoko and her colleague climbing into a large black sack on their stage. They move around inside the sack. (Apparently this is called Bag-ism).
(Orig. Neg.) Old record suggests material dates from around 29/09/1966.
